» 45 Failures in Communication

  1. Bro says:

    Isn’t that from Azumanga Daioh?

  2. Ed says:

And why are you ending your question with three periods added to the question mark?

    • ralk says:

To indicate that it’s a drawn-out, hesitant question rather than a punctual, confident one?

    • Nicolas says:

      *ellipsis
Because it’s Japanese. In a normal conversation, loads of sentences are left unfinished, with the ending simply implied. For example if you want to say “I must do something”, you’ll actually say “I don’t do something and…” (implying “and it’s no good”). Here the original was probably something like “I would like to apply to college but…” (implying “I would like your opinion on this matter). Or maybe: “I wonder what sort of college I should apply to…” (implying “could you please give me the favour of an advice”).

      • a@b.de says:

lololol its obviously english, if it would be japanese it would be written with chinese symbols u noob

      • R3 says:

It’s in English, not Japanese. It isn’t possible to translate, verbatim, from a language like Japanese to English without losing meaning or implications.

English translations use original writing to give off and convey the same ideas and feelings of the Japanese text.

Meaning, writing mechanics used in the Japanese version would not be carried over into the English version if it doesn’t make sense in English.

TL;DR: Just because they used an ellipsis in the English version doesn’t mean squat about the Japanese text. It was used to convey the scene, that’s all.

    • marxzed says:

elipses in japanese text (particularly manga) represent speechlessness over the uncertainty or embarrassment of the question just asked. It doesn’t even have to be the original speaker that has the ellipses, just the character (or even inanimate object) that is rendered speechless by the question.

think of it as like the formulaic comedy sketch sound effect of crickets chirping after an character says something gob smackingly dumb.

  3. IronyMan says:

None at all. Now, back to the kitchen, silly woman.

  4. Nicolas says:

    Not me!

  5. Gas Bandit says:

Sakaki somehow went up a cup size between the manga and anime, I guess.

  6. Jack F. says:

I tried it! I made $2 an hour and ended up losing my house. Would not recommend.

    • Le Toophle says:

I’d rather take the word of someone I don’t know’s friend’s step-aunt, thank you very much!

Besides, just put in some more hours to turn a profit.

    • Emetique Necrotica says:

      Hahaha.

    • william says:

how would you like it if i called you “American scum” because your American and you like YOUR culture.
don’t hate on people who like Japanese (popular) culture just because your so close minded you cant see out your arse.

PS i actually like Japanese culture.

  7. skyhack says:

That is not a cat! That is Chiyo’s father!

  8. chompers says:

I don’t get it. Isn’t it supposed to be funny… or something? Is there some sort of double entendre I don’t see?

    • Emetique Necrotica says:

Even if it is, a bunch of weeaboos will force themselves to laugh if they have to.

    • marxzed says:

well the original Azumanga Daioh strips are all 4 frames long and follow a standard formula so with just two frames it’s out of context with itself.
Are these two frames the development frame and the punch line frame or the setup and the unforeseen development frame.

Also if you don’t know the over all characters development arcs then its even more out of context.

  9. Emetique Necrotica says:

    HA HA! HAHAHAHAHA! HA…wait, no.

  10. Zackkcaz says:

    i wish i were a bird

  11. Mr. Lollerface says:

Why is that thing called a cat?..
    God I hate anime…

  12. Liberty Prime says:

WHAT THE HELL IS THAT THING?

  13. Chaonic says:

    Cause it’s Chio-chan’s dad! :D

  14. Trollman says:

Best anime ever . . . among others

  15. lolwat says:

I honestly hate manga and anime, but for Azumanga Daioh, you shouldn’t diss it until you read it.
