The joke is that an “oreo” is a black person who acts white, and “cracker” should be obvious. Personally I think it’s funny; unintentional humor is best humor.
Lots of racism is unintentional, btw.
So, to point out the obvious to suprisebuttknifed, pairing a product to that has nothing to do with skin tone, based on skin tone, is in fact an act of racism. Now, to quote Avenue Q, “It doesn’t mean we go around committing hate crimes.” is also fair to say. It doesn’t appear to be hateful in any way. But it does have to do with race.
Which is your favorite, Oreo’s or Ritz? Which is your favorite, Black or White?
Of course you can see it that way. But you can’t say that black people ain’t black, and white ain’t white. And sure, you could view it as an act of racism, and I understand why. But I don’t get why people choose to do that.
It’s just like sexism. If you treat them equally this is bound to happen from time to time too, even if unintentional. No need to get all worked up about it.
Actually, racist isn’t noting differences between races, but rather belief that one race is superior to another. It isn’t racist to color match black cookies to black people, and white cookies to white people. Similarly, it isn’t racist for a kid to refer to the dark skinned gentleman down the street as “that black man”.
Now, if ritz barbie was a McDonald’s teller. And oreo barbie was a Dr. THAT would be racist.
Well, it WOULDN’T be racist if not for previous social connotations- the fact that ‘oreo’ and ‘cracker’ can both be racist slurs. Outside of context, the dolls are fine, but you can’t really take them outside of the context. And the context for a doll made by an American company is a long history of racism, of whites being raised above blacks, etc etc- the main reason to note the difference between racism was to point out the (of course untrue) inferiority of the black race.
So, technically, you are right, but in real life, it’s still racist
Except almost no white people actually consider cracker a slur, nor care if it is said. I got called a jew cracker by a van speeding down the street by some hispanic gentlemen. I immediately whipped around and said “Yeah, I’m a cracker jew!” and laughed wondering how they knew. I then continued about my day. I think there are racist people stretching things to make them sound racist to call them out and hide their own racism. Just shut up and live life.
Stereotyping and prejudice can be unintentional, but racism is the explicit belief that one race is better than the other. For example, I’m not racist but there are tests of implicit associates that show me that I am biased to unconsciously associate bad things with black people. https://implicit.harvard.edu/
A good amount of food marketing is set up this way. It’s odd. Chocolate flavored things have black people on them, original flavors typically white. It’s funny cause if you first notice it once, you’ll notice it everytime. Thanks a lot Pop tarts adds and Life ceral…
No, they don’t. The frosting in the middle of an Oreo is ok, but the cookie part around it is disgusting. Only way to eat an Oreo is to lick the frosting and throw the rest of the cookie in the garbage.
But I’d rather just eat pretty much any other cookie.
i only like oreo cream, its the only part thats worth eating… and i love ritz’s buttery goodness… that doesn’t make me less black… just means i have personal taste preference… i would eat a chips ahoy though… original or chewy
One on the right is not real. Photoshopped to pay hommage to the original Nabisco-Barbie cross branding Oreo campaign. http://godheval.net/nabisco-barbies/
I’d just like to point out, that if either of these are real, Matell would have made a oreo barbie in both black and white, and the ritz barbie would also be available in either black or white. They would also be available with Midge, Ken, Stacy, Theresa, and all the other characters. So if the Oreo one is real, look for the white version, and don’t worry. These photos are obviously photo shopped anyways. But thanks for the laugh!
If you search on google, you will find the white version of “oreo barbie,” if you look for “Ritz barbie” it doesn’t exist. There are two different versions of the oreo one, “oreo” and “Oreo Fun.” Both made in both characters.
When I was at school (about 8th or 9th grade, dunno) we used to make jokes about what we called bread racism: If someone chose to eat white bread only and no black bread, he was a bread racist (and vice versa).
ROFLMFAO SRSLY
There is a difference between Racism, and Marketing.
and ROFLMFAO, YES SRSLY.
Well, NO NT SRSLY. The Oreo one is real. We have one. The Ritz one is not. http://godheval.net/nabisco-barbies/
Man I love Ritz.
And I guess you could say….
*pulls down sunglasses*
I’m a cracker.
How is that racist? Dark person, dark cookie and vice versa. It’s the color, it matches, what is the problem?

So, what’s feminism?
Are you saying that Dr’s are “better” than people who work in McDonalds?

A public service announcement.
wow. relax. and racism isn’t unintentional.

“Not all white people like Ritz”?
Yes. Yes they do.
Incidentally, they also all love Oreos.
Ritz are good but Oreos own the living hell out of them, in my opinion.

^^^ OH THIS SOUNDS NAUGHTY! >.<

I like both, a lot.

i like how it’s photoshopped to make black barbie look darker skinned too… thats hilarious
It’s okay, she’s still white on the inside!
