This is Angela Zhang, a Californian student who just won $100,000 in the Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology. Her contribution to the competition? Nothing big, just discovering a cell that can fight cancer. Oh sorry, I meant developed that cell. Her work, titled “Design of Image-guided, Photo-thermal Controlled Drug Releasing Multifunctional Nanosystem for the Treatment of Cancer Stem Cells,” is a total mouthful, but some are saying it’s a real “Swiss army-knife” in the fight against cancer – helping both the treatment of cancer cells and their detection.
Did I mention that she’s seventeen years old?
And with that, I’m going to go pretend like I’ve accomplished something with my life.

Copy & paste this:

Why is this even on here..?
It’s not a “win” (as opposed to a “fail”), it’s just “news”.
“And you, sir, are worse than Hitler!” SLAP.
Hitler made it in here fast I see.
It actually is just one type of cancer, and it is not that effective, or she will win Nobel’s price.
Well, she COULD have failed. I mean, she could have made cancer patients turn into vampire zombies. Like that guy from I Am Legend. THAT would be a fail.
Actually, if this is news, that could still happen…
This is exactly what I started thinking, lol. Except cells do not act like bacteria or viruses.
but they could. zombies man. zombies….
Scarier than sparkly vampires, sure.
I believe the same rule would apply in both scenarios. kill the brain.
Sparkly vampires have brains?
idk, its hard to tell when sorting through a pile of ashes.
Ah, fire, the answer to killing whatever ails you!
yup shoot em and burn the bodies. vampires conveniently light themselves on fire when you kill them.
I’ve found the fail in all this. Hint: It’s the guy that believes “I am Legend” was a documentary.
Don’t really want to sound mean, but if yo momma was dying of cancer… you’d be probably saying “OMG TOTAL WIN”. Sad but tue.
And yet that still wouldn’t satisfy the definition of “win” on this site.
A “win” on Failblog is a fat kid beating up his bully. A “win” is trolling a troll. A “win” is avoiding a “fail” by some miraculous feat.
An internet “win” is therefore not doing something newsworthy or scientifically important.
Killing cancer and getting $100,000 when you’re 17 sounds like beating up the bully and trolling the troll at the same time.
This girl did a spectacularly good thing, Usually good things get sidelined to science sites and news articles for people who want to know about Kim Kardashan to call boring. I’m glad that FB is making a point of this. We should celebrate people who do things that matter.
Angela Zhang, you rule.
I’m surprised only $100,000 was awarded, unless the news is misreporting exactly what she contributed to science. I would have thought you’d get more for creating a stepping stone towards beating the incurable.
And yet Failblog isn’t a news site, it’s not dedicated to science, it’s dedicated to people doing decidedly stupid things, or, in some cases, performing “wins” that are not significant in real life at all.
YOU ARE MY FREAKING HERO
I agree, I don’t care that I don’t find her that attractive. I would bang her 24/7 as a reward for her amazing work. I’m not sure if banging me would be a reward for her but if it was, I would want to help her all i could. It’s the least i could do. Anyone else wanna offer their bodies to this woman?
You don’t get it do you?
If this was discovered/invented by 40yo scientists who’d spent their last 20 years dedicated to cancer research it would be merely “good news”.
It’s a WIN because she’s 17!! Holy freaking wow, Batman. If that doesn’t impress you, nothing will.
Cold much? This is a huge win in the world of medicine.
Alas, it is still not an internet “win”.
I know the concept is difficult to understand.
It’s easy to understand if the internet is your world. In the REAL world, this is a total win.
And this site isn’t dedicated to worldly “wins”, is it?
yes, as a matter a fact it often is. I guess they could have made it easier for you if they also tagged it IRL.
then there should be a separate site like:
realworldwin.failblog.org
anyway i know the difference between those 2 so this win should not be here in failblog. it should be in yahoo, msn or other news site that has newsworthy win or fail
That, sir, is the definition of Win. *ahem*
“The action or reaction to the direct opposite of a fail. A win is a moment of such epic sucess that it needs not be acknowledged with more than an understated “Win” which signifies the moments’ need to be granted the tag of a “Win” due to its importance in the History of Human existence.”
Not really.
Yeah really.
Nah.
Unless it makes you laugh, involves people doing stupid things, etc. it’s not a “fail” or a “win”, and so has no place on a site dedicated to “fails”.
There was nothing in the article that was humorous, clever, startling, etc.
I know that’s a difficult concept for most people on the internet.
I’m sorry, I didn’t realize you were the one who established failblog mated with the entire community which sustains it.
Sorry champ, but failblog and wins.failblog are whatever the community makes of them.
If the community claims something to be a win, it is a win.
If the community claims something to be a fail, it is a fail.
I know that’s a difficult concept for most self righteous people on the internet.
Ah, so failblog then has become a news site devoted to anything of interest.
Good to know.
Anytime.
Screw you., you disgusting creep.
Oh noes, it’s cuddles second account trying to get in the last word!
You think this website is about humour? How long have you been here?
What it is in theory and what it is in practice are two different things
Die in a fire.
Ignore the troll.
Because it’s a mega win for humanity, and… She is 17, so way to go! Think about it: she does that at 17, life expectancy is 85.
Life expectancy just jumped with her win.
Yeah because what we need is to keep more people alive. I mean its not like we’re not overpopulated already
The overpopulation hysteria is just another leftist dream. It’s all about power with the Left, or capitalizing on compassion (and resulting in death and misery)
The evil in the world (including starvation, etc.) is from human corruption, not a lack of creative use of prosperity and existing and expanded resources.
CANCER RESEARCH WIN…. DER….
with this, ‘WIN’ does not even begin to describe it really, this is something on the way to stopping the big ‘C’ for good!
It’s just so bizarre and surreal to watch what’s happening to failblog. It reminds me a little bit of those Tina Chen “music videos” on youtube.
Total WIN. If this is what she is doing at 17 then imagine what she may come up / discover within the next 50 years!
Black guys.
Wrong! I read in the news that Zhang has also developed a nanocell that finally allows people, after going black, to go back!
^WIN
Dang! And she’s 17?! It makes me feel like a “fail”!
You want to know where the Fail is in this news? Look into the mirror, is the answer.
Let me go hang myself now.
Congratulations to Zhang for developing the ITPGCDRMNTC or “Suck My Balls, Cancer” for short.
This commentid a win.
Gerard approves.
she has big brass balls.
If there is a fail in there, it must be on the poster’s part. I guess he doesn’t see the relevance of a new tool against cancer…
You fail, dude. you fail hard !
wait… only $100.000 for the discovery of a cure for cancer???? and a f*cking scholarship????? I don’t want to live in this planet anymore
It’s not a cure per se. It’s another mean for fighting cancer. Also I do belive that these money are a schoolarship for further education, giving this young lady a Ph.D in medicine (or whatever is equal to that, where ever she may be studying).
Thumbs up on this relevant WIN
100,000 isn’t enough for a Ph.D if she were to study among any of the top universities in the world…
If indeed her findings do cure cancer, what school wouldn’t offer her a free ENTIRE scholarship? To have the name of the one who cured cancer associated with the school would be a HUGE coup.
^ ditto.
Most people in science PhD programs don’t pay tuition; they work as teaching or research assistants and make around 20-30k/year.
No, but after her incredible accomplishment any university denying her would surprise the crap out of me.
But it is surprising, if her research proves to be the key in ending cancer, she deserves more than a token cash prize.
Also guys, I get the win/doesn’t count as a win arguement, but let it go. It’s still cool news, don’t get your panties in a bunch over one post.
Agreed… I watched a college football game last weekend where two girls were throwing footballs through a large hole 10 yards away from them. The girl that threw the most was awarded with $100,000 toward education tuition.
One girl throws footballs through a space my grandmother could make while another develops a cell that could combat cancer…

Humanity values things in all the wrong ways. If success is measured by money, exploitation is the best thing a human can do.
I don’t care what website this is, this girl needs to be praised, idolized, glamorized and publicized, on every media outlet in the world. Kim Kardashian took over the media with her wedding and subsequent divorce; Angela Zhang deserves as much attention, and more. She should at least be awarded enough money to compete with the Kardashian wedding (and yes, Siemens has it to give). The most depressing thing about this is seeing the news posted on Failblog before CNN or BBC.
ditto.
Suddenly I don’t feel so bad about getting most of my news from either here or the random other blogs I read.
I tip my hat to you good sir. Couldn’t have said it better myself.
Wow! Epic Win!
Good on the win.
Did anyone else note the spelling on the cheque?
i didnt. because it spelled correctly here.
they just chose a wrong font for that that make the S looked T
Look at the second letter of the first name on the cheque. Not an N.
High Expectations Asian Dad approves!
Wasn’t the cure for cancer discovered years ago?
No, and thats not funny. If there was a cure my wife would not be dead.
http://technorati.com/lifestyle/article/the-cure-for-cancer-has-been/
What a s**t world we live in.
Shady article is shady.
This chick goes to my high school holy s**t…
Heh…Siemens…
Damn it You beat me to it, no Inb4 for me.
She developed the concept of a molecule that might be used to deliver among other things cancer fighting drugs.
A bit less sensationalistic than the media’s “OMG, teen kills all world’s cancer!”
Still amazing, but would it kill journalists to state scientific breakthroughs accurately?
No! She killed all cancer! Read the comments above; everyone is convinced that she has, in effect, cured cancer.
No they aren’t. Most of the comments are impressed by what she has done, nobody is saying that she’s cured cancer. Do not assume that everybody else is stupid, it will only make you look stupid.
Kill ALL THE CANCER!
Since the world is overpopulated with humans this is a fail.
When we are at a stable world population of 1 billion, and the US has a stable population of 100 million (or less) we should try and beat cancer.
Asians…
It’s hard to believe why news these days is so sensationalized — oh wait, it’s because of things like this. This girl has probably invented something that may be very useful for cancer researchers (but obviously more testing and research is needed) and almost everyone commenting here now believes that cancer is cured.
For some reason I thought of I am Legend, when they had the cure for cancer and it turned everyone into flesh eating zombies….
Lmao…….
So she wins $100,000 for discovering a possible cure for cancer.
Meanwhile, Susan G Komen for the Cure has made billions off donations.
And if this discovered cure does happen to make it to market and is widely successful, the medical company that produces/sells it is going to make trillions.
So in the grand scheme of things, $100,000 seems like a runner-up prize.
It’s the equivalent of printing out a “Congratulations, you cured Cancer” award on your home printer.
Its a lie.
Stuff like this makes me so love people or just stop being so down on myself, as much. I don’t know her, but I am proud of her! Thanks! WIN!!
Asian. 17. Genius, Gonna be rich.
IS SHE SINGLE???
And here I am, still improving the microwave chocolate cake day after day.
But hey, that’s kind of important research too.
She goes to my high school
Can I have her phone number?
And, to think, I was proud to get a “B” in high school biology class…
my life sucks.
Bring it trolls with your sandwich jokes!
This is not a win.
Your saying it’s not a win is no win, either. loser.
She’s a frackin hero! WIN!!
What a loser… when I was 17 I was getting effed up and banging hoes.
The fail here is that people think she still needs to go to college.
Heh heh heh. Siemens.
I’m pretty sure pharmaceutical companies will try to hide this info as fast as they or try to get an advantage out of this so their business don’t die. Just like they have done with the other dozens of cures for cancer.
Yes, that’s right. Not a single big pharma has decided to cash in on and own the ONLY ( or even just first ) cure for cancer …
What a display of deeply nonsensical thinking this was.
cuddles the Safety Clown
STFU
Even Asian dad has to be proud of this.
