Same reason you buy a Porche instead of a Volvo – they may be functionally identical for the average user, but people with too much money and too little brains will always shell out the extra cash to buy the one that’s “cool”.
No.. it’s like having two cars that are identical, only one is white and the other is whatever the hell colour you want, yet the white one is twice the price.
A guy from my class recently dished out $4.200 for a macbook pro 17″. I still cannot understand why… I mean, yes he likes the multitouch gestures, he likes the OS, he likes the finish, he likes the power, he likes the logo, he likes the size, and he likes the battery time, but I still cannot imagine why even that many likes would justify paying $4.200 for a laptop…
Not true, Apple used the Next platform which Jobs created as the base of the new system. Next was built on Linux to harness the power of open source. Mac OS while Linux based is definitely not Linux.
mac is the definition of closed source… and they are using a system based on an opensource o/s… so its basically taking something free, tweaking it and then charging for it… lazy and bulls**t.
No, it isn’t.
My desktop cost less than 500 dollars to build from the ground up.
It can run windows no problem. A little hack later and it can run OS X better than anything Apple will sell you.
i got one thing that i hate for macs, they try to get as much money as they can. you know the plug to put a projector to your computer, Mac changes them often and they do not match the cables for projectors, so you always need to buy an adaptor. and there are bunch of other stuff too. most of the other computers have SVGA cables but they felt the need to make you pay for something useful for one thing instead of many.
I use both, and am a fan of Mac design. I travel with a MacBook (and I bought it solely because I thought it was cool…I admit it), and it works great. However, to suggest that “the price argument” is incorrect is ridiculous. It is true that there are a couple of spots where Apple gets near-to competitive, like the MacBook Air (it’s still more $ than Wintel alternatives, but it’s closer), but mostly “the price argument” is reality. this is especially true if you factor in the fact that 90%+ of all user get 100% of their needed functionality out of an entry-level computer.
To wit: I bought my wife a new HP laptop a few weeks ago for $379 on sale from a regular price of $469. It has a dual core processor, 4GB of RAM, built-in mem-media reader, a DVD burner, and a 300GB HDD. Please feel free to go to your local Mac store, buy whatever brand new laptop you want as long as it’s less than $400, and we’ll do a performance comparison. The only rule is that the Mac you’re going to buy has to actually exist.
Because you can’t run OS X on a PC (legally or with any kind of support), and because cheaper means you get what you pay for, i.e. a s**itty PC?
A Mac Mini is $599, I would love to hear you explain how that’s expensive. A Macbook Air is $999, the closest PC that actually competes with it on the same level costs $1600. Maybe you should do some research before being stupid about it.
yes to the 50% of pc owners that dont get past the browser/word processing yes they are functionally the same… but at that point then a Chromebook is functionally superior to both.
I along with the pc gamers/programmers etc that use computers for more than the browsers enjoy the functionality and customization of windows over the rigid piece of sh*t that is Mac OS.
plus its easy and cheap to get a pc and windows 7 (for free) and any program i want also for free
Correct. And contrary to popular belief, fostered by smart marketing from Apple, PCs are much more powerful than Apple computers are…so they’re the only choice for gamers! (apart from compatibility issues…)
At least Windows *has* an inbuilt security system. Mac users are only just waking up to the fact that they’re not invulnerable just because Apple say so.
Lol wut? I think Jabz was talking about UAC, the Mac equivalent of which has been around way before Windows made a pathetic first stab at it (and the concept of sudo has existed in nix for 3 decades). The Windows 7 implementation is a significant improvement but is still far from perfect.
windows only fail people who dont know what they are doing and treat it like a machine that will never fail.
EVERY MACHINE BREAKS DOWN. But the only reason your computer OS breaks is cause you are too stupid and arrogant to think it will fix itself.
almost 2 years and no crashes or major viruses or slowed processing on my PC…
and never paid anything for any program other than games.
lol at your argument. I’m a programmer/ artist/ musician and web designer
and the stability/ performance of OSX on mac machines beats that of any windows machine I’ve ever used.
I used to be a hardcore gates fan boy, but not anymore. Why make things complicated when it can be simplified.
But hey, what do i know. And why did I even bother responding to this anyways?
If I had a nickle for every time I read an argument like this on the internet…
You would probabl have a few nickels by now. But what good would that do you? Searching the internet for comments of this type would sure take a lot of your time that could otherwise have been used earning money with a real job. And I also imagine the total sum of your collected nickels would only barely scratch the surface of your monthly payments, perhaps take care of the broadband, but forget about the rent and the phone bill. Why not instead get 10 dollars for every time you saw a commen like that. You might be able to profit a little. Think big is what I say.
A Programmer, artist, musician, and web designer?! That’s pretty impressive. Until you realize, all anyone has to do anymore is download an app for that and they can also take those meaningless titles. Thus, your beloved Apple has rendered you obsolete. Good day.
Yes it will, you just have to understand Ubuntu. Unlike Windows, the drivers for your hardware are included in the OS and downloaded upon bootup if Ubuntu doesn’t have them on file. You can also download the Linux drivers from nVidia and ATI websites.
Apple fanboys will certainly disagree. First of all: there is no apple on non-apple devices.. !
Windows fanboys, whut?? Oh yeah right, we don’t care about bulls**t, we use the thing instead of admiring and stroking it endlessly..
I’m using a PC right now and i haven’t lost “half an hour due to software updates and virus scans” they only time it wants to update is when i shut it off. I don’t know how virus scans work on a Mac, but on my PC they only happen when i decide to scan my PC.
Macs don’t have anti-virus or other security software, because they’re invulnerable to any security threat. It must be true – Steve said it!
Any anti-virus software for a Mac is obviously a scam, and all the Mac virus/trojan/malware news over the past year is obviously made up by the same companies to sell their (often free) software.
(And in case you can’ tell, I’m being sarcastic. Macs suck donkey-balls.)
Why are people fighting over some stupid s**t like this…
It’s all about what you NEED, not because its expensive or cheap or what ever.
I use Windows because it does what I need(Mainly programming).
So I don’t have a reason to get a Mac, and I’ve tried it, it’s not what I need.
I bought my Mac specifically for the Apple Prores codecs in Adobe After Effects. But I prefer my PCs for my Autodesk Maya renderfarm. It depends on what you’re using them for. They’re just tools.
All macs are now are a platform for Mac OSX. Hardware wise they are just Intel based PC’s with a special string of code in the bios that identifies it as a Mac so Mac OS will boot. Now that Apple has changed to intel there is nothing else unique about the hardware other than that and that they are white and shiny. If you’d like to pay twice as much for a shiny white PC so you can run Mac OS go ahead.
Actually Macs don’t even have a “BIOS”, they use EFI instead. So it’s the whole OS loader that’s different, not just a string in the BIOS. But you are correct that the only difference is that Apple selects your hardware and just gives you a special OS loader. Some people can claim that Macs have better hardware because of the backlit keyboard and the “fancy” trackpad, but if you look at expensive PCs you get those too or you can save your money and get a standard keyboard/trackpad.
It’s pretty funny the amount of PC fanboys commenting on this, none of you guys have a life, that’s why you use a PC and somehow find the s**tty hardware good
s**tty hardware? is that why my gfx card that i paid $70 for is $230 in a mac computer?
mac=overpriced
pc=vulnerable to more viruses
id like to also add… the only reason its so vulnerable to viruses is not because mac has a superior virus protection, its because there is alot more pc’s out there… why make viruses for a computer no one uses? only now in recent years have viruses started popping up for mac, because it is gaining popularity with these hipster idiots who cant identify they are paying 4x more for the same hardware.
the only mac computers that are “half” worth it is the laptops… and thats mainly due to the quality of the casing and cooling. otherwise its exactly the same as a normal pc laptop.
hahahah… i love seeing people waste their time justifying their preference.
It’s like “Dudes are way better than Girls, and they don’t take as many drinks to get all loosened up and come home with you” and the reply is “I really prefer Girls. They’re prettier, and I don’t mind buying more drinks to bring one home.”
If you like girls, don’t try to convince me they’re better than guys… If you prefer guys, don’t try and convince me they’re better than girls.
If I’m up for an experimental phase… I’ll go out and try it myself!
Thought the campaign was a bit odd in the first place. “Mac” is the kinda guy that already will buy a mac. “PC” dude is the market Apple doesn’t have. So then make fun of the ones you need to sell to to expand your share? e.g. Which one of the two dudes in the ad do you want….
–handling your financial planning..
–doing your taxes..
–storing your medical records..
–filling your prescriptions….(wait uh…not that one).
–not spilling nacho cheese on the keyboard.. (because he too stoned not to eat right now)
I find it amusing that so many opinionated jerk-offs flock to these sites (yes, I can clearly identify the irony) to tout their thoughts on a seamingly simple and harmless humor that is blatantly, not to mention pointedly, needling advertising’s pull on the average, uniformed sheep of a consumer.
But I digress – a better slogan would be this:
“Hi, I’m a Mac. And I’m a PC.
Choose whichever you want because at the end of the day it comes down to you either did your research and chose a product you thought was best suited for your needs…or you deserve what you got.”
I’ve been using an iMac for almost 6 years and just recently sold my MacBook (don’t need a laptop ATM and my future employment almost always includes one). The reason I choose Mac? My iMac was about $2500 new (though I got it for about $900 when I bought it off my mother), but in that time, I have had no viruses, no freezes, no “blue screen of death” or any other problem. Nor have I (until about 2 months ago, making the machine roughly 7 to 7.5 years old in total) had to do a lot of physical maintenance, just a new H/D and like a PC, I was able to do the work myself, so I figure even if I’d bought it brand new, that would mean 7 to 7.5 years for under $3000, rather than what I see friends and family doing (a new PC every 12 to 18 months). To me that’s a net win, as even at $500 to $750, I’d have gone over $3000 in less than 7 years, so I came out with a win in my book.
Well there’s different things you can do on a computer. You can do work, play games, browse social networks and the internet… But let’s not forget play games ;D. Honestly I never see anyone using Macs for anything but making spreadsheets and powerpoints, managing iTunes, and going on facebook. an $1100 computer just to do that? Go buy a dell and do the same thing for 800 bucks cheaper and put kispersky on it… I love computers and I aspire to be a programmer, and I am currently working on building my own computer. I can buy high quality parts, have an incredible machine that can run practically any game or movie in HD and I can still do it much less than what the cost of a Mac is. Maybe a mac is more simple, and maybe you should make things simple when you can. You should not, though, make a machine less capable of what it can do and raise the price for simplicity.
PPppppftt having a mac to be protected from viruses is like wearing a clown suit to prevent STDs sure it may work, but not for the right reason, I built a 200 dollar computer from the ground up with a windows and it will run anything better then apple. I’d like to see you run count this now.. eight world of warcraft windows known as double quad boxing while leveling characters, Check my facebook, look at lolcats and check my email, while running at a steady 60% CPU and World of warcraft runs at around 40 fps.
PC’s are not cheap computers, they are very expensive doorstops.
I’ve used both for years. For everything from Web Programming through, Film Production to Data Hungry Graphics applications.
PCs are fine for checking email. For just about anything else, might as well use them to set a Mac on. Issues from incompatible hardware to virus’s to just having windows crater an entire project.
Linux is a better solution but with it’s own issues and limitations (mostly software/support).
Apple products are curated technology. They are meticulously researched, designed and supported to make your experience productive and enjoyable. You can not put a price on that.
Are there applications for which they are overkill? Of course. I would still rather know that my computing experience will be a good one than hope it will.
At the end of the day, I can’t remember how many times we’ve migrated projects to the Macs so they would actually get done, right and on time.
I can’t think of one instance where we did the same with our PC’s.
PC guys are the equivalent of my VW friends. They love them because they can buy the parts cheap, fix it themselves and it gets them where they are going (except when they call me to pick them up cause the damn thing broke down). The reality is, they are always working (“improving”) them instead of driving. The constantly go without because this part is on backorder or that part was the wrong size (One friend had no heat for about a year. Others, yes plural, would need push-starts or park on a hill).
If my Mac sputters, breaks or doesn’t work. I cozy up to the Genius Bar and it is taken care of. The Genius is that the offer the bar to their customers.
Love your PC? Good for you. We have 6 IT people for PCs. 1 for Macs, Macs outnumber PCs at our Co. 3 to 1 (and growing). I’ll be busy making money using my Mac while you’re tinkering with your PC. Which is more expensive then?
A point I have been making for some years, now.
It’s a terrible argument, you should stop.
Au contraire, it’s an excellent argument.
Fan bois will extol the virtue of one system over another but most of the time you’re using a browser, email client, word processor or spreadsheet.
So the underlying system is irrelevant.
Fan bois cannot see the inherent logic in this argument.
Except for the price difference.
Why buy a Mac if I can get a wider, cheaper variety of computers using windows?
Also… no Skyrim on Mac without using bootcamp… pfff please.
Same reason you buy a Porche instead of a Volvo – they may be functionally identical for the average user, but people with too much money and too little brains will always shell out the extra cash to buy the one that’s “cool”.
you mean the Windows powered Porsche.
No.. it’s like having two cars that are identical, only one is white and the other is whatever the hell colour you want, yet the white one is twice the price.

I just built a new desktop that runs Windows 7 with a quad core duo 3Ghz Intel I7 for less than that box of junk.
Macbook’s aint boxes of junk, and i can get a computer thats prob 2-3 times as powerful as your thing for about half the price
Macbooks are, heck for $400 I have 500gbs, CD/DVD player-recorder, 17″ screen and wi-fi. Plus it’s still going strong after three years of daily use.
Tell that to Lenovo, even without a sale price.
Both made in China, ‘cept one is ‘special edition white, designed in california’.
Just goes to show the only thing they care about in California is being white.
Except the price argument is incorrect and overused.
With Bootcamp I can run mac or windows programs on the same machine.
And Windows costs significantly more that OS X.
and what? Windos is not PC. iMacs are all very overpriced. You can buy much better PC for this price AND install mac on it if you really want it.
*Compulsory plug for Linux*
Spits in the face of Linux and goes out partying in a tuxeda made from skinned baby penguins, for no other reason than to be mean.
Remember this: when Apple almost died, Linux took over. Apple doesn’t produce anything for themselves any more.

That which can be asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence
Macs used to run games then they took an arrow to the knee.

More customizable? Riiiight.
Besides, one can easily get Mac OSX and any program they want for free.
Personally, the thing that I love most about Windows is the inherent failings of it’s inbuilt security system…
At least Windows *has* an inbuilt security system. Mac users are only just waking up to the fact that they’re not invulnerable just because Apple say so.

Why not instead get 10 dollars for every time you saw a commen like that. You might be able to profit a little. Think big is what I say.
I love you.
You must be a very bad programmer. Macs may be good for media (music/blah-blah-blah) but not the most practical OS for programming.
if you had a nickel for every time you read you still wouldn’t have enough to purchase the apple
A Programmer, artist, musician, and web designer?! That’s pretty impressive. Until you realize, all anyone has to do anymore is download an app for that and they can also take those meaningless titles. Thus, your beloved Apple has rendered you obsolete. Good day.
Looks like we have a badass over here
I agree, plus PC’s cost less.
My wallet would have something to say about that.
And since you are functionally identical, people will buy the cheaper one.
True for intelligent people.
For fanbois, less so.
Or you can build a PC and install Ubuntu.
Cheaper an functionally identical.
Except for the fact that Ubuntu can’t do anything I want it to. It won’t even install my ATI or Nvidia accelerated graphics drivers.
@Mercury
Yes it will, you just have to understand Ubuntu. Unlike Windows, the drivers for your hardware are included in the OS and downloaded upon bootup if Ubuntu doesn’t have them on file. You can also download the Linux drivers from nVidia and ATI websites.

Welcome to the internet.
Now RUN!!!
No they are not!
If you are looking at this site from a pc you would have lost half an hour due to software updates and virus scans.

It’s not that simple. They both fill specific roles and so they aren’t identical at all, that’s wayyyyy too broad of a statement.
Windows has much more gaming support.
Mac is the unparalleled industry standard for pro audio & pro video.
Web development is pretty good across both, but Windows is used much more for software programming. Mac is used more for App/iOS programming.
I bought my Mac specifically for the Apple Prores codecs in Adobe After Effects. But I prefer my PCs for my Autodesk Maya renderfarm. It depends on what you’re using them for. They’re just tools.

Full of freaking win
yeah functionally identical until windows gets a virus, gets hacked, or gets booted offline mysteriously.

Sounds like you don’t have a clue how to use a PC…
