better a log on the head than… wait… i lost my point
It looks like the people were unevenly spaced from the tree at impact. This probably created a lever action that transferred more backwards force to the kid that hit closer to the tree, knocking him over.
That and look how he/she is holding it. Thumbs up. The thumb is the weakest point in a grip, when they hit the log pushed against the thumb and the into the face.
