Non-potable means they havn’t had the water checked to see if it’s suitable for drinking (or they have and it didn’t pass). The sign is most likely there to cover themselves legally if someone drinks it and gets sick.
Almost funny enough for an imperceptible smirk…but not quite.
The water may be safe but they aren’t certain and probably will have it checked soon… There is no point to remove it… I’m sorry if that is too hard to get around your head
Ha! That’s my old school — I recognize this whole scene. It’s from about two years ago… they had to replace some old plumbing in an old building. It’s a university, so, yes, they did understand the word “non-potable.” lol
The University of Washington had these signs up for ages on a bunch of water fountains. The story goes that, during remodeling, lazy contractors hooked the water fountains up to the wrong plumbing system, and just couldn’t bother fixing it. So they put up signs instead.
this happens whenever plumbing or construction happens it isnt a fail…
i worked on the san antonio military medical center during its construction and could have taken this picture over 100s of things… including the toilets
Is there anything wrong with placing water fountains to allow people to wash their hands ?
And in that case isn’t it possible that the water isn’t suitable for drinking ?
I can even envision situations or places where you would be frowned upon (or worse) if you drank at the water source, e.g. after a Jewish burial.
So, what on Earth (and water) is constitutive of the Fail ??
Back in middle school our fountains had lead in the water, so we couldn’t drink from them. Had a teacher though who drank from them all the time and he reasoned that if a nuke went off nearby he’d be safe because of all the lead in his body. I r thunkin dat ejukachun wuz’nt gud.
Not such a fail. It looks like the plumbing has been disconnected.

then why have the fountain there at all if its useless

Lol. Hilarious.
Lol. Great.
News flash- plumbing can develop problems over time. Good water source can become tainted. Film at Eleven.
You’d prefer the government spend money to actually remove the fountain, when they could just unhook the water and put up a sign instead?
Happened at my work. Contaminated water got into the drinking water supply so we put the same sign up until the problem was fixed.
You’d think that they’d word it better. I bet a lot of people don’t even know what Non-potable means.
Serves the whole Darwin principle thang.
Word it better, like maybe telling people “Do Not Drink”?
But I really want to pote that water!
Excuse me. I poted.
Probably Engrish, eau non potable is a very common way in french to tell people you can use the water to wash your face and hands, but not to drink.
I don’t know about French, but “potable” is a perfectly cromulent English word; it comes from the Latin “potabilis”; it’s been around for centuries.
What are you doing here, non-retard? Please re-locate to a more suitable area of the internets at your earliest possible convenience.
But it’s not commonly used or widely known. The sign was written by a French-speaker?
um “potable” is used in the construction industry all the time. its even in most building codes

If you really look at it, it looks like it’s winking at you
I find that disturbingly exciting.

Because, it’s a Drinking Fountain for hand-washing and other such purposes, they make a fixture known as a “sink”. It looks totally different.
