They are allowed to use cell phones, as long as they don’t plug them in to the electrical power grid. But if they charge them from a diesel generator, or borrow someone else’s, that’s permitted.

Yup. Cellular phones were declared useful technology by the elders way back. The regular wired and home phone was useless because it was limited; but cells can go anywhere so they are good.
So let me get this straight… it’s ok for them to use cellphones IF they are not charged by the heathen power grid.

Um. You’re *ALL* thinking of Mennonites, not the orthodox Amish sorts. No, actual country orthodox Amish do *not* use cell phones.
However, given his age, it’s fairly likely he was in Rumspringa, the period when late teens and early 20s can go out into the world and use heathen technologies and such.

Most Amish can use cel phones because they are not physically tied into the grid. It varies and depends on what each group has decided for themselves. They are more likely to charge them using solar power (which the Amish use heavily). I can’t imagine charing a phone using a generator, but who knows. As for these being stupid rules, I have to give the Amish kudos for evaluating each piece of new technology to decide if it will enhance community or not. Cel phones were largely accepted because they were found that they do,but Amish wouldn’t talk on a phone while an actual person was present because the person present would be considered more important. Personally, I don’t think that is stupid and we could learn a thing or two from their attitudes. They are not technology averse, but averse to breaking down their community. They must be doing something right, because most kids 95% plus do decide to stay as adults, and yes, it is a choice.

I live about an hour away from where this occurred, so while I wouldn’t consider myself any sort of expert on the Amish, I guess maybe I’m a bit more familiar with their rules than the average person in the world.

That’s not exactly true, either. They just can’t pose for a picture or keep one of themselves, as it leads to pride and vanity. Also, there are different “orders” (or subgroups) in the Amish community. Each “Order” has different rules that govern them.
