  1. Franpa says:

Shopped, someone be usin’ too much MSPAINT!

  2. Arthur Eld says:

♬ How do we drive when our bus is burning? ♬

  3. Morgan says:

It’s Philly… The entire city is a FAIL! By the way, the [insert Philadelphia sports team here] suck – unless they are winning then they are the best team in the universe!

    • waggle237 says:

agreed, like now i gotta find a place to throw out all the flyers gear i bought last week when they were in the playoffs and winning, WORST TEAM EVER! I FRAKING HATE THEM SO MUCH! BUNCHA LOOSERS!

      • lnm4444 says:

I moved away from Philadelphia on 1989. I see SEPTA is still useless. Do they still have strikes every year?

        • Ted says:

They had a strike about a year and a half ago. On the first day of the strike there was a fire on an R5 train.

        • Mikey says:

Essentially, yes. It’s a union-friendly town, which is why nothing runs right and within a reasonable price.

  4. Praios says:

Ah, that reminds me of my schooltime. I was attending a Waldorf-School, a privat institution with high standards in environment protection. Example: Throwing litter in the wrong box could cause way more trouble than missing class or disturbing class.

But, many teachers and ultra-environmentalist families hat those old hippie-day-busses, full of stickers with “Save the Rainforest!” and “Say no to atomic power” and so on – and everytime those monsters start there engines, clouds of black smoke came out of these old, old vehicles, killing way more trees than the stickers could save ;-)

Just like on the seen picture… And from the clouds I know from my school-days, I don’t think the picture is shopped.

    • Awesome says:

      coll story Hansel

    • waggle237 says:

my cat’s breath smells like cat food!

    • jerry says:

thats funny becasue deisel is a lot cleaner than gas, all that black “smoke” is is sut burning off and is not nearly as harmful as emmisions from a gas conbustion engine, it can get if not the same but better milage than gas, it cost less to make than gas, is doesnt go bad as fast as gas, would you like me to continue?

      • david says:

Oh yes, the cancer causing diesel-particles/fine dust that can enter the cells of your body are so much better and way more healthier than the emissions from gasoline cars. ;)

  5. Unknownable says:

it isn’t photo-shopped (nor painted, etc) Diesel burns dirtier than gasoline but is more efficient (more mpg’s/kpg’s)

    • ;**; says:

Erm it says cleaner emissions not more efficient.

Regardless, I’ve never seen a diesel engine put that out whether it “burns dirtier” or not.

I do agree the pic isn’t shopped though, that smoke isn’t from the bus it’s from whatever is behind the bus and is nicely aligned on purpose.

      • d. c. says:

You don’t get out much do you? I have seen far worse coming from new diesel vehicles especially when first starting, or under a heavy load. In older vehicles with worn injectors, I have seen much worse when just running normally.

      • alex says:

Diesel is dirtier? I drive a diesel and i’ve never seen so much smoke in the back. The car manufacturers install particle filters now on diesels. And oh yeah, you do get an excellent mileage.

      • Jaydogg says:

you’ve never seen black smoke come out of a diesel exhaust?? I have. It’s fairly common with an engine that’s fairly old.

        • cronos51101 says:

Diesel is cleaner than gas. There are different types of harmful emissions from gas and diesel engines. One type that diesel produces more of is soot. In fact it produces a great deal more. This is why you can see diesel exhaust. However, soot isn’t too bad. It quickly settles out of the atmosphere and becomes harmless. Gas engines produce more of the “colorless” emissions that are more harmful. When you consider the environmental impact of each type and the amount produced, diesel engines run cleaner than gas. It’s still dirty, just not as dirty as gas. Also, it is possible that that particular bus has other measures included to reduce the other harmful emissions such as sulfur dioxide.

          • Blastislartfast says:

cleaner with more soot? last time I checked a dictionary, clean was still the opposite of dirty: ‘free from dirt or filth; unsoiled or unstained: the proper opposite of dirty or foul. Now the ordinary sense.’ clean =/= environmentally friendly

            • Archer says:

              Meh, it’s only cleaner because:
              - it’s the government calling it thus
              - it’s not an SUV, pickup truck or sports car.

  6. Ryan says:

I’d hate to see what it looked like before.

  7. jam says:

Someone ought to say something to that chain-smoker in the back seat! Who doesn’t know that you can’t smoke on public vehicles?!

  8. waggle237 says:

ah philly, where the only thing dirtier than the streets are the people!

    • Ted says:

Comcast is the dirtiest. They are are taking it upon themselves to replace trees with streetlights in residential areas.

  9. Pun-isher says:

i think they mean cleaner as in “emmisions are above your head instead of at your face”

  10. Arthur Eld says:

It’s supposed to say “Clean – errr”

  11. yet... says:

    cleaner =/= clean

  12. Mars says:

Actually, diesel engines, even with the black smoke , are more environment friendly than other engines. All that comes out of them isnt even toxic.

    • Jess says:

Not to mention you can mix ethenol into diesel. The buses in Brisbane, Australia are all diesel/ethenol powered and they still belch out emissions like that.

It’s not harmful like you said, just a little smokey smelling (Being that it’s pure carbon). Certainly better than getting a face full of carbon dioxide and not being able to breathe while waiting at the bus stop.

    • david says:

Diesel-emissions are toxic. The diesel-particles can enter the cells of your body an can cause cancer.
Diesel engines may have better mileage and the fuel costs less than gas, but the emissions are also toxic.

  13. tryhard says:

Going to have to agree with Mars on this. Diesel burns cleaner than gasoline. But who gives a damn? really?

  14. Protheus says:

I must say that this is not diesel exhaust itself. It must be old oil. If more oil burns in diesel engine smoke becomes blue-ish. And then it may become unstoppable until it breaks down.
That’s far from it. Just dirty fuel or old oil. We deal with that in Russia every day since we ride diesel tanks to work and old diesel submarines to vacation. Lucky government people ride clean nukular subs.

  15. Echo says:

It is still probably cleaner than most automobiles. It is most likely producing that much exhaust because was winter when the picture was taken. It is also a large, heavy vehicle.

  16. Jeanism says:

Ah yes, good ‘ol SEPTA…still striving for excellence. I’ve actually seen smoke like that pouring from many a bus.

  17. Mable says:

Septa buses have been coughing smoke like that for at least twenty years, likely more. Nothing new.

  18. Preacher says:

Its obvious that NOONE in this thread spends time around Diesel engines at all.
That soot is caused by the engine running rich.
The engine is running rich momentarially because the driver is accelerating from a standstill and the turbocharger has not spooled up.
Thus, running rich until the time boost levels come up.

  19. Mech says:

Gee people what the f*ck do you expect? its a bus – its has huge engine and most of the time it’ll be running all day without turning off.

Transport network UK “Reduce CO2 Emissions by up to 90 tonnes per annum compared to traditional diesel vehicles”

  20. Hakk says:

Its Cleaner then london in the industrial age prne

  21. f2 says:

diesel engines will spew smoke like this if you try to start moving in too high a gear. Driver is probably in second gear when he should be in first. Next time you see a big rig stopped on a hill, keep an eye on the smoke stack.

  22. Sean says:

Oh SEPTA…how I despise you. As a native Philadelphian, despite my love for my city, i can totally see this happening.

  23. France Hopper says:

So SEPTA, about that “We’re Getting There”, when’s that happening again?

  24. domerdaver says:

It says “cleaner”. As in cleaner than the other buses. This you can believe.

I have ridden the buses in Philthadelphia. There are three speeds: 1- fully stopped (waiting for embarking passenger to find exact change); 2- full bore accelerating (usually through a red light); 3- panic stop braking. Mode 2 causes the engine to belch prodigious particulates. Mode 3 causes belching as well, from the nervous bellies of the passengers.

Trivia: what do Philadelphians call their newspaper? The Inkwire, or more formally, The Fluffia Inkwire.
