I learned a lot of great things from watching Saturday morning cartoons.
jaymze, it sounds like you’re just basing that off the stereotype. I lived in Japan for a few years teaching English and I can assure you that if a person there has trouble with Rs becoming Ls, they’ll have exactly the same trouble with Ls becoming Rs. It’s just the exact same sound to them and I can understand why, having learned to make the Japanese “flapped” R/L several years ago. If you look at romanised Japanese, it just all gets written as R to make things easier for people.
I had a roomate who introduced herself to me as Yuri, from Tokyo. By the time I learned it was pronounced Yuli, I couldn’t break the habit. (She never corrected me)
I wonder if she chose Yuli because it sounds like Julie. Reminds me of girls named Risa who preferred to be called Lisa by English speakers (if they couldn’t make the in between sound).
My handi cap was that I always visualized a huge muscular man from Russia with the name Yuri.
Yuli I found so much more feminine.
The Julie idea is possible…..

kannadzuki, i’ts a reference to something the all knowing TMI Service told us about the other day. that the pronunciation for L is a combination of L and R and blahblah. also a reference to pretty much every post on engrish funny.
Yes I know. I referenced the same TMI post when I said “flapped” (I would normally have said “flipped.” It didn’t say that the R/L difficulty only goes one way. You did.

i have this frying pan. its the kind you get at the super market. very poorly made. mine did this while i was making eggs the other day
