As with virtually everything on Top Gear, it’s staged. He pulls the handle to bring the seat back up, not even subtly.
It’s a shame really, because sometimes they do quite cool stuff on Top Gear, like the Reliant Shuttle, but their constant bullshitting just makes you question whether any of it is real. Kinda takes the sting out of all their stunts when you are sitting there thinking “that probably never happened”
Is it a great show, though?

aw misery guts, that is just the point of the show. they are pretty much serious … never. you are supposed to question whether anything is real. that is what makes it so funny. they come up with so much bs, it’s impressive!
It’s intentional, but based on the other episodes of Top Gear I’ve seen, he’s probably doing it to point out a design flaw. It is a show that reviews cars, after all.
You’re not meant to believe he accidentally got hit in the face. You ARE supposed to notice that the car’s design makes it possible for this to happen. He’s just pointing out the problem in an amusing way.
In Jeremy Clarkson’s own words ‘We never said anything wasn’t staged, only that it was entertaining. If people need something funny to have actually happened to be entertained by it then they have a serious problem with their sense of humour.’

Yeah, pretty much everything in Top Gear is set up. Still funny though.

Fake. Watch his hand in the original. It never leaves the belt. In the close-up the hand reaches in and grabs and pulls. Watch his knee though. That’s what hits the release to allow the seat up, with a less obvious tug on the strap.
Still, funny as all get-out though.

I love cars and some of the ideas on Top Gear, but because of things like this I just can’t watch it. I want to see fast cars do awesome things, not three ageing men pretending to do things on purpose when really they’re accidental but that doesn’t matter if you have a sense of humour – what bull
Cmon, the show is pretty funny and if the DO fake the funny s**t its cool cause its funny. this is the best version of top gear then all the others! by a long shot. Hammmmmmmoooonndddd! ahaha!
