He originally had a fine handlebar type mustache, but had to trim it to fit under a gas mask per WWI German army regulations. He was rather bitter about that.
I heard one story, perhaps apocryphal, said that he grew it to resemble Charlie Chaplin’s on purpose, to associate himself with the image of a popular star. If true, that makes Chaplin’s critique in “The Great Dictator” curiously ironic.
I wonder if hitler ever watched it. I heard he had a private screening of the film, but who knows the truth.

I would kinda call rubbish on that; I believe the previous comment that he had to edit the original configuration to fit the gas mask is correct (although I believe it was the upswept Kaiser Wilhelm, not a handlebar.) In any event, the cookie-duster was a fairly common style before becoming associated so strongly with the Leader, and I kinda doubt he would have intentionally emulated a Jewish American actor
