» 83 Failures in Communication

  1. Elli says:

Ah, politicians. You can always trust them to not know too much about other fields of knowledge.

  2. Avis the Great! says:

Ummmmm… wouldn’t that lead (if this is indeed true) to men growing boobs?

  3. Maybe Not says:

Actually, increased estrogen does often lead to increased facial hair in women. This is not its only side effect, but it is a true side effect.

    • Avis the Great! says:

Then why do many post menopausal women often grow facial hair?

    • Gert the Great says:

Sadly I must agree. IT also causes pimples in some women when their bodies are overproducing like during pregnancy.

Thank goodness my husband loves me and says he will pay the $100 for the laser treatment to get rid of the weird eraser sized spot of hair I’ve developed on my chin. Ugh. Stupid hormones.

      • Avis the Great! says:

So too much or too little estrogen causes facial hair in women. Good to know.

        • Gert the Great says:

Yup. Also pretty much any hormonal imbalance.

          • Avis the Great! says:

I am soooo screwed when “the change” hits.

            • Dovey says:

I forget that people’s priorities change over time. However, I cannot ever see myself being like “meh” if I ever develop facial hair. I should be able to just shrug at it (at the least), but social sanctions of beauty norms, yadda yadda…

            • t-r3x says:

It’s because it’s a guy trying to relate to us women, and he’s failing. Ironically appropriate on failblog.

    • Tal says:

      Um. No.

Facial hair and other male secondary sex characteristics only come from androgenic action.

Everyone has both male and female hormones. Most men have low estrogens and high androgens, and vice versa. Some, however, have high levels of the “wrong” hormones (irrespective of their levels of the “right” ones.) In men, this leads to breast development, and in women, this leads to increased body hair (among other things.)

I think the misconception you’re running from here is that some women who have high androgens also have high estrogen. But it’s not the estrogen causing their hair growth. Estrogen simply doesn’t act that way on the body.

/20 years of personal experience with a hormone disorder. Also, a bunch of trans friends.

    • Bioariel says:

You do realize that plastic bottles cannot “give off” estrogen? And that that myth has been proved wrong…

  4. Miff says:

It kind of bothers me that I think the most wrong thing about that statement is how he describes a chemical “simular to estrogen” as if it were testosterone.

    • Gert the Great says:

Except testosterone isn’t anything like estrogen other than it’s also a hormone. Neither is progesterone actually.

Incidentally, both men and women have all three, it’s the mix that matters.

      • BoBo the Lesser says:

Don’t forget the (unverified) effects of marijuana on testosterone and prolactin, but that’s a male thing.

      • Dodom says:

Actually, testosterone and estrogen are extremely similar (both are slightly modified cholesterol). So are progesterone and cortisone, and all their artificial counterparts. Steroids form a tight little chemical class.

    • BoBo the Lesser says:

      They ARE similar.

  5. CatastrophicSuccess says:

Oh, God, I am so proud of my Governor. Yes, I am from Maine. This guy…just wow.

  6. mischiani says:

Biology fail aside, why is he putting plastic bottles in the microwave?

    • Lulu says:

Yeah, I was more concerned about the bottles plastic bottles in the microwave than anything else…

    • the kitten king says:

I’m not completely sure but I think that some baby bottles are made of the same kind of plastic as what he is talking about so maybe people are warming them in the microwave?

It’s not just the microwave though, there are a handful of plastics that have typically been used in the production of bottled water bottles, nalgene bottles, and other plastics that release this chemical when they are heated past a certain point, for example if you leave them in your car or live in Arizona.

    • drrn says:

I was wondering the same thing.

    • Dovey says:

My sister put a styrofoam box in the microwave one time and stunk up the whole house with a really weird smell. Thinking back to that, she probably brought us all a little closer to cancer.

But yeah, both materials are bad ideas.

  7. What in the hell was this even in response to?!

  8. fishy says:

The last sentence sounds like a joke to me- if this was recorded, was he using a joking tone when saying it? It seems to much like a punchline…

  9. JohnnyBravo says:

How the **** did he get elected to anything?

    • Tim says:

Many, many people in Maine (where I am from and continue to live today) are painfully, jaw-droppingly stupid.

    • clayonfire says:

62% of the population voted for someone else. He won by around 1 or 2%. It was a race between him, an extreme left wing candidate who got around 20%, an independent who got around 1 or 2% less than LePage.

Also, people tend to not think about who they vote for. He’s a business man who got turned away from a school in Maine that has a 97% acceptance rate his first try getting in.

  10. Shizno says:

Why am I not surprised this is a Republican Governor?

  11. JZPotter says:

God I loathe him and my dumbass state for wanting him

  12. Duke says:

    So…

one interesting and well-informed conversation, and then thirty folks who can’t be bothered to verify the accuracy of what he’s saying before condemning him as ignorant?

    Irony. It’s tasty.

  13. Jack Sargento says:

But women do have little beards…

    • Boomer says:

woman wanted to have a facelift, so she went to see the doctor. “Yes, I can do it, but you’ll have to return in a few months for a follow-up,” the doctor says.

“I would much rather have it done all at once. I don’t want to have to back,” she tells him.

Thinking for a few minutes, the doctor tells her, “We do have a new procedure. We put a screw in the top of your head, then any time you happen to see wrinkles reappearing, you turn the screw and it pulls the skin up causing the wrinkles to disappear.”

bags under eyes – dark circles around eyes

“Perfect,” she says, “that’s what I’d like to have.”

A few months later the woman bursts into the doctor’s office. “How’s the procedure holding up?” he asks her. “Horrible!” she shouts. “It’s the biggest mistake I’ve ever made.”

“What do you mean? What’s wrong?” asks the doctor. “What’s wrong? Take a look at these bags under my eyes,” she screams.

“Ma’am, those are not bags,” the doctor says, “those are your breasts. And if you don’t leave that screw alone, you’re going to end up with a beard!”

  14. Ochopika says:

…his “kiss my butt” comment to the NAACP was a joke too, I’m sure. Still pretty tactless as a politician. 30% of Maine voted for him, so don’t get too mad at your neighbors if you’re living here.

    • DiscoStu says:

It wasn’t a joke. He should’ve just said he had other commitments, he was attending a funeral for a state trooper, instead of suggesting that they were marking him a racist for not attending a MLK event.

  15. Soy says:

Wait, so is this a Fail fail?

I remember learning that estrogen in females causes male characteristics like facial hair and estrogen in males actually causes the easier burning of fat.

  16. Seriously says:

He’s actually completely right. It the same effect that body builders get when they take too many steroids and start growing breast.

  17. C-star says:

To everyone above who thought the fail was his saying estrogen causes women to grow facial hair, maybe I’m misunderstanding, but isn’t the fail that he believes that lady facial hair is the “worst case” effect of the leaching of a human hormone-like substance into water we drink?

    Maybe that’s just me.

  18. Oi Vay says:

Regarding the biology argument, coming from a humble med student- I feel both sides are correct. Estrogens do not have androgen effects, it’s effect is to make a human feminine. When there is TOO MUCH of a hormone in a body, however, it down-regulates the receptors, which in turn makes the body insensitive to that hormone, thus the tiny amount of testosterone that does exist will have the dominant effect (it’s all about ratios). This is exactly why steroid-popping weight lifters (taking testosterone) have shrivled balls.

  19. Simon says:

Why do everyone discuss about effects of oestrogen when the big fail here is the absurd thing here is the plastic bottle thing ? Bad science fails.

  20. Blarney says:

I think the fail is that he says it’s the worst the can happen…

  21. GbreadMan says:

Politicians are the ultimate Cliff Clavin’s of the universe.

  22. Gary Oaks says:

Wait, is he wrong in saying microwaved plastic bottles give off chemicals similar to estrogen?

Because it is actually true that increased estrogen levels in women would cause them to gain more manly features, just as increased testosterone levels in men, would cause them to gain more women features.
The body tries to balace itself (so to speak). When the people gain too much of the hormone significant to their gender, the body tries to counter it by producing more of the opposite hormone.

  23. Jorge says:

Pretty sure Bob Kelso is just trolling in this pic.

  24. Jamie says:

This entire statement is a Fail. This guy barely wins the election because he lived a hard life and then does everything that people from my state and I would assume most others, were raised not to do. I am a female HD mechanic so I am definitely not all about being politically correct but this guy just does what he wants when he wants without thinking about how it makes his state (my state) look. Besides make headlines for ignorant comments he hasn’t done much of anything except to try and erase Maine’s history. He made his daughter the assistant or secretary to his chief of staff when she was definitely not the most qualified considering she has “limited work experience” Yes I believe that there are way too many politicians that are scared about not being politically correct but at least if you are going to open your mouth, it better be because it’s what your people want you to say.

  25. Bastianlol says:

öhhh… if you put a plastic bottle into the microwave and turn it on… for hours if you want… nothing happends, because microwaves don’t have effect on plastic items lol
