Ok, speaking as the resident Catholic… Do any of you mocking the priesthood know the general population statistics on child molesters vs. priests? I bet you probably don’t. Lots of teachers get caught EVERY year and it wasn’t until the last 5 or so that they got fired or sent to jail. The school system would just.. you guessed it.. move them around.
Please get off your high horses like you are SO much better than the Catholics because you don’t personally know a child molester. You probably have one living in your very own neighborhood and don’t know it. It could be the guy next door to you.
I cannot speak for what the HELL John Paul was thinking brushing this crap under the rug but he’s dead now and the current pope has not been doing that whatsoever. Many of them have gone directly to jail just like any other criminal. Yes, in SOME countries the cardinals are protecting them and shuffling them around but it’s not happening in the USA any more and the current Pope has NOT condoned those cardinals who are playing games.
My dad once said there is 10% of every population that makes the rest of the group look bad. No one ever talks about the wonderful priests who are models of their faith because THAT doesn’t make for a good news story now does it?
As “the resident Catholic,” you should see that the difference, between, some teachers, Joe Blow, Pedobear, other various child molesters and Catholic priest, are that the priests are men of God.
They are supposed to be holy, righteous men and CELIBATE. So statistics don’t really matter here. When you place yourself in a position like that and do the things they did, you’re just asking for it. Might be different if it was just one guy, but it’s lots of em.
Oh yah because it is SO much more appropriate for a TEACHER to do that instead. Someone who specifically is entrusted with the care of your child. Men of God are still men and still failable. At no point did I so much as even imply in ANY way that I condoned those few priests giving the other more than 90% a bad name.
But it’s still ONLY the same percentage of any of the rest of the population of humanity. The priesthood doesn’t specifically attract child molesters any more than the Republican party specifically attracts closed minded bigots. Noticing something more based on your expectations doesn’t mean there are actually more.
Blaming the new guy for someone else’s bad decision isn’t exactly my idea of smart either. It’s not like the church was going to prescreen for this sort of thing back in the 50s and 60s when this stuff was going on.
