More like PR fail – the head of the union complains about passengers “harrassing” drivers by taking pics of them texting, and in the month of January, several pedestrians were killed by TTC vehicles.
Yes, the state of Toronto’s public transit system has actually degraded to the point where the above article actually happened. In the span of 1 month, there has been 4 deaths from a bus or street car. Two of those times somebody had to run along the bus and bang on the window cause the driver just didn’t notice.
Agreed. A better statement would be, “Please send us pictures of our drivers texting so we can fire them.” At least then they look like they’re trying to fix the problem.
This is a real serious issue. Here in Southern California there was a major commuter train accident when a conductor drove right through a wait signal and head-on into a freighter. He was later found to be texting at the time. I think something like 30 people died in the accident.
@Avis, there ARE security cameras on the toronto buses. But the problem is, the union has an agreement that if the cameras catch a driver doing anything illegal, the videos are not submissive as evidence. The head of the union makes every effort to make sure the drivers can get away with anything short of murder.
They are there to protect the drivers – union workers do love that security, and think they can get away with anything. I’ve been on Codiac Transit in Moncton NB when a driver has been using his cell phone and on Acadian Lines buses when the drivers is using the phone. It’s an illegal act in the maritime provinces to talk/txt on a handheld phone while driving, transit drivers commit driving offences should be canned, period. Transit drivers killing people should be tried in a court of law.
The TTC even helpfully took out a series of billboards warning us not to “assault the drivers”. What exactly that means is open to interpretation, but it has turned a lot of the drivers into power-hungry despots. In that, if you get into something as simple as a disagreement about whether a transfer is still good or not, the driver can arbitrarily throw you off the bus lest they call the cops and accuse you of “assaulting” them.
Of course, the popo are their union buddies so you know whos’ going to win that argument.
And you wonder why people get frustrated with our system.
Toronto again?
I think it’s safe to say Toronto is the official city of Failblog.
I’m so proud to be a Torontonian, riding four hours on the TTC for school, everyday, to and fro.
And this is why they should just change the city name to Monopoly. ISP, public transit, energy supply, petro… it’s all monopoly and us citizens are suffering from it.
Then do something about it. The recent outcry about usage-based billing and its summary effects in the Canadian parliament show that the average person can still have an effect.
No kidding. Try being an American Anywhere. You get used to it… I once ran across a street performer in England singing his orignal tune “Eat Fat Americans.” Still sing it to myself sometimes when eating bacon.
Contrary to the belief of Torontonians, bashing Toronto is not bashing Canada. There’s a whole flipping country out there that has nothing to do with that pathetic cesspool of a city. I’ve been on Toronto Transit, it’s the second worst transit system in the country.
Also how is the fact it was in Toronto make it “bashing” anything except the transit authority? If it was in the Podunk Times it would still be a fail.
A few comments made reference to the whole country and that’s what I think that person was referring to. The comments have gotten to be pretty broad-based, so relax. No one in Toronto thinks we’re the centre of the universe, that was just some bulls**t Eatons cooked up when they were going out of business.
The cameras are there not to catch the bus drivers, but those who assault the bus drivers. I actually befriended a driver who I’d catch first thing every morning after work. The crap he told me was ridiculous, they really do get away with the stupidest things. Massive racism and discrimination against sex, and when passengers complain about it, they turn the “out of service” sign on a boot everyone from the bus…
“Please don’t take and send us pictures of our drivers behaving dangerously. Put the videos on Youtube instead.”
That’s what people will do. And the drivers, instead of facing appropriate disciplinary action will face public humiliation and possibly further harassment from passengers.
this happened in ottawa a passerby in another vehicle caught a octranspo bus driver texting while driving on camera , oc transpo ios dealing with the issue as they should =by reminding their drivers that it is illegal to do so, and they even encourage people to bring up such infractions to oc transpo if they catch drivers texting while driving.. im sure the driver who got caught on camera is now without a job…
Well, glad to see that Massachusetts isn’t the only place w/transit drivers texting while operating. At least the MBTA has cracked down w/a zero tolerance and now fires everyone caught w/a cell phone while operating their train or bus. Or at least the ones that make the news…
Wow. I’m pretty glad I don’t live in Toronto. Actually, in Mississauga, most of the problems with public transit ever listed on the Internet, I never experienced while taking the bus. The drivers are actually nice and (for the most part) competent, though some can be a bit eccentric. None of the people I’ve ever caught texting while driving were bus drivers.
TTC workers ridiculous high wage and the union protects them from everything. We have station attendents that make in excess of $100,000 after overtime (someone should show failblog the pictures of them sleeping in their booths!)
More like PR fail – the head of the union complains about passengers “harrassing” drivers by taking pics of them texting, and in the month of January, several pedestrians were killed by TTC vehicles.
Agreed.
The bus drivers deserve to be shown excruciating pain each time they text (or sext) while driving, if failing to do so, they should just die.
Um.. how about the more legal and moderate approach of firing them?
that just wouldn’t be as much fun
It wouldn’t be great fun, yeah?
They did actually fire them.
Shocked everyone. It’s just about the first time TTC operators have been fired for anything, ever.
Firing + criminal charges.
or maybe those with transit commission are also driving buses…
… that can be difficult
ALL of the vehicular deaths in Toronto since the new year began are from people being hit by TTC buses.
Yeah, two drivers were caught texting while driving… made it to the local shock paper (The Toronto Sun) and then the drivers were apparently fired.
No, that made national news. I’m from Winnipeg and I saw it on TV.
portal anybody?
the cake is a lie
No thank you, good sir.
ttc ftw

dammit Toronto bus drivers…
they should be thankful passengers are showing them what’s going on. like holding up a mirror to themselves and letting them look.
there is a bigger problem, fix that
Agreed. A better statement would be, “Please send us pictures of our drivers texting so we can fire them.” At least then they look like they’re trying to fix the problem.

Some of the CTA buses have multiple cameras in them. One of them is trained on the driver. Three are throughout the bus. I doubt much goes on unseen.
Ottawa bus drivers are stupider.

So what’s the point of having them? Is it just to see exactly how the bus driver was killed in the event of a violent crime? That seems pointless.
They are there to protect the drivers – union workers do love that security, and think they can get away with anything. I’ve been on Codiac Transit in Moncton NB when a driver has been using his cell phone and on Acadian Lines buses when the drivers is using the phone. And you wonder why people get frustrated with our system.
So they label it as “dangerous driving causing death” or some sh!t like that.
Criminal negligence causing death sort of qualifies in the ‘murder’ category, doesn’t it?
Actually, that would be manslaughter.
Yup, the killing has to be intentional for it to count as murder.
And the unions wonder why they have such a poor public image. . .
Toronto again?

Oh wow, lookie here, bashing Canada all over again. Get a life, ppl :/
Try being an American on the internet.
Toronto is the Americaniest city of Canada. Further proof.
No kidding. Try being an American Anywhere. You get used to it… I once ran across a street performer in England singing his orignal tune “Eat Fat Americans.” Still sing it to myself sometimes when eating bacon.

What’s the worst? I really wanna know the TTC sucks pretty hard.
my guess is vancouver

That should be one of the questions for the written driving test…
Football is stupid. This picture is better.
lol
Yeah! Save space for pictures of the screaming, bloody victims of their indifference and incompetence!
“Please don’t take and send us pictures of our drivers behaving dangerously. Put the videos on Youtube instead.”
That’s what people will do. And the drivers, instead of facing appropriate disciplinary action will face public humiliation and possibly further harassment from passengers.
they should have thought of that before doing these things, then.
10/10 governments agree, don’t point out our stupidity, we’re blameless.
So tell us again how great unions are…..

Dont forget about the cardboard flap blocking the coin slot.
I think this was quite a while ago now…. strange that it took this long to show up here
