» 206 Failures in Communication

  1. JD says:

    Apes are not that fat.

  2. horse lol says:

i don’t see any fail here

  3. LULZ says:

can’t believe they called Oprah an APE!

    • Draconian says:

i agree, the proper term is primate

    • RacistSuck!! says:

Wow, one of the richest women on TV and you idiots call her that?? Unbelievable, actually no, it is quite believable. Poor trash just can’t stand it when others do well.

      • Sarah says:

Judging a person by how much money they have is pretty primitive of you.

        • fadedwinter says:

          Yeah, no kidding.

BTW, it’s not racism or jealousy Oprah is so disliked for, it’s the size of her overinflated ego and her sensationalism.

          • Sara says:

And how does that make her ape-like?? Egotism and sensationalism pretty much describes the entire entertainment industry. And the OP (of this comment thread) should have said richest, influencial and respected women in the industry. Now when any of you on this thread get your own NETWORK let me know.

          • Cletis says:

I dislike her show because of its content; I don’t care for programming that appeals to middle-aged housewives. Of course, since I;m not part of her target demographic, I don’t think anyone is either surprised or upset by that.

I don’t have an opinion of her herself; I’ve never met her, and don’t have enough interest in celebrities to follow news about her personal life.

            • neoritter says:

I dislike her because she decided to spend money on schools in Africa instead of inner city schools because she felt that those kids would rather have shoes and iPods.

      • Hmm says:

Just because someone is poor doesn’t make them ‘trash’. Most poor people work much harder than Oprah has ever had to.

And he didn’t call her anything so you are an idiot as well as an idiot

      • Rachel says:

Bush is also an idiot and somehow he managed to stay two terms in the white house… they’re just lucky idiots, period.

    • Abveo says:

Actually, I think the feature story was about an ape in some zoo that can have conversations with people by pointing to pictures on cards.

I remember a story about it a few years ago. The reporter asked it (in English) if it wanted to say anything, and it pointed to the pictures that meant “I want coffee”!

The fail is that it sounds like the description is talking about Oprah.

    • Patrick says:

They didn’t. They’re referring to the Gorilla Koko (which would make it a species ID fail).

  4. Ryan Waxx says:

I’m outraged that they could be this insensitive to apes.

    • you are right says:

      right!

    • Anniee451 says:

Me too! I didn’t see the fail at first – thought it was about calling Orca “Retro”when obviously she IS (I was watching her in the 80s – uh, never since) but missed the “ape/human” thing. Obviously an insult to apes everywhere.

Get a CLUE people; Michael Moore is an APE too – oops, was that racist? Apes is apes and peoples is peoples. Not a hard distinction to make.

  5. Dacky says:

    Yo man, thas wacist

  6. Zobator says:

    More like a win…

  7. Gibsonhacking says:

How can this not be a win?

  8. Matt says:

    TVPG. Sponsored by PG Tips.

  9. Nez says:

I feel bad that I thought the TV channel was ‘RETRD TV”

  10. Jeff says:

    HOW DARE THEY!!!!

If I were an ape, I would be pissed if someone called me Oprah.

Unless she gave me a care afterwards.

  11. Wizardling says:

An ape would probably be better help in one’s life :-D

  12. Moaoziz says:

    That’s a win.

  13. gps93 says:

My pet ape has gone berserk! He feels that is degrading to apes, aaah no! Stop! aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhsakij ndshjagn hjngsgkhdgdsfnjhsfgbasbgh

  14. cary says:

why isn’t this a win, petition anyone?

  15. sumguy says:

    Epic troll.

  16. ISTILLKNOWWHATYOUDIDLASTSUMMER says:

Those poor apes. Always being degraded. :(

  17. beerman says:

Look under your seats….You get a banana! And You get a banana! And you get a banana! YOU ALL GET BANANAS!!!!

  18. doobidoobidoo says:

    Not cool.

  19. James says:

Since the show is about an ape that can communicate through sign language it’s not a fail by any means. The box gives a description of the topic of that particular episode.

  20. Goldstar127 says:

    LMFAO!

  21. Oprah says:

It’s about time someone gets it right. Now kiss my red bare ass. Don’t think I wont sling sh!t at you. Damn humans.

  22. I kill Nazi Zombie-Trolls says:

    There’s a racist joke in here somewhere….

  23. Eukaryote says:

    Curious Oprah Learns The Secret

  24. Sophiaa says:

WIN is more like it XD

  25. Danny B says:

That is a WIN. Put that cult leader in her place!

  26. Boogyman says:

    Pure win.

  27. Alien says:

    Hahaha!
    Lmao :D

  28. Katna says:

Sorry, but this is clearly a TROLL WIN.

  29. Ape_Hunter says:

Sorry, but that description looks dead-on accurate to me.

  30. widogmom says:

That’s a terrible thing, to steal Dr. Phil’s description.

  31. Oceanwave says:

On Retro TV no less. Thankfully now she has her own network and she can fade into the big “O”blivion.

  32. CB says:

Are you guys just… completely unaware of the racist connotations in calling a black person an ape? This can only be construed as “funny” in the sense that it appears (hopefully) to be a complete accident resulting in something insanely appropriate.

This is in no way a “win,” no matter how much you dislike Oprah as a person. Maybe if you are unaware of the racial issue, it’s understandable that you might find it amusing, but if you’re calling it a “win” while full aware of the connotations? Congrats, you’re a racist.

I agree with the caption. FAIL.

    • Klara says:

      oprah.com/showinfo/Ultimate-Amazing-Animals-The-Ape-Who-Has-Conversations-with-Humans

      1. It is accidental.
      2. I think it’s a win, not because it can be seen as racist but because Oprah has about the same IQ as a (non human) ape.
      3. I wasn’t aware of the racist aspect until you pointed it out.
      (4. Technically Oprah is an ape, as are you, as am I, as is every other human being.)

      • CB says:

If you dislike Oprah, there are plenty of insults with non-racist connotations you could fling at her, if you must. The issue here is that in history, racists have referred to black people as apes, implying that they are less evolved compared to whites, as BS “science” once tried to claim. Yes, we know now that all people of all races are technically apes, but that doesn’t erase the historical connotations, and it remains a racist insult in this context.

It doesn’t matter if the intention was just to say she is “as stupid as an ape,” it will inevitably come across as “sub-human because she is black.” Thus, it is a FAIL whether the racism is intentional or not.

        • CB says:

Oh, and to clarify, while I understand that the fail pictured is probably an accident, my argument is directed at the comments calling it a win.

          • Klara says:

Well, let’s just say that I’m not really into being politically correct. As long no one means any harm it’s fine by me. It’s their intent that counts. And even if you would find it funny because of the accidential racism that still doesn’t mean you are a racist. Lots of people laugh with racist jokes, even those who are the subject.

            • CB says:

It’s one thing to be telling non-PC jokes around friends who understand that no harm is meant, but when you take it into public you are bound to offend someone. That is where the harm is. It’s always best to be “politically correct” in public situations, regardless of how you might speak with friends. To be knowingly racist, sexist, etc. in public is plain rude. To be unknowingly so is okay as long as one apologizes when corrected, but continuing to be offensive, under ANY excuse (popular ones: “you’re just too sensitive” and “well, all these OTHER people think it’s funny”) is as bad as insulting someone to their face, saying that you don’t care about how they feel and your amusement is more important.

“Lots of people laugh at racist jokes” does not be that NOBODY is offended by racist jokes, ever, so that statement is pretty irrelevant.

And in response to the below post, again, I am aware that the situation in the image was an accident and no offense was meant. It is the people approving of the statement I take issue with.

              • CB says:

does not MEAN*, not be. It’s a bit late here. -_-

              • Klara says:

The problem is that no matter the joke you are always bound to offend someone. And there is harm in everything. But stopping everyone from using all racist jokes would be just silly.
You can’t be unknowingly racist/sexist/.. because it contradicts the definition of racism and sexism.

whether or not a joke is apropriate depents entirely on the situation and you can’t defend the usage of free speech as a whole, nor can you defend complete cencorship.

You can only judge a specific post or joke. And since we seem to disagree on this one there’s not much left to discuss.

Please keep in mind that racist jokes aren’t the same as actual racism and that getting rid of the jokes isn’t the same as getting rid of racism.

              • murky 2.0 says:

How can you say such things, here of all places? This is a FREAKING HUMOR SITE. No one here is being racist, because actual racism ISN’T FUNNY. If you want to preach to someone, go to Stormfront. No one here is poking fun at Oprah because she is black. Grow a skin, will you? If anyone is actually offended by this, I say f*fm em’. People like that only make the race thing much worse than it has to be.

          • Klara says:

Also the fact that there are plenty of insults with non-racist connotations you could use doesn’t matter. Cause no one was trying to insult Oprah in the image anyway.

          • ndxtg says:

CB: u cant take joke, can u? this was supported to be fun. No one cared about skin colours and stuff. Ur the only one who raised this racism stuff up so far. In fact, if Oprah were white and they were calling her an ape, you would not complain would you. You are racist (to both black/white people).

            • CB says:

              Um…

If the target was a white person? Then there would be no racist connotation, as it comes from something historically used against BLACK people by whites. Not getting how pointing out a slur makes me racist, sorry.

As it is, I raised the point in hopes people would realize that calling a black person an ape is, as previously mentioned, a slur, in hopes that it might change their opinion as to whether or not this is a win. Apparently this is being brushed off as being “too PC.”

I see the humor in that this was a total ACCIDENT. I do not see the humor in people approving of the statement “Oprah is an ape” knowing FULL WELL (or at least, after I have pointed it out) that it can be seen as a racist insult.

              • tee says:

tl;dr. This side of the internet is no place for srs business.

                • Benj says:

+1 Why so serious? CB thinks people will browse FAILBLOG and expect the publications here to be of a serious nature and thus be offenced? Get outta here…

              • · says:

I guess I’m about to be labelled a racist for knowing Oprah is rather apelike, but not knowing she’s black. I’ll probably have forgotten the next time it becomes relevant, too.

              • Anniee451 says:

Too bad Oprah, no matter what color she may be, is still an ape. A half-educated ape, but still APE.

            • Rei says:

              1) It’s hilarious.
              2) It’s hilarious specifically because it’s unintentionally racist (for the aforementioned reasons). There’s a LOOOONG history of calling blacks monkeys as a way to imply that they’re less evolved.
              3) Calling something that has unintentional racism a “win” seems to imply that racism is a win.

It’s a hilarious, accidentally racist fail. We need not go any further than that.

    • lulz says:

      ()pr4h 15 4 f47 8|4(k 4p3 wh0 |00k5 |1k3 4 614n7 7urd. 637 0v3r 17.

    • Seriously? says:

You really need to calm down. It wasn’t meant to be racist, even if it was, there is nothing that you can do about it. Do you find it fine when black people say things about whites? Sure, no big deal, but when someone says things about black people, everything is blown out of proportion.

Why is it that we have a national black month, Hispanic month, Arabic month, and so on? Why isn’t there a national white month? Oh right, that’s racist. If you ask me, and many people for the matter, we as white people are being degraded. There really is no reason for all these different celebratory months.

I am in no means racist, but I found this hilarious. You just have to find the humor in regards that a mistake was made.

  33. Bernie says:

There is to much WIN in this, i’m blinded.

  34. Andrew says:

This is so obviously a WIN!!

  35. CB says:

Okay, now y’all are just being facetious. :P But I’d rather you be facetious than racist, I guess.

    • CB says:

Also, that smiley doesn’t look anything like someone sticking their tongue out. I would make a sad face, but that would probably look wrong too. (Who wants to start a long, wordy debate about the appropriateness of smilies?)

  36. RWW says:

An accurate description of many black women (cf. Michelle Obama).

  37. logan_nagol says:

I am with Colbert I don’t see colour so I have no idea if she is black, but the caption is an epic win

  38. R315r4z0r says:

In case you guys are wondering, this particular episode of Opera featured an ape that knew sign language and was communicating with humans.

    Just throwin’ that out there.

  39. Marts says:

It’s pretty damn accurate if you ask me.

  40. The Oprah episode where the ape talks to humans seems to be the most plausible answer to the program description, or it was mistakenly inserted but was meant for some other nature documentary.

You gotta admit though, she does sometimes behave like an ape by shouting all the time. “Were going to Awstraaaaliaa!!!!!!”. I mean, seriously, if it was The Morgan Freeman show or The Condaleeza Rice Show, no one would ever link them with apes. No racism, just inferences.

  41. Irwin says:

I wonder how many people would complain about racism if that caption had been describing an episode of say, Leno or Larry King.

(Presumably the same amount, anything other would be quite the double standard)

  42. Meh says:

    Yeah, that seems about right.

  43. sam says:

Thats a win in my book

  44. WMDKitty says:

I suppose it’s about the chimp that learned sign, Kanzi, I think his name is.

  45. Artey says:

  46. cb is right says:

cb is completely right here! thank you for your clear and cogent comments! there is a long history of describing/depicting black people as apes so as to demean them and cast them as evolutionarily inferior to white people. the humor in suggesting that this is by any means a ‘win’ needs to be seen through this context.

    • Anniee451 says:

Unfortunately no matter what color Oprah may be she is still an uneducated primate. This is a WIN!

    • lulz says:

      17 15 4 w1n f0r 4dm1771n6 5h3 15 4n n0n-3v0|v3d 7urd |00k1n6 4p3!

    • Seriously? says:

just stop. it was an accident, happened to be funny, so just stop.

      • R315r4z0r says:

No, it wasn’t an accident. The description of that show is not a mistake. This particular episode of Opera contains an interview with a monkey that knows over 1,000 words in sign language and can communicate with humans.

My mom watches this show and this episode was on the other day. It’s not a mistake or a racial slur. It’s just an accurate episode description that everyone else is making a pun out of.

    • RWW says:

      1. All humans ARE apes, technically speaking.

      2. Black people are compared to (non-human) apes because there tends to be a noticeable resemblance.

      3. The known fact that blacks are much less intelligent, on average, than whites (just as whites, by the way, are less intelligent on average than Asians and Ashkenazi Jews) says nothing about evolutionary superiority. Evolution is a process that adapts organisms to their environment. The environmental differences that led to marked physical differences between broad groups of people also, judging by the mountains of scientific evidence available, seem to have led to marked mental differences between those same groups.

      • murky 2.0 says:

Actually, that is quite an uninformed assessment. The gap between blacks and whites is easily explained by poverty, lack of suitable facilities and other relics of past racism that perist to this day. And that gap is closing. As far as Asians and Jews, it’s mostly societal.

    • CBs a dumbass says:

Shutup CB u stupid dumbass. You don’t have to come along and try and make others think you’re right by pretending to be someone else

  47. Nard4Reynard says:

Let’s not tell what was fail in this picture and just laugh if it was funny.

  48. Anniee451 says:

    WIN!!!

  49. tobellicus says:

    That’s really offensive to apes.

    • Callista says:

I don’t like Oprah either. I lost all respect for her the day she let Jenny McCarthy onto her show… But cm’on. Seriously.

  50. antidood1 says:

    That’s clearly a win!

  51. games says:

thank you for your clear and cogent comments! there is a long history of describing/depicting black people as apes so as to demean them and cast them as evolutionarily inferior to white people. the humor in suggesting

  52. Justice says:

Black or not, the majority here feel the same thing. She is an ape. We loathe this snake oil salesman enough to brave the racist stigma simply because it’s true. Truth trumps feelings and sensibility every time.

  53. Callista says:

I guess this show must’ve been about one of those apes they taught sign language to or something. They’re actually pretty interesting creatures.

(BTW, technically humans are apes–we are “great apes”, in the same category as gorillas, chimpanzees, etc., but it doesn’t really come up that often except in biology…)

  54. A says:

    So true.

    Oprah sucks.

  55. Chimpouter says:

    I smell jigga juice.

  56. Pickle says:

To be completely honest, that description is pretty spot-on.

  57. Haroh says:

    Hahaha.

  58. Nannou says:

Oprah might not be an ape, but her audience does act like it

  59. James says:

    Nazi Win?

  60. frankiemcstein says:

    how is Oprah an Ape?

    this isn’t a description a fail…
    it’s a failblog fail.

    not funny at all.

  61. deanna christine mulderrig says:

yesss who works for them? raise?

  62. Ak4rp0v says:

Apes can talk to humans. Info – 91%

  63. josie says:

lol, she had a special about amazing animals and on it there was an ape that talks so they gave the description of whats on the show that day not what its about

  64. CBs a dumbass says:

I’m just gonna say what I know a lot of people are thinking. Oprah’s a stupid N!gger. Not a N!gger because she’s black, but because she’s STUPID and black. See, to me, that’s the difference. I love black people. They’re awesome! Some of my best friends are black! But if you’re black AND stupid, (like Oprah, Obama, etc) you’re a stupid N!gger.

Btw, I swear I’m not a racist. I just tell it like it is.

    • "CBs a dumbass" is a dumbass says:

      1. Your unapologetic racism makes it clear that you are far more stupid than any of the blacks you hate and fear so much.
      2. The common attempt to redefine the term “n¡gger” to mean something other than its common usage is FAIL. Your technique, which is to redefine it as a black person who is stupid, is even more pathetic and stupid than those who claim that it means someone of any race who is stupid. I’m ever so sorry, but you do not get to redefine the meaning of the words used in your culture. It just ain’t up to you.
      3. The blacks you choose as examples of your “n¡gger means stupid black” claim are highly intelligent compared to the average human. This further underscores the lie in your claim that your use of the N-word is not racist.
      4. I hope your black best friends become aware of your views, and that they stomp your genitals severely enough that you cannot propagate your moronic opinions via your children.

  65. Wesmantooth says:

Its only racist if you want it to be,come on.
    Crying racist is pathetic.

  66. tums says:

    Win.
    Win.
    Win.
    Win.
    Win.

  67. swimmer07 says:

That is most defiantly a win

  68. people these days says:

if you look at the pictures in the background there is an actual ape with people…..its not talking about Oprah……so leave her alone…..there are not very many people in the world that will give a free car to people.

  69. Liam says:

I think this is a WIN!?

  70. Carlos says:

Human ARE apes, people – we are the 5th ape!

  71. Jordy says:

I still think it’s a win, reading all the comments. yeah I’m life less somehow.
I can’t see how people think this is racism o.o
    but that’s just my view.
I’m still going to school and my best friend is black. he has absolutly NO problem with these things, idk why some people blow things up like hell just to discuss and b1tch about it. since I met the guy, whenever I saw him I said “hey aapje” which means hey little ape in dutch. only it isn’t offensive. I asked him in a 1on1 convo once and he said he actually found it rather funny.

    My conclusion:
Calling things these days something racist is Racist itself these days!
I mean come on we’re all the same, so why is the name ape racist on black but not on white? you damn racist yourself. there is NO such thing as racism, you just make it.

  72. Atomus says:

This is ridiculous! Oprah is NOT an ape – she`s a cow!

    • Stephen Hawking says:

In an alternate universe, this image said “cow” instead of “ape” and everyone laughed without the racism debate.

  73. violetblood says:

    THIS IS WIN!

  74. Patrick says:

The only fail is this should say gorilla. Koko (one of the ones that converses using sign language) was just on Oprah not long ago. Ndume might also have been, I’m not sure. No one was calling Oprah anything.

  75. The Hero Who Saved The Fail Day says:

Why are people always bringing religion into conversation? I don’t want to know about ape evolution, this is simply racist…..but funny :P

  76. daziam says:

well actually the show featured an actual ape that could talk to humans, I mean anyone with common sense would have researched it a little first and seen thats what they meant, but yeah …. to much to ask I guess.

  77. Mr. Me says:

    Achmed: You racist B******!

  78. Peter says:

This is a win because it happened to WJAR and not my station!

This is a double fail, because if you notice, the person who took this picture is a subscriber of Cox Communications!

    Holla Providence, RI!
