Why is this funny?
Because by showboating an athlete displays their perception about their own superiority in their sport. By failing in their display and possibly injuring themself there’s a sudden ironic reversal of both expectation and intention as they undermine their own athletic prowess and lower their chance to succeed in the competition due to fatigue or injury spent needlessly in the display. At the same time there’s a classic “douchebag gets knocked down a peg” satisfaction inherent in seeing anybody with an excess of self confidence get their comeuppance.
I wrote my doctrinal dissertation on humor theory on similar phenomena.
