We have both a pet rat and a dog… the rat was sitting on my son’s knee when the dog decided to check her out… the wound on the dog’s nose bled profusely for a while. Rats are not totally defenseless, and not completely timid.
My sister’s dog was sniffing around my rat’s cage. I don’t think it even noticed it had been bitten. We noticed though, because the dog was wandering around the house dripping blood everywhere. Quite hilarious once we figured out it was just a flesh wound.

Rats are actually larger than gerbils and you can tell it is a rat because of the tail.

I don’t see how we can tell either way. It could be a smaller brown rat, or an adolescent, or a large mouse (it does look very large for a mouse). Mind you, rats and mice don’t actually differ taxonomically – if the species is big it is generally called a rat, and if it is small, a mouse.

more like win and being smart, that cat is the only one brave enoghe to go fight the thing but knows when to step back, if you watch, the gose in for multiple attacks, biding its time for the right time to attack

Yup. That’s seriously how it happens every time…..anyone who’s had a pet cat and a pet rat in the same house should know. My friend’s rats used to scare off the cat and eat it’s food out of the bowl and all the cat could do was watch and wait for the rat to leave. good times…..
This reminds me of that one old Loony toons cartoon where the cat doesn’t know what a mouse is.
