Fail. While it sounds possible to dig diagonally upwards, where will the displaced dirt go? You would basically end up burying yourself. Think about it, but not too hard your head will hurt.
You dig at about head height, the dirt you displace falls to the bottom of the hole you are in, you stand on the displaced dirt, you are now closer to the top of the hole. Logic. If you are trapped in the bottom of a hole and you have a shovel, you are not trapped.

If you want to get out of a deep hole, you have to be inside a deep hole. To do that, you need to dig the hole. If you want to get out of a deep hole, you need to create a deep hole first, before you can get out of it.
What a stupid video, What he said made sense if you hadn’t cut off the video. He was talking about digging sideways and up, if you can’t climb out. The implication is that the obvious solution is not always the correct one, and sometimes the difficult way is.
