If americans says “Speak english or die”, we can assume that this note is from the usa.
So you have seen or heard lets just say thousands (which would be a tiny percentage) of Americans saying, “speak English or die?” No you haven’t. So I guess it must not have been written by an American.
Seeing as how the note clearly says: “PLEASE DO NOT ALLOW ANYONE TO EXIST BEHIND YOU THAT YOU DO NOT KNOW PERSONALLY KNOW.” and not “Speak english or die,” it’s obviously not American.

We Americans don’t speak English, we speak American, which has over the years branched from English just as English branched from Latin. So if somone where to say: “speak English or die” I would assume the were from England.
English branched from Germanic. Spanish, French, and Italian branched from Latin.
My co-worker gets so pissed about non-English speakers here. And yet she can’t speak one single Native American language.
English isn’t a branch of any one other language. It’s more of a stem with many roots: Germanic; Celtic; Latin; French; Norse. And no, I’m not English. Neither am I American.
You wish America had its own language! To assume so is more then stupid. You speak English with a few different words, which is more like an accent. Loads of other countries speak English but have extra or less words because of accent, such as Scotland. Americans are too stupid to have their own language. Most of them can barely speak English by the way. I’m impressed you’ve even managed to turn the computer on without some form of assistance. America is the number 1 country for taking credit for other countries hard work!!

You mean *dialect* not accent. Accent refers to how the language is pronounced, not slight differences in spelling and vocabulary.

I agree. At least with exist, it could be a poor translation of ‘Don’t let strangers stand behind you.” as in an ATM vestibule or something.
The most logical conclusion is that this sign is posted on a door that leads to the outside of some type of health facility (such as a place that treats and houses Alzheimer patients). The management there don’t want their patients leaving whenever they want, so this sign is meant to convey the message that no matter what that person says, as long as you don’t personally know them or their condition, you shouldn’t let them leave the facility.

True, I don’t *know* it, but it makes sense to me. It’s a door somewhere with restricted access, and they don’t want people who ARE allowed through to hold the door for people who AREN’T allowed through.

They spelled “exit” wrong. It is definitely a spelling fail. Just because it resulted in another valid word doesn’t change that.
Way I see it, it could go either way. Could be a simple typo, too. But calling it a “spelling fail” confused the snot out of me at first, as I couldn’t figure out what the problem was.

I’m thinking because the sign is directed at visitors, it would be a sign leading INTO somewhere rather than out. I assume it wouldn’t matter if people are EXITING a location once they’ve been inside…unless it’s a psych ward or something? Whatever. Like previously said, I’m going with ‘wording fail’.
I’m going to have to agree – it doesn’t make sense for them to not allow people to exit, so I’m going to assume exist is the intended word, they just probably should have gone with another word choice there…

The US actually speaks ‘proper’ English. It’s you Brit’s that are screwing it up. Go look it up on the internet. Analysis of spellings, which before standardization were a good indication of pronunciation, show that American English is probably closer to what English was at the time of the American Revolution than British English is. In other words, you Brits used to speak proper English, but you don’t anymore.
That’s right guys. After all, Americans haven’t really evolved much so they’re probably using an older form of the language. You should be ashamed of yourselves for claiming to be better.
GRAMMAR POLICE!!! The sign is from an Alzheimer’s Home people! Quite common here in Canada, don’t let the forgetful out unattended! They are very resourceful and we have many ESL staff working here that could make that simple grammar error. However, What is behind me does not matter!!!!

Would be hard to meet people this way… you start off not knowing anyone, and then people stop existing because you don’t know them. Hmmm.
Isn’t this a jail or something, though? It seems to me the sign is trying to warn visitors of potential physical threats or pick pockets. It’s odd to state it as “exist,” but it still makes sense. Assuming this is a jail or some sort of correctional facility…
Make sure to keep a big enough gap between yourself and the one exiting in front of you at that place just in case the person in front of you “doesn’t recognize you!”

I also saw a funny sign in norway, pity I didn’t have my camera on me. It was on the door of a public toilet: ‘please shoot the door behind you’. And the Czech republic has signs at the ends of tunnels. Warning, tunnel ends here. Because it’s hard to find out whether a tunnel has ended or not.
