  1. googlleit says:

    I would hit them.

  2. kat says:

    Pedobear’s first choice!

  3. Gate says:

    i dont get it

    • CDThe says:

Basically dressing up kids in ‘sexy’ outfits. Kind of like giving bras and high heels to a 5 year old.

      • jesus says:

well, famous people do this to their children the whole year, not only at halloween

      • Bryan Elliott says:

Uh, check the outfits. They’re not revealing; they’re not sexual in any way. The only way you could consider these to be “sexy” is if you’ve already got a thing for little girls.

In which case, the problem is not the costume. It’s you.

        • Leto says:

          Not so mush.
the sexyness is in the costume, think it its way, take out that outfit and put it in megan fox, now look what you have :D

        • Traci Riddle says:

Sorry but this is definitely sexualizing our kids, and i don’t even have a thing for little girls….

          • Roger says:

Not really. There are no cleavage or skirts shorter than usual. About the costumes, ask any child what are his/her ideas for a costume for halloween. It would be something like “fireman”, “devil”, “police officer”, “nurse”. Maybe the fetishes that copy the common costumes, not the other way around.

I really don’t know what’s wrong with you people, probably you would end up grounding our daughter because when she was on the playground swing the boys the same age as hers would look at her panties.

        • Jaynie says:

Really? Not even the “naughty schoolgirl” one? Or the little black dress?

      • panda says:

there are bras for 3 year olds now.

      • afr says:

What do you expect in a country where there are beauty contests for 5 year olds?

    • Rillion says:

Apparently someone thinks these costume sexualizes young girls. I don’t think so, unless you’re already a pedophile. Only problem I can see is that “little black dress” isn’t a costume. It’s an article of clothing. You could get a dress like that for an eight year old at Macey’s.

      • anony mouse says:

it also makes them think that it’s okay to wear something like that everywhere, leading to what we’ve got from teens today: I don’t think I’ve seen a single girl wearing anything other than skin-tight jeans or booty shorts all year, and it’s nearly the second semester. sure, it’s artificially attractive, but it’s emotionally kind of sickening.

        • Hering says:

So if you dress up your kid as a pumpkin for Halloween, it will think it is okay to wear it all year?
Strange, I thought Halloween costumes ought to be different from every day clothing.

        • Rillion says:

Umm, except for the “purrty kitty” outfit, which looks like it might be strapless, none of these offer less coverage or are tighter than your average little girl’s sun dress. There IS nothing wrong with wearing “something like that” everywhere, except for the fact that people might laugh if you’re wearing a Halloween costume in July.

          • huxley says:

The problem isn’t that they are revealing, it’s that they are obvious adaptions of adult fetish costumes. If I had to guess what happened, I’d say someone (probably a foreign designer who didn’t know any better) was looking for costume ideas and copied an adult fetish catalog.

          • lemonade says:

So, you think a thigh length black dress and heels and makeup is appropriate for a five year old? THAT’S not sexualizing her?

I must disagree. Most of these outfits look like things you could buy in a naughty lingerie store. That’s my criteria for judging if it’s sexualizing girls. Big fail, imo.

        • trance says:

look at though’s! the skirts are as short as can be. i’m 14 and my mother and i went into party city (costume store) and looked at every single costume that we could find and every single one (except one or three) that if you weren’t wearing shorts or leggings you could see there underwear. the little kids where no exceptions. i saw this on Halloween plenty of little girls and teen girls wearing ULTRA short skirts. there is no way these are not revealing. i don’t think anythings is wrong with the kids its just if you wore that costume :/

      • Nebulanninja says:

        Agreed

      • Schmock says:

it’s never ok to rape someone regardless of what they wear therefore kids should be able to dress up as whatever they want and imitating adults is what dressing up is all about in the first place

      • Bert says:

Many years ago when I was a boy around the age those costumes are for we had a girl that was in our class that wore an outfit like those with the net stockings and all. She was a prostitute. That is what she chose to be for Holloween. A prostitute. Of course she wore her own cloths and did not buy a costume.

    • Witty Glute says:

What you don’t get it, is that Midgets are now offended to have costumes for their size, be named ‘Midget Costumes’, so a sue over there, a trial there, & a compensation right here.

    • jeppen says:

Didn’t get it either. I just looked and looked at names and stuff and tried to find something to interpret as a fail. It turned out to be some American conservative cultural thing that I guess is lost on Swedes like me. Oh well.

  4. LewK says:

    Really? I mean really now?

  5. Avis says:

Start ‘em out young it looks like.

  6. shirosaki144 says:

not very tasteful, but not really failblog material.

  7. Jet says:

I don’t get it. Is it because they’re young and the costumes are supposedly sexy?

  8. satanballs666 says:

    slutty costumes

  9. me says:

Kids costume, little black dress.. What is she supposed to be?

  10. poop says:

we don’t need failblog to point out the truth about kids halloween costumes. every single one of us has already seen these costumes in stores for years, and it doesn’t phase anyone anymore. Besides, these costumes are even on the conservative side for costumes aimed at little girls.

    • Lizzi says:

They are, I had at least 10 kids dressed up as belly dancers show up at my door for Halloween last night. “Princess Jasmine” costumes are even more revealing than these.

    • D.M. says:

Sorry for being the Grammar Nazi, but you made such a good point there that I feel obligated to help you out:
      faze*
That sense of the word (meaning to upset or “rattle” someone) is pronounced the same way as ‘phase’, but spelled differently.

  11. badboy007 says:

    I would….

  12. Squelchy says:

“I’ll take furry kitteh and alice for my 8 yo girlfriend….”

    …. Pedo Bear

  13. Someguy says:

Not a single one says “sexy” on it. So the “sexy” is assume or implied… so, who’s the fail here? You, the readers that imply the “sexy” or the person that failed this because he “assumed” they were supposed to be sexy? Either way it’s a disgusting thought process. They just look like lame ass costumes to me.

  14. hahaha says:

A toddlers in tiaras holiday special!

  15. Dr. Rock says:

    I see no problem here

  18. Shanya Almafeta says:

Kids show more skin than this at school regularly. Heck, the official Disney costumes for Jasmine, Tiana, Pocahontas, and Ariel show more skin than these.

If you were going to do fail, you could try those “young exotic dancer” costumes…

  19. Weegee says:

I bet pedo bear like these costumes

  20. Cyberkedi says:

I’m no prude, but kids’ costumes, especially for girls, are WAY too sexy! Sex is for grownups, thank you very much.

  21. Shade Tail says:

The only fail in that group is the little black dress “costume”, because that isn’t a costume. As for the rest, the only people who would have a problem with them have much bigger problems of their own.

  22. ClariPossum says:

Oh, look, ANOTHER costume fail. *yawn*

Wake me up when failblog moves on to something else…

  23. Pakalpojumi says:

Why Fail! This is little whore cosumes :D Joke! :D

  24. yvanovich says:

Yes it’s fail – not sexy enough, although the one in blue is not that bad.

  25. anna says:

They don’t seem “sexualized” at all.
The only one I wouldn’t let my kid wear is the little black dress.
Only because its just retarded .

  26. MyersVandalay says:

I don’t think it’s so much the costumes being specifically revealing or anything, more the lack of taste of any kind. Women don’t wear the adult versions of these costumes because they are clever, unique or scary, they do it because it’s the one time of the year they can dress and act like a slut without generally having the longterm impact on how people view them, and thus why many people would view this as creepy and/or wrong.

The disney princess outfits may show a bit more skin, but a young girls mind only thinks of the Arabian theme + disney reference. While many of these I can’t really come up with any real specific theme that a young child would think of.

    • Shorty says:

The last time I saw a Jasmine or Ariel costume, the part that would have been exposed skin was covered by flesh-colored fabric. Though they might have changed them by now . . .

Sadly, I don’t think the lack of truly exposed skin would matter to a pedophile . . .

  27. pedomous says:

i like de purrity kitty best:P
the others are too slluty for my taste :(

  28. Barney says:

    Pedobear approved!

  29. failuristic says:

The sadder thing is, I’ve seen worse prostitots when it’s not even Halloween.

    • Sheik Yerbouti says:

How is this the first time I’ve ever heard (read) that word? It encapsulates the whole situation so disturbingly well.

  30. ardenfanatique says:

my sister dressed as that cat in this picture a few years ago. its not that bad.

  31. Dave says:

Look, if you don’t think something like “naughty schoolgirl” is completely freighted with sexual meaning, go Google the phrase (in quotes). At work. Let us all know how that worked out for you.

  32. firespinner says:

sheesh…why would parents dress their kids up as sluts for Halloween? This is just sad beyond words.

  33. Jukka says:

I didn´t get it either, must depend on the country you cum from. I agree that these costumes are adaptions of fetish costumes, that CAN be a problem. On the other hand in my country (acutally it does not exactly belong to me:) you see young girls that show more leg and nearly everything between legs and neck, maybe not in octobre but in the summertime. Dressing up like a cat, a nurse, police women or some dead people can be a relationship to fetish, too! It´s not that weird, it´s only weird if you see all these costumes in a line. If you see one eight year old girl with one of these coustumes, thinking of sex and being older than ten years, you defintely have a different problem and wearing a chewbacca costume can´t stop you!

    • lemonade says:

If I see a little girl wearing what looks like lingerie, I am going to be disturbed. Seeing a bathing suit at the pool doesn’t make me have this reaction, so it’s the context and NOT the skin. Skin isn’t dirty, fetishwear on children is.

  34. ClariPossum says:

Figured I’d insert my two cents here…

While I’m not a fan of sexualizing young children, I will agree that the kids themselves are ignorant of the meanings and thus probably not really affected by it.

That said, I wouldn’t dress any daughter of mine like this for one reason: pedophiles. It’s more a matter of keeping her safe than keeping her modest. Don’t really need to give the creeps any more of a reason to target a child, KWIM? But that’s just how I see it.

    • ClariPossum says:

Well, I have to correct myself on something–that wouldn’t be the ONLY reason, but it would certainly be a main one.

  35. D_Shark says:

The Pedo Bear collection always gets a lot of attention this time of year, doesn’t it?

  36. chocolate says:

and people ENCOURAGE little girls to dress like sluts???!!!???? i can see a LOT of happy pedophiles hiding in dark trees…
what is wrong with society? what is wrong with people? is everyone a pervert nowadays?

  37. Blork says:

Is the Little Black Dress model a little person? I think she might be.

  38. growl says:

every single one of these costumes is literally a child-sized version of the adult costumes from the “sexy” section.

  39. somedude says:

huh, looks like people these days arn’t waiting for their daughters to turn 13 to dress them up like sluts

  40. me says:

So is the person who posted this fail a pedophile, because you must have one fantastic imagination to see these extremely non-revealing costumes as out of the ordinary. This is also a bit sexist. What are girls supposed to dress in snow-suits until they’re 30 because some old pervert on failblog may look at them the wrong way?

    • areyoukidding? says:

OK I signed up on here just to comment on your post.

      “extremely non-revealing costumes”

      I’m earth, have we met?

Let me put it to you in a way that your tiny mind might be able to comprehend- Walk through a bad neighborhood with diamonds on and a sign that says “I have 10,000 dollars on me.” It’s not your fault if you get robbed, right? This is the same thing. No, it’s not illegal, but it sure as hell is irresponsible to send you kid out dressed like Jonbenet

      You= FAIL

    • TheNahga says:

“What are girls supposed to dress in snow-suits until they’re 30 because some old pervert on failblog may look at them the wrong way?”

Considering that there’s probably some pedo perve with a snow suit fetish out there even that will not suffice.
The safest thing to do would be to keep them locked up at home until you can marry them off.

  41. blog gamer says:

    thanks for sharing :) )

  42. Zeeps says:

These don’t show any more skin than most actual children’s dresses, so I’m not sure what the problem is. I realize that sexualized versions of these costumes are common, but since when did imagery of devils, cats, and school girls lose all non-sexual connotations?

I guess I can understand the pedophile argument, but if a child is coming into unsupervised contact with a sexual predator then there are bigger issues than how they dress for Halloween.

    • Gert says:

So you are saying you would recognize a sexual predator? Funny, I knew one actually, worked at a bowling ally I used to belong to a league on.

His boss knew about it and let him wander the lanes because they were adult female leagues and it’s the parent’s own fault if they bring their kids. I threw a stink about it and he eventually got fired BUT in the mean time, SEVERAL of the moms had their daughters there right around the guy all the time totally unwittingly until I ratted his perverted self out.

Cause see…. a mom can recognize a pedophile doncha know.

      Not.

NEVER assume you are an expert at ANYthing. It makes you look foolish when you are wrong which you will inevitably be.

      Pedophiles look like everyone else.

      • ClariPossum says:

I have to agree with this.

Plus, as I said above, the child could become a target if they’re dressed provocatively. Say there’s a pedophile just down the street, and he didn’t notice the kid until she wore one of those costumes. Then she’s a target and he could easily stalk her.

Not to say the costume is necessary to get a kid noticed by the creep, but you never know what might get their attention. Better safe than sorry.

        • Chairman Meow says:

I’m not directing this at you specifically, but at everyone who is thinking along the lines of “zomg pedos are over 9000 times moar attractid to little gurls who dress lyke sluts!” And I commend you and anyone who acknowledges that a costume is not necessary for a predator to notice a potential victim. However…

Let’s not blame the victim. A pedophile would notice a child the first time they saw him/her, regardless of what they wear. A pedophile would not start stalking a child because they wore a “provocative costume,” a pedophile would start stalking a child because they think it is alright to stalk a child.

Boys are equal targets for people who sexually assault and rape children. Most people I know would rather shoot themselves in the foot then dress their boy up in a “provocative” costume. Do the numbers on that one.

        • Shade Tail says:

So there is no way to know what might draw their attention, but jump to a conclusion anyway just in case. Yeah, that makes sense.

And BTW, “He targeted her because of how she was dressed!” is a long-discredited line of argument, because it actually *excuses* the predator by putting the blame on the victim. A predator *might* assault a kid for dressing like a school girl with red devil-horns on her head, but that’s not the fault of the costume.

      • Shade Tail says:

“So you are saying you would recognize a sexual predator?”

Uh, no. Zeeps was very obviously not saying that. You wrote a fairly long and totally irrelevant comment responding to something that Zeeps didn’t write. Congratulations.

  43. AWSUM SPELR says:

how is “Little Black Dress” a Halloween costume?

  44. sandy va-jean says:

I’m pretty sure a little girl came by my house dressed as the “Delinquent Devil”. I was shocked, she looked like an 10 year old skank.

  45. Helion says:

Costumes don’t have to be revealing to attract men who like young girls, in fact I would argue that the more revealing costumes make them look more adult and hence less attractive.

I certainly wouldn’t send my children out dressed like that. Yes they would look adorable, but someone might find them so adorable they decide to take them home with them. It’s sad but particularly as society encourages children to cover up more and more and it’s rare to find even a clothing advertisement with an actual child in it, the girls who wear these are really going to stand out – and that’s not the best way to keep your children safe.

  46. That Guy says:

I’ve been in that store! But they didn’t have these..Not for kids at least. They had adult ones though.

  47. The Other Guy says:

FAIL for calling this a FAIL!! Anyone who has ever seen a childs dance recital has seen more revealing that this.

  48. RCKeeper says:

For all those who are concerned about the pedophiles, I read an interesting article today:

Apparently, there is no empirical evidence of any increase in sex crimes against children on/around Halloween, despite all the hype. This was news to me, but it makes sense when the article also points out that the majority of pedophiles target children they know, as opposed to kids off the street. Most sex crimes in general are committed by someone the victim knew previous to the attack.

The article also made note that while pedophiles receive more hype, children are more than twice as likely to be killed by a car while walking on Halloween night than on any other night of the year.

That being said, I don’t agree with the costumes either. . just thought it was a really interesting article that points out how at times our fear response is out of proportion to the actual probability of something happening (take people who are terrified of flying, but fine with driving, for instance)

    • Chairman Meow says:

Thank for dispelling the myth that pedophiles (zomg!) are the reason these costumes are bad. Pedophiles are interested in CHILDREN not children dressed like adults or vice versa. Nobody is attacked or stared at because of what they wear. They are attacked or stared at because somebody thought it was alright to attack or stare at them. This includes the pedophile/child dynamic.

  49. Chairman Meow says:

This is why these costumes are fail.

    http://www.aboutkidshealth.ca/News/Sexy-babies-how-sexualization-hurts-girls.aspx?articleID=10006&categoryID=news-poh3

I recently saw a 16-year-old walking around with her mother carrying a “sexy referee” costume that she most likely wore for Halloween. My guess is that wasn’t the the first time her Halloween costume was an unoriginal adaptation of a popular image portrayed in a “sexy” or “cute” way.

The main reason these costumes don’t look “revealing” is because there is nothing to reveal on an 8-year-old-girl. Just because girls dress worse than that throughout the year does not mean that it’s alright for companies to profit on selling a child version of sexy costumes.

Please stop thinking that the portrayal of women existing to look sexy is good and that it’s okay to start them early as long as the outfits they wear aren’t too “revealing.”

    • Shade Tail says:

[[Please stop thinking that the portrayal of women existing to look sexy is good and that it’s okay to start them early as long as the outfits they wear aren’t too “revealing.”]]

If you think the costumes up at the top are “sexy” then you’re the one with the problem here. The only one that could conceivably be labeled that way is the “little black dress” one. The rest are “little girl cute” at worst. Unless, of course, you have a thing for a modestly-dressed school girl with or without fake devil-horns. And if you do, then, once again, you’re the one with the problem.

And no, we women do not exist merely to be sexy, but it’s not a crime when we go that route. Believe it or not, we ladies have the right to turn heads and go for the knock-out. So kindly stop putting us up on pedestals and treating us like angels of purity. That is condescending and demeaning.

Now, I certainly would agree that the sexy-look is not appropriate for very young girls, but, once again, only one of the costumes up at the top even comes close to that look. The rest are perfectly appropriate and (in my opinion) excessively cute. If I had a daughter, I would probably veto “little black dress”, but I’d love to see her in any of the others. Unfortunately, both my kids are boys.

  50. michelle says:

ok first of all it didnt say “naughty” school girl it said wicked school girl and only becuase she has horns on her head HELLO! shes supposed to be a devil none of those costumes are revealing anything ok so get over it!!!!!!!!!

  51. SlimeBeherit says:

I agree. If there were male version of these would be costumes, they would actually look like what they’re suppose to be( cat or a devil). The alice one is very telling, being how Alice doesn’t wear a short skirt in the Tim Burton version(as far as I know) she wears this.

    http://www.halloweenplayground.com/images/disguise/tim-burton-alice-costume.jpg

She also wears another dress that isn’t anymore revealing. I tried looking for a kids version of this costume but to no avail, aside from a custom made costume. I kept bumping into this kids costume.

    http://aliceinwonderlandcostumes.biz/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/kids-alice-in-wonderland-C48102-121×300.jpg

Being Alice never wears this I wonder where they got the inspiration for this version

  52. kaih says:

well when your kid get knocked up you will know why.

  53. somechicksings says:

I guess failbook is not the best place for nuanced feminist discussion.

  54. Palmer. Face Palmer. says:

I think I’ve found your problem here. To every non-sexual person, these costumes are normal costumes. I’m even pretty sure at least one of these costumes was worn at least one Halloween. To some, you picture this on a Brazilian girl and you get hard. That is your fault. This post was more of a political statement than anything funny.

Absolutely. I don’t know what is wrong with this people. Regular costumes are usually used in fetish costumes, not the other way around.

These people would probably get mad at their little daughter because a friend of hers looked at her panties, so she was a slut for not hitting him.

Does anyone else think the “wicked school girl” costume sort of looks like Emily the Strange but with devil horns?

I see these kinds of costumes on sale where I live, and they always puzzle me. Not just on a moral level (although I personally don’t understand adults who allow children under their care to dress in mini versions of sexy adult clothes), but because it’s goddamn October and miniskirts are non-optimal autumn clothing. Adult women may frequently wear skimpy Halloween costumes, but grownup Halloween festivities don’t typically involve as much outdoor walking.

Also, the Alice costume makes me sad. I went as Alice one year in grade school, but my costume was patterned off of the Disney outfit (in turn patterned off of John Tenniel’s illustrations), complete with modest skirt and pinafore, and waaaaay more adorable.
