It’s a win. The actor who played Superman in the original superman movie broke his back. It’s a reference to movie history. And it’s long enough ago that it’s not being mean/insensitive anymore. The actor in question has either accepted it or is dead by now.
Aside from which, it’d only be a fail if it were some guy who’s not paralyzed, anyway, and from the guy’s build, I doubt that’s the case. (Long term parapalegics tend to get very buff in the upper body and are often rather scrawny in the gut (even when the break is below that). Most peoples’ arms are nowhere near big enough to handle hand-turning wheels holding your body weight as the only method of self-ambulation that provides any dignity at all (an army crawl is also possible, but leaving a parapelegic person to crawl around like that would be cruel).)

This. There’s a big difference between making a stupid christopher reeves joke, and taking a picture from the internet of a guy in a wheelchair (probably w/o his consent), superimposing “FAIL” on him because he’s in a wheelchair, and posting it on a public website.

I’d say it would only be a fail during the time Reeve was still adjusting to being paralyzed. It was at least 2 decades ago. By now he’s either adjusted to it or has died of something.

but which Pike? for my money, wheelchair-using Pike from the 2009 Star Trek movie would be much more WIN than the Pike from the original series episode “The Menagerie”. IMHO, that change is a positive reflection of changes in attitudes about disabilities over 40+ years.

It’s not funny labeling this as a possible fail. It’s insulting. Failblog owners should take away the photo and re-post it as a clear WIN. Otherwise it’s offensive.
I agree Santagio and Mat. Is it (possibly) considered a fail because he is disabled? Are disabled people not supposed to dress in (kickass) costumes like this? Probably just made the poster uncomfortable, seeing a disabled person be so kickass.

Wheelchairs are so freaking expensive, and really hard to push around all the time unless you have the upper body strength you get from A LOT of practice. I seriously doubt he went and bought a wheelchair for his costume.
Also, if you look at him, he has the build needed for self-propelling a wheelchair (note the extraordinarily large arms that are limited to atheletes, martial artists, and parapalegics). My money is on parapalegic.

Why shouldn’t a person who is in a wheelchair be judged for the quality of their costume on a site like this? That wheelchair is his personal wheelchair,custom made for him. It is not a generic wheelchair purchased from some random location or thrift store. This should be removed from the site, it is simply inappropriate to “vote” on the quality of a disabled person’s halloween costume unless you are going to start voting on Halloween costumes for able bodied individuals as well.
