as someone pointed out, in the UK “Free From” is referring to food that’s free from allergens. sainsbury’s (where the picture was taken) sells quite a few of those things.
But how can food be free from all allergens? I mean seriously. I’m allergic to neutrasweet and mangoes and pineapple and coconut and mold. (Yes, I am aware that that is quite a list, it’s also not complete)
I know folks that are allergic to shellfish, but not fish-fish. And conversely I know folks allergic to fish-fish and not shellfish.
I guess my question is, what is an allergen?
It’s not free from all allergins. One product may be free from gluten, another may be free from nuts. This is just a section where they are all grouped together. You check each label to see what it is free from.
Then again, I don’t think any of these would be free from mould if left long enough.
(Before someone makes a comment on this, I’m British, so spelling it “Mold” just seems wrong to me, so I refuse!)
Certain cheeses are on my “do not eat” list because of the mold. Bleu Cheese for one. Grouping them together seems a bit confusing actually. To me that is.
I don’t think that cheese would be in this section, it’s normally the really common allegies (Like I said earlier, gluten and nuts…These are the only two I can think of from the top of my head)
It’s seems normal to me, but I guess it’s because I’ve seen it around for so long.
I think it’s meant to make it easier for those with allegies, so they don’t have to search the label of every product on the shelves to find one they can have…Just to find out they are sold out.
Instead they just go to this section, and pick what they want, knowing they can have anything.
Barging in, to see if I can post here or whether I’m banned on all of the Cheez sites. Guys, go check it out: the regulars on Pundit Kitchen have rebelled against heavy-handed moderation (really, silly OTT modding) to the point that the comments were disabled all together.
Well, um, I imagine I look like a complete nutter barging in here with conspiracy theories and boobs … Maybe someone here will recognize me from the old days and take pity. But likely they’ll just keep gingerly stepping over this thread and try not to disturb it further, LOL.

Oh, and nice rack. Oh, and please don’t drag all your trolls buddies over here. Attempt to overwhelm us and we’ll just invoke the PTB and ban you from here too.
Hey lcb, nice to see you again. The boobs were an inside joke over at pk, when pk wasn’t borked. Don’t worry Zombie, this isn’t about trolling. We had a rotten moderator experience is all.
No, the sign is still a FAIL, and so are you. If that was the meaning intended, it should have read ” ‘Free from…’ Foods”, indicating that ‘Free from” is being used as a non-standard adjectivial phrase.
As it is, it does indeed imply that the contents of the bins and the packages are actually “Free from food.”
this is a crappy fail. i work at that chain of supermarkets, and they have a brand of gluten-free foods called “Free From”. You can even see them in the picture. The yellow boxes immediately below the sign. For example: http://www.wheat-free.org/images/sainsburys_teacakes1.jpg
I friggin’ love yorkshire pudding with sausages baked in, Toad in the Hole. One of the few recipes passed down from my grandmother. I was surprised to find out that other Americans call some heinous looking thing with toast and an egg toad in the hole and I’m the only one who thinks the breeze under the door is a draught not a draft.
lol, i know what chain this ad campaign is from, the “free from” campaign that is, supercentre by lablaws grocery store in canada. signs in the store also include “free from chicken” over the chicken, “free from pork” over the pork, etc.
i have no idea what its supposed to mean but it really just gives the impression that their advertising the total lack of food in their foods…
(its not how the store marks out gluten free foods, as some of you have said, i know someone who can’t eat gluten and this is my local grocery store, the gluten free foods say “gluten free” not “free from food” haha)
Its been a while since I was in america, but when i was there, to find, say ‘gluten free’ you would search every item in an isle for the thing you wanted, checking the back for the list of ingrediants. it was frustrating and time consuming.
so lets say they hang a sign, saying ‘gluten free’ … and ‘dairy free’ and ‘nut free’ and… well, those lists can get pretty long. then you have to have the isle space for it.
Having one space for all the ‘free from…Insert food ingrediant’ you put them in one spot.
“free from food” is a catchphase. Like “mind the gap”, for ‘be careful’ or “way out” instead of exit.
Not much of a fail really… Store is ‘Sainsbury’s’ in the UK. ‘Free From’ is their range of gluten free foods for those with Celiacs or general grain intolerence.
I don’t want to know…
(lol … I was thinking of you just now ↓↓ )
Sure is free
These will certainly help me with my Jesus diet…
On the upside, this is more likely to be danger free than if it said “Free foods from” and then the sign was incredibly blurry to hide the country.
Are you ready to be liberated?
The last addiction you’ll kick.
This must be the no pretzels aisle.
Free From Foods – free of GM, and all that s**t. Perfectly understandable sign.
Could do with a hyphen…
Actually it’s free from wheat/ gluten/ nuts/ sugar/ etc. I guess it’s more appealing than “restricted diets”!
Oh lawds
What’s the matins?
Anyone else get the feeling that they accidentied a word or two?
Is it only the Yorkshire Puddings that are free from food?
Maybe the steak pies behind them are too.
Why so fail? ‘Free From’ is a section of food that doesn’t contain things like wheat or gluten and are thus safe for people with allergies.
I’m allergic to foods, so this is where I shop.
What are you a specialist at, again?
that’s what I think, truranp…I think this is a Failblog fail
If they had quotation marks on the sign, that would be made at least marginally clear. As written, the sign is misleading at best.
So why wouldn’t you lend them some? Do y’ou nee’d s`mor’e?
Silly zombie — I have plenty of apostrophes.
I suppose I could dig out some extras & glue them to others to make quotation marks…
Sooo, it’s all just artificial flavoring, taste free fillers, and other artificial materials? I’m…not eating that.
Say it five times fast.
ititititit
Ahaha you said “tit”!

Now I’m in the mood for a neutrasweet, mango, pineapple and coconut smoothie!! Want one, Avis?
Since I really don’t fancy a visit to the hospital, I’ll pass on this offer.

Typically they apply to the list of 11 or so “legally declarable” allergens, from that, dairy, wheat and egg being the main offenders.
Mostly products with Gluten, milk, flour and the like.
Ah good ol’ Sainsbury’s…
Though some quotation marks wouldn’t have gone amiss.
Why would quotation marks be needed? It’s a Sainsburys brand, you wouldn’t put quotation marks around the name of a brand!
It’s a spelling fail.
which word is misspelled? “free”, “from” or “foods”?
If the sign didn’t include the word ‘from’ this would be a win.
Barging in, to see if I can post here or whether I’m banned on all of the Cheez sites. Guys, go check it out: the regulars on Pundit Kitchen have rebelled against heavy-handed moderation (really, silly OTT modding) to the point that the comments were disabled all together.
And my apologies for the avatar – it’s taking a while for my usual picture to load. No offense intended, there.
You think anyone is gonna take OFFENSE to that avatar? LOL
Well, um, I imagine I look like a complete nutter barging in here with conspiracy theories and boobs … Maybe someone here will recognize me from the old days and take pity. But likely they’ll just keep gingerly stepping over this thread and try not to disturb it further, LOL.
*lurches carelessly through thread*
It’s my nature to disturb things. It’s also my nature to question things, like how did you get the dreaded ‘i’ word past ZM so quickly?

O hai, pittypat! I remember you. I don’t believe I’ve been introduced to your boobs, though.
Hey lcb, nice to see you again. The boobs were an inside joke over at pk, when pk wasn’t borked. Don’t worry Zombie, this isn’t about trolling. We had a rotten moderator experience is all.
ah, that explains that. I wondered why so many threads had no comments and why I couldn’t make one lol
This isn’t a fail at all, or a spelling fail. Jesus. “Free from” foods are a category including “Gluten-free” and “Lactose free items”.
Maybe it’s a fail that the retard behind the camera actually thought it WAS a Fail? =]
Its shorthand advertising – a catchphrase that everyone understands.
Evidently not.
Probably a “Reality WIN”
Truth in advertising win?
I wanted to say that exactly.
this is a crappy fail. i work at that chain of supermarkets, and they have a brand of gluten-free foods called “Free From”. You can even see them in the picture. The yellow boxes immediately below the sign. For example: http://www.wheat-free.org/images/sainsburys_teacakes1.jpg
This sign is not a fail as others mention. Free from foods are foods that are free from various allergens. Some may be gluten-free or dairy-free, etc.
###
I REPEAT THIS SIGN IS NOT A FAIL. IT IS A WIN! I LOVE FINDING STORES WITH FREE FROM FOODS!!!
###
I have celiac disease and can’t eat even trace amounts of gluten.

Actually that is from Sainsbury’s in the UK who have a section of foods specifically branded as “free from” gluten, wheat or dairy.
I know that colour scheme and its definitely from there.
And the £ is rather a give away too.
Its been a while since I was in america, but when i was there, to find, say ‘gluten free’ you would search every item in an isle for the thing you wanted, checking the back for the list of ingrediants. it was frustrating and time consuming.

Wtf ? and so we’re free food?
Not much of a fail really… Store is ‘Sainsbury’s’ in the UK. ‘Free From’ is their range of gluten free foods for those with Celiacs or general grain intolerence.
