No. No no no no no! The _point_ is that this statement was NOT by Swift (she might have said ‘jumping anyway’ first, but the general form of the statement is quite old). Statements like ‘Courage is not the absence of fear. It is being afraid, and acting anyway,’ and others of that general variety were made long before pop singing was even around. So it is an attribution fail. Even if she was the first to say it in these exact words.
Also ‘jumping anyway’ makes it sound like she’s advocating suicide. But that’s another fail which pales in comparison to the attribution problem.

Yeah, when I read the title “Greeting Card Fail,” I thought it meant that the fail was specifically relating to the fact that it was on a greeting card, and I couldn’t figure out what was so funny. It really should have been labeled “Quote Fail” or something to that effect.

Uh, it doesn’t matter about the card’s personal take on the word. The saying does not describe fearless. Fearless is the absence of fear. The card is describing bravery and maybe even personal strength.

Also, does it really matter? This card is marketed towards little girls who need to hear encouraging things from time to time. So what if it’s linguistically incorrect? Taylor Swift is an icon to these girls, and she’s actually a pretty good role model, unlike so many other young adult celebrities. They’re children, and if this card means something to them who are any of us to rip it apart over the internet. but i do agree on this, i’m not sure WHY it was posted in the first place.
That is even more reason to make sure it isn’t a grammar nightmare. Role models have an even greater influence on the young. That’s even more powerful than a teacher telling how to use grammar, except that here it’s being butchered and will sink deeper.

“Fearless” means “having no fear”. You can’t just make up new definitions to words. It defeats the purpose of language.
I’m sorry, but I refudiate that statement.

The word ‘ageless’ is using the word ‘age’ as a verb, not a noun. “To get older”, rather than “number of years lived on the planet”.
Reckless, however, is a good one, but you still fail because in this case the word “fearless” DOES mean “lacking fear”. It’s the definition of the word. She’s stealing a quote from someone else, trying to alter it so that it sounds ‘original’, and failing in the process.

I know, it’s asking a lot for the average failblog poster to grasp this subtle distinction, but I’ll spell it out anyway (that’s “spell out”, as in explain, as opposed to “spell out”, as in depicting which letters to use for the words):
“Being (i.e., acting) fearless isn’t being (i.e., feeling) 100% unafraid, it’s being (i.e., feeling) terrified, but you jump (i.e., act) anyway.”
Perhaps Clinton was right, after all, about the word “is”.
That would be a description of courage. Fearlessness is a state of mind characterized by a lack of fear. It doesn’t matter what is being described by the term “fearless.”
That’s not what the fail is about, the fail is about the quote being credited to the wrong person. Quit trying to be a dictionary.
