This was taken from CNN. The picture was taken by another boater who had been watching the whale playing in the area. There is legitimate coverage of the events.

It is. Actually, I think it happened today or mabye yesterday.
Not real at all!!! If the whale really did crash into the sailboat the boat would no longer be afloat and the wreckage would not be in a neat pile. Also notice in picture one you see land in picture two no land in sight.
1. It’s called a keel.
2. It’s not a neat pile…the mast is broken and the rigging has held it all together.
3. Land would not be in every perspective or they would be in a pond.
4. Whales are not in ponds.

Dude you fail! How is it that there just happen to be someone ready to photograph the event. Also, notice that the captain of the boat isn’t too concern that a whale is about to smoke his boat’s a$$?! Also, if you were to drop 40 tons on a boat, I can bet that unless that boat is made of metal, it’s going to shatter.

some people like to try reeeeeal hard to prove something is fake even when it’s not. their sad little worlds would just crumble if they had learned that crazy shit really does happen.
sailboats for the most part are self righting, they usually only sink if there’s a hull breach. too bad there’s no video, but im sure the whale tipped the boat almost right over on its side. at which point it slid off back into the ocean (limping its tail no doubt). at which point the heavy keel on the bottom of the boat leveled it right out.
im a marine mechanical engineer, trust me
also on the ocean if you just turn around 180′ then you wont be looking at land anymore, no doubt an impact like that would alter the boats trajectory
not to mention, look how calm the water is. do you have a better explanation of how the mast and deck got trashed on a sunny day?

Aside from the comments below, you don’t understand how photography works, 2nd picture being zoomed and therefore occluding detail due to the more narrow depth of field, and also higher apature to let more light in due to the more narrow depth of field creates a more specific focus point.
Asiden from that, what’s to say the photographer isn’t on a boat themselves.

I think this must happen more than people think. A few years ago I was dating a girl who’s mother had been dating a guy who got squished by a whale that jumped onto his 30ft sailboat. Squished him dead.

Yes, it’s real. Yes, the two people on the boat are fine, but only because they got lucky and were standing in the right spot not to get… well, squished. It’s been on the news and confirmed. The local officials are checking into it to make sure they weren’t in some way harassing the whale to cause it to do this to them. However, it sounds like the whale simply didn’t know they were there and breeched on top of them.

I knew a guy who died when a whale breached on his fishing boat. the remains of the boat were found in two big chunks – the whale broke the boat in half. Protip: when whales are about, keep the engine running so that they know you are there. Otherwise they might not notice you and breach on you – bad for everyone involved. The engine won’t scare them away, usually they get really curious and come right up to the boat.
i was near galapagos islands for the whale migration, and a fricking whale, 3 times the size of my boat, pass right under us, had to admit, it looked absolutely amazing, scary yes, but amazing…..

Not fake, and they think the whale is fine. The two people on the boat were in the right spot not to get hurt, themselves.
The news reports that local officials are checking to see if they were too close to the whale, or harassing it in some way. However they did not have their engines running (or didn’t have an engine at all, not sure) so the whale may not have sensed they were there when it breached out of the water.
Never assume people are being stupid (or douche-bags, to use your words), because accidents DO happen.
