  6. Imi says:

How can this possibly be a fail? Those statues were quite normal in the Middle Ages: they were meant as a good laugh back then. There were little statues of people having a dump, copulating and even having oral sex.

  7. Rachel Green says:

  17. Штефан says:

It is indeed the Freiburger Münster (the city is called Freiburg im Breisgau…southern Germany). The story behind the gargoyle is quiet simple: The mason who did all the other gargoyles was payed less by the church then formerly agreed upon. Don’t know why, they probably thought that once he is done he has no other choice but to accept whatever they are going to pay him. There weren’t so many churches around that he could simply go around and sell them to another one. So he decided to get back at them some other way…apparently it worked :) . I doubt that anyone would ever have believed that a few hundred years later people from all over the world would still get a laugh out of it (and if someone did he/she better kept his/her mouth shut…two words: witch hunt). If you ever get the chance to go to Freiburg you should do so. It is a lot like Heidelberg.

  23. Joe says:

Thats in Freiburg, my home town. But the story we were taught goes like this:
The mason was in love with the mayor’s daughter who lived right next to the cathedral but was refused since he was only a poor mason. So he carved the statue and put it right across from her window so she and her family had to stare at the ass the whole time (the old mayors house does have a view of the satue!).

  24. AJ says:

Don’t you guys know anything? This is actually a close-up of the Temple of Goa Tse.

  25. Robin says:

    f**king win

  26. L3viathan says:

    Let me explain this:
This is no fail – it’s a win!
It’s on a german church (in Freiburg). The workers have been paid less then expected from the bishop, so they build this with the ass to the bishop’s house.

    • deflorieren says:

      Let me explain this:

I know its history. I was there in Freiburg, went to school there, I KNOW. I bought this postcard while there. I was going back and forth between fail/win because really, it’s both: win for workers, fail for church.

  41. Michelle says:

This is in Freiburg, Germany. I saw it on my trip in April…the tour guide told us it was pointed at like…a knight? Or someone’s home outside the cathedral. It was something like that person had made the church angry and so that gargoyle ended up there pointed at the person’s house.

  42. CumulonimbusKtty says:

that’s an interesting comment michelle…… ppl dont understand art these days (even if it is obcenely depicted)

Back in the day, they would call that art.

  47. Freiburger says:

That’s actually not a fail. It’s made that way on purpose to offend the guild whose building is facing that “gargoyle” because they didn’t feel like helping to finance the church…
Interesting how many stories about that exist.

  48. Ry says:

    Tubstatue? Fountaingirl?
