It’s in English, people. this is probably on Khao San road or a similar tourist ghetto and is meant as advertising. While there are plenty of ladyboys in thailand, it’s a safe bet that they’d be better serverd with the same notice in thai. Also: 250 for a buffet sounds sort of cheap until you really think about it and realize that’s the same price (around a fiver) a lunchtime thai buffet will cost you in london these days at a cheap place.

The real FAIL is the social pseudo-correctness of the one who thought it was a fail.
A man usually eats more than a woman. A womanish guy or a manish woman eats somewhere in between on. On average these assumptions are true. If you can’t stand reality, then just kill yourself please. Thanks.

As with most assumptions about the gender divide, the fact that it’s usually true doesn’t make it any less discriminatory or any more right. In the US, that would be illegal – it’s REVERSE discrimination against men. (Yes, I know the picture is likely from a restaurant in Thailand – I’m just sayin’.)

Um, really? Because logic would dictate that is exactly what it means. It wouldn’t be any more “wrong” than having separate women’s/men’s basketball leagues.
You say that as if separate basketball leagues are “right”.
You’re missing the point. The fact that something is USUALLY true for a certain group means it’s discrimination to assume that it’s true for EVERY member of that group.
Also, the practice of having gender-separated sports leagues is a relic of older times, and nowadays is being challenged. For instance, many high schools now allow girls to play on boys’ sports teams as a result of complaints about discrimination.

They’re Thai, so I suspect their use of the girl/boy/ladyboy trichotomy is not a result of naive understanding of nonbinary gender definitions. In fact, I’m inclined to suspect naivete is the one of the last things involved.

Yup, there are three genders in Thailand, although ladyboys are ridiculed and seen as very disappointing to be a parent of. Suicides do happen because of it. And of course there are many who don’t fit into those three genders/presumed sexualities – including trans dudes! Butch women & trans guys are seen as too threatening. ‘Toms’ are pretty marginal, but at least they are visible, unlike in many other cultures.
