Chances are, this picture was taken before the drastic detunes of all the hybrid buses. They were well past the black smoke limit, but were extremely quick. After the fuel was pulled lean, they now take off extremely slow, but have very little, if any, black smoke.

Wrong. It’s a Cummins ISL coupled to an Allison HDU. Standard highway diesel is used in these buses.

That being said when the engine is not being run hard the emissions are clear. The biodiesel it runs on produces less CO than gasoline. It does however produce more CO2.

Interestingly enough yes it is cleaner emissions. The heavyweight hydrocarbons that make up the black smoke trap the lighter more harmful carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide molecules.

I actually know the person who took the original. He’s an Air Pollution Inspector that works for the city. It is in no way doctored. That is a hybrid bus that is putting out blackened emissions beyond what they’re regulated to produce by permit. They were issued a violation and fined for it.

In fact, this is an ignorance fail for whoever posted the picture. If you can see exhaust that means that it’s larger carbon particulate matter, which also means it’s not nearly as bad pollution as the smaller stuff. Most diesels will produce this effect.

Basically you’re a moron for thinking a bus using Diesel fuel isn’t green…

The black smoke is coming form the tailpipe for sure. That’s just the nature of diesel. The gray smoke is not from the bus it seems.

It is a fail, that bus is having engine problems, that is a CNG engine bus (compressed natural gas) made by Gillig, all their CNG powered buses have that large white cover over the roof of the bus, the diesels made by Gillig have a flat roof all the way back and on all their 2007 and newer diesels they have a disperser tip on the exhaust that resembles a wide rectangular vent outlet.

Septa’s hybrid buses are diesel-electric. There should NEVER be a plume of black smoke from a properly functioning diesel bus in Philadelphia, hybrid or not.

Yep, that’s a total fail. What does Al Gore say about it?
(The clean-emission buses use hydrogen fuel cells. Only clean vapour emits out and not heavy smoke.)
