Anyway, more on the story. Me and a group of friends were at the museum that this is in, and beside it there was a bear in a canoe(sp?). We all were sitting in the canoe with the bear, then we noticed the sign. We didn’t feel comfortable with the bear anymore.
I’ve been there hundreds of times! It’s at the Explore Manitoba museum in Winnipeg, Canada. Last time I was there, though, they got rid of the bear. The lullaby always freaked me out :O

Well, a typical threatening lullaby, a lot of lullabies are like this. They tell kids that they’ll fall to their death, that their parents died in war or that they’ll be pinned to the cradle with needles.

I dunno, I kind of like that most lullabies and nursery rhymes are terrifying. It kind of jades your kids to scary things a little, if they get it, and if they don’t, it gives them something to go “Hey, waitaminute” about when they’re older.

I asked my wife, who speaks the language. She said it’s ALMOST right, but the bit about the bear being naked is a screwed up translation. It says ‘a bear might eat you’, as gemaa isn’t naked but rather is equivalent to ‘maybe’, denoting something that might happen.
Literal translation:

I speak and teach Ojibwe, and the translation of this is wrong. “Gemaa” means “or/maybe/perhaps” and “makwa” means “bear.” The song is Hey little baby sleep; don’t cry; perhaps a bear will eat you.

I think the lullaby used to make sense when the Ojibwe people lived in the wilderness. A crying baby could attract a hungry bear. I don’t think I would sing that song to my baby even in that situation, but it can’t be any worse than Rock A Bye Baby when the bough breaks and the baby and cradle go crashing down. I always substitute the last line with “and I will catch baby, cradle and all.”
