CD will most likely run perfectly fine anyway. Given the Case it is in I suspect it is a relatively cheap product and the software will not take up the entire CD, so there would most likely be no software on that part of the CD.

You are absolutely correct – little data = OK, more data = KO. But the CD is imbalanced, which is not good for the drive’s mechanism. So in a way, it is a fail.

It’s true, this CD could work, any unused storage space on a CD translates to a useless plastic rim around the edge that you can do whatever you want with. Evidence? Those mini CDs that are about 1/2 the diameter of a regular CD, I’m sure you’ve all seen them somewhere…

This CD isn’t technically a fail, it’s just retarded-looking.

You’re all failures.

First, it’s not fake. I’ve seen similar things before, mainly as driver discs for cheap-ass hardware.

Second, it’s not cardboard. You can very clearly see the reflection off the plastic and the grain of the wood below it.

Third — and this is the kicker — THIS CD WILL STILL WORK. CDs are read from the inside-out; that is, from the hub towards the edge. Since this disc is clearly some kind of driver, there’s very little data on it. Based on the position of the hole there’s easily enough physical space for about 100MB of data before the drive encounters that hole. No driver takes up that much space so, yeah, this CD will work.

TIP: When you post a fail, MAKE SURE IT’S A FAIL.

CDs need to be fairly well balanced due to the speeds at which modern CD-ROM drives run, else horrid things can (and DO) happen.

When you burn 1s and 0s into a CD, you’re actually making an indentation in the plastic layer of the cd. The reader shines a laser through the plastic layer which reflects against the foil layer and for every so many microns there is a different angle of refraction due to an indentation, a corresponding number of 1s or 0s is read. However, during the burning process, it can be assumed that the plastic layer is thinner where the “bumps” are either due to redistribution of carbon molecules, or their full fledged oxidation (burning off). The result is a “lightening” of the bump area. Causing an almost infinitesimal unbalance in the disc itself.

Unlike a vinyl record, CDs are written from the inside toward the outside. If the amount of data on the CD isn’t too much, it still might be perfectly usable.

I’d try it out first in a CD-ROM drive you don’t care about. That hole might throw it out of balance to the point where it wobbles around and comes off the spindle, trashing both the disc and the drive it’s in.

You dorks. It’s a photochop.
a) There is no way to manufacture a CD that way.
b) You would spend a lot of Rupees getting the packaging folks to line up the holes properly rather than just dropping in the disk.
c) nothing stopping the disk from rotating in shipment and voiding all the hard work of your assembly folks.
d) the extra hole is not center of the envelope, or the disk, thereby eliminating the possibility that machines created this monstrosity
e) there is no way to do this without machines
f) therefore, the comments are the only fail.

Part of the CD spec is very good tolerance of and compensation for rotational imbalances. Rubber mounted spindles and things like that, because CDs can be quite badly balanced anyway just from manufacturing flaws – most CDs aren’t actually properly round, and it’s a lot cheaper to make the drives compensate than to produce trillions of perfectly round CDs. A 52x CD drive can be doing 25,000 RPM, and at those kinds of speeds having too many 1s or 0s in one section would be enough to unbalance it. Like me. I only meant to post the first line, and some weirdo wrote the rest. I don’t know him.
