The American English word “kill” meaning channel, stream, &c, comes from a Dutch word “kil”, meaning channel. I don’t know whether British English has picked-up this word.

Well, actually in the Netherlands they call river’s : “rivier” and a stream is: “een stroom”. I live in the Netherlands, so I know… but I don’t know where the word “kill” comes from.

Good point. The Dutch word for (I think) river or stream is “kill”. So in the east coast of the US there are a lot of place names with the word “kill” in them.

For the record, this is a real street name. It’s in England, mid way between Thetford and Norwich. If you use Multimap and type the name in, you’ll find it. Not so much a street as a country lane with very few buildings along it. I’d love to know the etymology.
