» 275 Failures in Communication

  1. cheplu says:

    well, i have another “f” in mind…

  2. R says:

    “Firing”!

  3. schumischumi says:

    for-mating?

  4. PalqkA says:

    The same idea here …

  5. mookie says:

    M is for mucking.

  6. FAILOR says:

    fu<king?

  7. James says:

    Submitter = SUBTLETY FAIL.

  8. FAILOR says:

    fisting?

  9. Nasa says:

Hmm, I can think of another f to replace mating…
And its not “fail,” though that textbook reeks of it.

  10. MuffinMan says:

That isn’t a fail, it’s deliberate humour. However, this FAILBlog entry *is* a fail.

  11. Kilimanjaro says:

Obviously the last F should be ‘failing’, a major part of our biological drive to survival. Live’s a trial and error experience ;)

  12. Tiernan says:

It’s actually an excellent joke, so… FAIL to whoever deemed this a FAIL.

  13. granny says:

fighting, feeding, fleeing and fungal infection :(

  14. granny says:

I think there is a problem with my puppy’s hypothalamus :(

  15. der Rudi says:

I do believe that its intentional, so its an epic writer win.

  16. 5 eagles says:

“fmating” is what it should of been printed.

  17. Oscar says:

    Synonym win.

  18. chunli says:

    Falling in love

  19. Martin says:

That isn’t a fail, it’s deliberate humour. However, this FAILBlog entry *is* a fail.

    • 5 eagles says:

      No its not ..

      • Ayeka678 says:

Whoever was the neurobiologist that wrote this textbook and snuck this in, I wish I had had him/her in college.

Personally, I would say this is an editor/peer review fail for not catching it for a “professional” textbook. I would say the the neurobiologist sense of humor is full of win and is incredibly snarky.

        • Ducky says:

Many “professional” textbooks contain humor. It helps reinforce ideas. You will never forget the four f’s now, and you don’t even take endocrinology.

    • BluePrint says:

It’s most definitely a fail, the correct four F’s are:
      Fighting, Fleeing, Feeding and… Reproduction.

      • 5 eagles says:

No no its most definitely a fail, the correct four F’s are:
        Fighting, Fleeing, Feeding and… fmating.

        • Black Garnets, lvl 60 burglar hobbit, fanged werebunny. says:

No it’s: Fighting, Fleeing, Feeding and… Leg humping.

          • CantThinkOfANameToday says:

Nah, according to the Encyclopedia Britannica, they are Fighting, Fleeing, Feeding and… Bees on a Bird Action?!

That's it... From now on, I'm sticking to Discovery Channel
or Fox Kids for reliable info...
  20. daniel says:

im starting to think failblog is dumb. these failblog fails happen A LOT

  21. JaredW says:

Yeah, this is completely deliberate. They can’t put fu<king in a high school biology book, so they used subtle humor.

  22. residue says:

Actually, this is from a humor-laden book about the impact stress has on our immune system. The book is “Why Zebras don’t get ulcers” by Robert Sapolsky.

It’s obviously deliberate humor, especially once you know the source

  23. Gui says:

Now, that’s a win in my book!!
Way to hide your true colors, author… lol

  24. Ace5762 says:

    fighting, fleeing, feeding and fornicating?

  25. Ch says:

Actually this is a really old neuroscience joke about the limbic system. John P.J. Pinel also uses it in his book “Basics of Biopsychology” but there the last F stands for “sexual behaviour”. He also points out that even though it’s a joke as old as biopsychology itself, it’s still a good one. And I agree with him. =D

  26. JeniDiver says:

    *Big Smile* I liked it.

  27. Tiffany says:

    Not really a fail. Mating = f**king (the 4th F) worded differently.

  28. Dr. John says:

WIN! Not fail. This is an old neurobiology joke always used in teaching.

  29. Spotjam says:

Looks more a WIN! to me too.

  30. CantThinkOfANameToday says:

    The list is incomplete.
The wise men of old knew, that there were five F’s.
And now, through deciphered Maya texts which mostly can be interpreted to describe an ancient, originating from Atlantis, prediction of Nostradamus’ foretelling abilities, the fifth “F” is known to the world, just a few years before it shall manifest itself – in 2012.
    It is, of course,
    “Fail”.

  31. Can’t … understand… to much.. information.. at once..

  32. benny says:

the thing is thats what all physiology textbooks say– they just assume you can figure out what the fourth F is on your own, cause they’re not allowed to

  33. Black Garnets, lvl 60 burglar hobbit, fanged werebunny. says:

♫I know how to loose holiday weight♫

  34. cptno says:

    Fighting, Fleeing, Feeding and FAIL

  35. Me says:

This was in a biological psychology textbook from a class I took in 1984, so it’s been around a while.

  36. Demut says:

    Your comment is awaiting moderation.

    Gay.

    • Shadow © says:

Well, I suppose it could be… insofar as an automatic user-triggered action of a website can have a sexual orientation.

      • Black Garnets, lvl 60 burglar hobbit, fanged werebunny. says:

Is there something wrong with the automatic user-triggered action of a website’s sexual orientation? Demut, we are a tolerant group.

        • Demut says:

Huh? Why are both of you implying that said “Gay.” is referring to the automatic user-triggered action telling one that one’s comment awaits moderation?

And of course this “Gay.” isn’t supposed to mean “homosexual” but rather “happy” or “joyful”. Sheesh, I guess I should keep up with today’s English. Isn’t anyone using that meaning of the word “gay” anymore?

  37. Shadow © says:

Hahaha! What a fail! “And” doesn’t begin with ‘f’!

  38. Adz says:

This is totally lame. I can tell you right now that this was taken from a psychology text book and is an inside joke for psychologists. Ask even your Psych 101 prof. I like failblog but they totally missed the mark here. Way to butcher it guys.

  39. risu says:

    fertilizing?

  40. natnat says:

Col. David Grossman talks about this in his “A Bulletproof Mind” lecture. Its about guns and society.

  41. aisthebomb says:

Ha, this is in my Psych. book. Still makes me laugh. I think the other “F” is really for flucking.

  42. StainedSword says:

If you ask me, this is a win. It’s a textbook that implies the F word!! What’s not to love?

  43. Gingerwood says:

This is not a fail. The meaning is implied, the sort of dry joke a professor would make in class. Who says that intellectuals don’t have a sense of humor?

  44. ohheywhatsup says:

    Its F U C K I N G!

  45. Chesternut says:

This was a post on MLIA :p ahaha

  46. Leah says:

omg, I have that text book. I laughed out loud at that obvious mistake thinking it was completely intentional… because I know an f word synonymous with mating ;P

This is a win, not a fail

  47. anon says:

its a win. ‘mating’ is really for fking

  48. iniminimininima says:

this is a very old psychology joke that every psychology professor always makes and thinks its totally hilarious

  49. bartoron says:

I’ve always learned that the role of the hypothalamus is to regulate hunger, thirst, and sex drive.

Why must this inferior textbook try to create a ridiculous mnemonic?! >:O

  50. Tony Bullard says:

God forbid a textbook have some humor in it.

    • CantThinkOfANameToday says:

As it has been written: “Beware the One(s) who put jokes in the textbooks, for they are the sign of the (put favorite evil here)”

  51. UknownXD says:

I think they meant the other word with that starts with F and means the same thing as mating!

  52. Hamam says:

C’mon, I wish my textbooks were like this. So go mate yourselves.

  53. jupiter5 says:

In their defense, the F for mating shouldn’t be used in a textbook.

  54. Heather says:

I have this in my textbook this year. I loved it – it helped me remember the role of the hypothalamus. So I think it’s a win for helping students remember neuroscience.

  55. poodledoodle says:

The person who fails is actually the one who proclaimed this as a fail. The author of that essay is actually right.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Fs_%28evolution%29

yes I know wiki isnt the best source but what ever it still proves my point

  56. pierre says:

It’s not a fail at all; i’ve seen that plenty of times in similar settings.

  57. Mich says:

yeah you know this is what they teach…it’s supposed to be like that

  58. Dulba says:

It is four F’s the last one is fuxing

  59. cherish says:

    Proofreading replaces bad words.

  60. Joe says:

not a fail. this was intentional and used quite often in evolutionary biology. students usually get a laugh out of this when it’s brought up in class.

  61. savitrii says:

    I TOTALLY HAD THIS BOOK!!!

  62. RoyBatty says:

You have to wonder if the author originally wrote “fornication” and TPTB decided that even that was too risque.

  63. Karen says:

The four F’s were mentioned in one of my lectures before. Nice memory cue.

  64. Syhn says:

Obviously it’s F***ing. Wouldn’t be so bad if it was in a community college textbook.

  65. idiots says:

The last one is F-cking retards. If you took psychology, you would realize they aren’t going to publish that in a student textbook. If anything, this picture should get a fail for the kid who posted it not paying attention in class.

  66. Didi says:

    Fighting, fleeing, feeding and FAIL

  67. Daniel says:

    Fighting, fleeing, feeding, and f***ing!

  68. Euralynx says:

    Should we be concerned? o:

  69. thesadinme says:

I teach out of that text book. and yes it is really that bad. It is actually amazing sometimes how slow students are to get that.

  70. greenlight says:

Yeah, seriously, guys, the “four fs” is essentially a joke BECAUSE the last would be inappropriate to print. You will find that exact same sentence in tons of psych and neuroscience literature.
Labeling this as a “fail” just makes me think you are a n00b. Good job.

  71. Lindsay says:

I don’t see any fail, it’s clearly a deliberate joke to keep students engaged.

  72. Matt says:

The worst part is that “Fs” has no apostrophe in it… This is a piece of educational literature and there’s a spelling mistake in it.

  73. Kara says:

    It’s a joke, not a fail. mating = f*cking.

  74. wag says:

    Understanding science humor fail.

  75. mroob says:

why why why why why is failblog unable to understand the difference between fail and win

stop allowing 2 year olds as mods, guys

  76. Koriina says:

I liked the way my old textbook put it–”The four “f”s: Fighting, Fleeing, Feeding, and Fu . . . reproductive activities”

  77. Evan says:

This is from a psychology textbook. When my prof was giving a lecture on this he said “fighting, fleeing, feeding, and… well you guys get the picture.” I think it stands for fornicating!

  78. cmb says:

that’s not a typo, that’s actually what the bio teachers say in class since they’re not allowed to cuss

  79. cb says:

Is that’s from Blumenfeld’s neuroanatomy or high yield neuro? I feel like I’ve read it before.

  80. Volaway says:

total win! i still remember it from high school – therefore it is a good mnemonic

  81. klutzo says:

    I’ll take ‘Fellatio’.

  82. SparcMan says:

What a strange typo. It should have been “Facebooking”

  83. Andriffic says:

    Good luck returning that book

  84. James says:

That’s not a fail. That’s a bad joke on the part of the writer.

  85. mike s. says:

Fail fail. This is an old joke. I heard it in high school, which was more than ten years go for me now. To spell it out, since somebody didn’t get it: the fourth f is f**king. Get it?

  86. Brendan Richards says:

Seems like a Political Correctness WIN in this case :/

  87. Urr.4 says:

Actually, I think this is an Assumption-Win ^^

  88. Andrew Ong says:

It would be ‘feasting’ or ‘flawing’.

  89. appleve says:

they didn’t have the guts to write “f*cking” in a textbook is all.

  90. anna says:

This is NOT A FAIL, dumb-butts. They have been teaching this in psychology forever…they are not going to print F***ing in a text book. This is entirely intentional.

  91. fdf says:

Retards, if you knew a thing or two about biology you would know its not a typo but a joke, the fourth f ‘mating’ obviously means f—ing

  92. Tray Dawg says:

LOL I remember this book! I used it in one of my classes in college! I saw that line and I found it to be a Humor Win. So whoever thought this was a fail clearly cannot take a joke :)

  93. William says:

LOL! Carlson’s Physiology of Behavior FTW!!!

  94. Jimmy says:

I have this book…it’s actually pretty good.
It’s called “Brain Rules” by John Medina

  95. Bucket says:

I knew my psyche teacher didn’t make that up

  96. Timothy, the regular! says:

IT MUST BE CALLED 3 Fs and 1 M.

Because censorship is enforced. I couldn’t “f**k” myself unto that!

  97. Vik says:

    oh, mate me.

  98. LitCandle says:

This is out of my psychology book! Also, they have a part about running over an overly happy jogger in a track suit that bounces when he waits for the crosswalk. It is by far one of my favorite text books

  99. BrownBaby2012 says:

LOL… this was in my Neuro textbook too!

  100. Jawwad Riaz says:

    I think that’s a win .. cuz we all know what’s the fourth “F”.

  101. robert ot says:

“I will tear your endocrine system out”
    -gary busey

  102. Tim says:

    How about “Failing?”

Fornicating seems to be the best substitute here, however…=)

  103. Max says:

I remember this from my psych classes. This is probably the nerdiest joke I’ve ever heard.

  104. D says:

i learned “fighting, feeding, copulation and fleeing” i loved my osyche profs.

  105. Steve says:

Actually, for all you people saying it should be Fu*****, they could have used fornicating.

  106. Brendan says:

    …win.

  107. melini says:

…No fail, this is actually what is taught. Easy way to remember it.

  108. Haley says:

hahaha failblog FAIL. As many have pointed out, this is a very well-known joke in academia… but you ignorant notgiveashitters wouldn’t know! lulz

  109. Mom of Three says:

This is what happens when Creationists get a hold of textbooks.

  110. Insecthero says:

Yep, old joke. My textbook had it as “Reproductive Behavior.”

  111. XXDD says:

That’s from Pinel’s “Biopsychology”, if I’m not mistaken. Total win, in my opinion, just like Pinel’s whole existence.

  112. Annooonym says:

Actually, its suppose to be a psychology joke, mating is obviously to replace the workd f***ing, so it’s a win for psychology textbooks. Fail for whoever thought it was a fail.

  113. Maggots says:

Actually we learned that same thing in my Physiology class…It’s a good way to remember the four f’s :)

  114. So True says:

It’s not a joke. I seriously had this textbook and our teacher even laughed.

  115. BigMKnow says:

This is a Failblog fail, because that’s an old and classic joke about the hypothalamus. Everybody knows what the fourth F is supposed to be.

  116. Serris says:

How is this a fail? This is a win!

  117. psych101 says:

its an old psych joke, its not even a FAIL

  118. Really now says:

I’d say ‘fornicating’. This tactic is used in The Illusionist in order not to say the F word and get the movie out of general viewers’

  119. Deport says:

This isn’t a fail at all!
This is a really well thought out joke that Failblog did not get.

    Failblog fail.

  120. Ashlea says:

That is actually in my psychology textbook. It pretty much goes with the rest of the book.

  121. Jaems says:

This is more like a WIN, right??

  122. MJ says:

    failblogfail.

  123. StoneRoc says:

Swing and a rare miss Failblog.

  124. Blackwulff says:

My best friend has this book. >.> >.< *sighs* I remember her talking to me about it last semester.

  125. Rohith says:

    Fisting!!! :D

  126. Regrubezeehc says:

I’d probably like this even if it was a WIN, but FAILs are always funnier.

  127. naw ai dink il like dis way…
infuct, ai tink im goeng tu bi deh onli kitteh in failbug …..
