IT HAS been said in previous responses, but anyone who has taken a Psych unit (or similar course) would have covered this. The Lecturers use it as an inhouse joke. Funny the first time you come across it.
Agreed. This is a well known joke in Psychology, not a fail. I bet if I scroll down I will see some tards going “IT’S F***ING LOLOLOL STUPID IDIOTS PUT MATING.” This quote is actually from my old Intro Psych textbook Psychology: Themes and Variations. It is certainly an effective way to remember the functions of the hypothalamus.
Yep it’s in my bio-psychology book too… Too bad that doesn’t work in German.
But still, it’s used as an insider joke; so you get to know the psychologists’ humor by that one…
Every scientist in my 500 person first year psych class got the joke immediately, since with the four F’s, the fourth F being “making love” had to be something interesting. Textbook innuendo win, scientist student win, rest of human race, including – and it pains me to say it – failblog, fail.
In the words of Bill Murray: BACK OFF MAN, I’M A SCIENTIST!
Oh, previous comment of mine, what dastardly words must thou had in thee to be gone from the F-words run for now, what cruel fate has condemned thee from appearing where thee should've appeared...
I used to write computer manuals. We were warned never to include any jokes because a few tight-arsed customers had no sense of humour and would complain.
OH for god’s sake, fornication isn’t funny. Having a civilized university prof in a polite setting say “FUKKING” in front of 500 students without saying it is damned funny. God everyone is murdering this joke, and it’s a great joke. Failblog brought me down today
Whoever was the neurobiologist that wrote this textbook and snuck this in, I wish I had had him/her in college.
Personally, I would say this is an editor/peer review fail for not catching it for a “professional” textbook. I would say the the neurobiologist sense of humor is full of win and is incredibly snarky.
Actually, this is from a humor-laden book about the impact stress has on our immune system. The book is “Why Zebras don’t get ulcers” by Robert Sapolsky.
It’s obviously deliberate humor, especially once you know the source
It’s not a textbook in the sense that it wasn’t written to be a textbook, is not from a textbook company and is not marketed to professors. Sapolsky wrote it for a general audience. But it’s such a good book that a lot of psych and bio profs assign it just cause they like it.
Actually this is a really old neuroscience joke about the limbic system. John P.J. Pinel also uses it in his book “Basics of Biopsychology” but there the last F stands for “sexual behaviour”. He also points out that even though it’s a joke as old as biopsychology itself, it’s still a good one. And I agree with him. =D
The list is incomplete.
The wise men of old knew, that there were five F’s.
And now, through deciphered Maya texts which mostly can be interpreted to describe an ancient, originating from Atlantis, prediction of Nostradamus’ foretelling abilities, the fifth “F” is known to the world, just a few years before it shall manifest itself – in 2012.
It is, of course, “Fail”.
the thing is thats what all physiology textbooks say– they just assume you can figure out what the fourth F is on your own, cause they’re not allowed to
Huh? Why are both of you implying that said “Gay.” is referring to the automatic user-triggered action telling one that one’s comment awaits moderation?
And of course this “Gay.” isn’t supposed to mean “homosexual” but rather “happy” or “joyful”. Sheesh, I guess I should keep up with today’s English. Isn’t anyone using that meaning of the word “gay” anymore?
This is totally lame. I can tell you right now that this was taken from a psychology text book and is an inside joke for psychologists. Ask even your Psych 101 prof. I like failblog but they totally missed the mark here. Way to butcher it guys.
This is not a fail. The meaning is implied, the sort of dry joke a professor would make in class. Who says that intellectuals don’t have a sense of humor?
omg, I have that text book. I laughed out loud at that obvious mistake thinking it was completely intentional… because I know an f word synonymous with mating ;P
I have this in my textbook this year. I loved it – it helped me remember the role of the hypothalamus. So I think it’s a win for helping students remember neuroscience.
The last one is F-cking retards. If you took psychology, you would realize they aren’t going to publish that in a student textbook. If anything, this picture should get a fail for the kid who posted it not paying attention in class.
Yeah, seriously, guys, the “four fs” is essentially a joke BECAUSE the last would be inappropriate to print. You will find that exact same sentence in tons of psych and neuroscience literature.
Labeling this as a “fail” just makes me think you are a n00b. Good job.
Actually, this is the one case where it is acceptable to put an apostrophe in a plural, although putting quotation marks around the “F” would have avoided the need for a clarifying apostrophe.
This is from a psychology textbook. When my prof was giving a lecture on this he said “fighting, fleeing, feeding, and… well you guys get the picture.” I think it stands for fornicating!
Fail fail. This is an old joke. I heard it in high school, which was more than ten years go for me now. To spell it out, since somebody didn’t get it: the fourth f is f**king. Get it?
This is NOT A FAIL, dumb-butts. They have been teaching this in psychology forever…they are not going to print F***ing in a text book. This is entirely intentional.
LOL I remember this book! I used it in one of my classes in college! I saw that line and I found it to be a Humor Win. So whoever thought this was a fail clearly cannot take a joke
This is out of my psychology book! Also, they have a part about running over an overly happy jogger in a track suit that bounces when he waits for the crosswalk. It is by far one of my favorite text books
Actually, its suppose to be a psychology joke, mating is obviously to replace the workd f***ing, so it’s a win for psychology textbooks. Fail for whoever thought it was a fail.
well, i have another “f” in mind…
But at least you didn’t say it.
“Fating”?!? Or maybe they’re refering to the M-word…
Fornication Under Consent of King-ing
FDAU-ing?
Faughing?
I think he was meaning “first”
oh shi….
*whack* AIEEEEE *slash* ARRRRRGH
FAKE
IT HAS been said in previous responses, but anyone who has taken a Psych unit (or similar course) would have covered this. The Lecturers use it as an inhouse joke. Funny the first time you come across it.
no fail its just a j0ke
Not fail, just a joke that failblog didn’t get. They’re off their usual amazing game on this one.
And I fizz in my pant
Yep it’s in my bio-psychology book too… Too bad that doesn’t work in German.
But still, it’s used as an insider joke; so you get to know the psychologists’ humor by that one…
Fraternization?
Farting?
*holds nose*
Fertilizing?
Flipping?
Family-making!
Close. Very, very close.
today they dont call it f*ing, its frusteration
*Gives cheply a big prize for not saying first*
NAME FAIL! It’s “cheplu”
Can you give me a prize?
fuuuuuudge
That’s not a fail. That’s science humor… which may actually be the same as a fail
F*ING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i call that a win in my book
Me too! Absolute win!
Failblog failed. Once again.
One of my med text books says the same phrase, except they use “reproduction” instead of “mating”.
That is from the Carlson “Physiology” textbook used in Physiological Psychology version 7. I have this same textbook.
farting?
it was clearly ‘fisting’
that is actually how they teach it. its a ‘joke’ and yes you are suppose to replace mating with another ‘F’
“Firing”!
^The main cannon.
At will
for-mating?
oh damn it.
wanted to reply to cheplu
What? Reformatting?
But my DATA! My precious data…
The same idea here …
M is for mucking.
*fornicates*
*fasturbates mrantically*
you’re such a morantic
Yes, I´m often in the food.
how about some angry duck?
You hurt my feelings. How about a make-up muck?
Fother mucking?
farting?
stop copying me
fu<king?
fusam
mwahahahahaahahah
Dork!
NAME FAIL!! It’s “cheplu”
So when is someone in this list just gonna say “FISTING” out loud?
Submitter = SUBTLETY FAIL.
This.
indeed.
fisting?
felching?
frottaging?
frothing?
frosty trombone?
Flange?
Flankerdoodle?
Falafelgating?
Farfrompoopin’?
figging.
Fingering?
I will have you know i am good at ALL of those things!
Fleece hunting?
Freezer usage?
foreplay?
Again, I excel at all of those things
Never heard of it
Fotoshopping?
Hmm, I can think of another f to replace mating…
And its not “fail,” though that textbook reeks of it.
“Finding a mate”? Or fathering a child, in some cases.
That isn’t a fail, it’s deliberate humour. However, this FAILBlog entry *is* a fail.
Agreed.
Double agreed.
#3
I’m confusiled. Is MuffinMan referring to the fail or his comment on the fail as being a fail?
Obviously the last F should be ‘failing’, a major part of our biological drive to survival. Live’s a trial and error experience
Darn! Beat me to it!
It’s actually an excellent joke, so… FAIL to whoever deemed this a FAIL.
Actually the author could have gone with “fornication” if they insisted on using all “F”. Or said “3Fs and an M”.
It’s a longstanding joke in the neuroscience field and is usually preceded by an “a-hem”. “Fornication” would completely destroy the punchline
long standing joke aside, it doesn’t really belong in a textbook.
A-hem, yes it does
Something similar existed in my psych books. But we practically ran around screaming f@ck ’cause we would. We were academically allowed.
*could
I used to write computer manuals. We were warned never to include any jokes because a few tight-arsed customers had no sense of humour and would complain.
Yeah to my knowledge the last “f” is kind of the point. It’s in a lot of related textbooks… Wasn’t a fail. Whoever posted this is just a dumbass.
i always start a speech with a joke – something like this
Fornication. Fornication like this it is usual to start with a joke or some witty story…
Fornication means having sex outside of marriage. It woud not work it. I agree with the others; this is a deliberate joke and not a fail at all.
3 Females and a Male?
Beat me to that one =(
Or the book could have said “a less polite term that can mean ‘mating’”. The polite term that begins with an “f” is, I believe “fornicating’.
OH for god’s sake, fornication isn’t funny. Having a civilized university prof in a polite setting say “FUKKING” in front of 500 students without saying it is damned funny. God everyone is murdering this joke, and it’s a great joke. Failblog brought me down today
And an idiot.
Agreed.😊
failing?
Fapping
fighting, feeding, fleeing and fungal infection
Ewww, they have a short for that.
*shot
WTM?
hahaha
Oh MMS!
G’day mate!
RTMM? There is a manual for that?!
I think there is a problem with my puppy’s hypothalamus
He has flees?
No, he wud have fleed but was too busy mating.
I do believe that its intentional, so its an epic writer win.
Of course it is; one wonders what’s wrong with failblog’s sarcasm meter.
Exactly.
“fmating” is what it should of been printed.
Synonym win.
fornicating
Falling in love
That isn’t a fail, it’s deliberate humour. However, this FAILBlog entry *is* a fail.
No its not ..
Many “professional” textbooks contain humor. It helps reinforce ideas. You will never forget the four f’s now, and you don’t even take endocrinology.
It’s most definitely a fail, the correct four F’s are:
Fighting, Fleeing, Feeding and… Reproduction.
No no its most definitely a fail, the correct four F’s are:
Fighting, Fleeing, Feeding and… fmating.
No it’s: Fighting, Fleeing, Feeding and… Leg humping.
Nah, according to the Encyclopedia Britannica, they are Fighting, Fleeing, Feeding and… Bees on a Bird Action?!
im starting to think failblog is dumb. these failblog fails happen A LOT
I think you’ll find it’s the people making the fails who are dumb.
Just sayin’
You mean Failblog just posts what we the people submit? Food for thought…
Mate for thought.
a failblog fail is when its not a fail. as is the case on this fail. its a joke, and failblog doesnt get it. BTW you’re SUPER HOT
Yeah, this is completely deliberate. They can’t put fu<king in a high school biology book, so they used subtle humor.
Actually, this is from a humor-laden book about the impact stress has on our immune system. The book is “Why Zebras don’t get ulcers” by Robert Sapolsky.
It’s obviously deliberate humor, especially once you know the source
and it’s not a textbook
Its a textbook fail.
Arnie says: IZ NAHT A TEXTBOOK
It *is* a textbook. It was assigned for my General Psychology class in college.
It’s not a textbook in the sense that it wasn’t written to be a textbook, is not from a textbook company and is not marketed to professors. Sapolsky wrote it for a general audience. But it’s such a good book that a lot of psych and bio profs assign it just cause they like it.
Now, that’s a win in my book!!
Way to hide your true colors, author… lol
fighting, fleeing, feeding and fornicating?
Fighting, Fleeing, Feeding and Flailing?
Actually this is a really old neuroscience joke about the limbic system. John P.J. Pinel also uses it in his book “Basics of Biopsychology” but there the last F stands for “sexual behaviour”. He also points out that even though it’s a joke as old as biopsychology itself, it’s still a good one. And I agree with him. =D
Can’t … understand… to much.. information.. at once..
Just let your head explode.
Ill do it for him.
*Blows hiiiiiiiiii’s head off*
*Big Smile* I liked it.
Not really a fail. Mating = f**king (the 4th F) worded differently.
WIN! Not fail. This is an old neurobiology joke always used in teaching.
Looks more a WIN! to me too.
It is, of course,
“Fail”.
Err… apocalypse win?
Can’t … understand… to much.. information.. at once..
the thing is thats what all physiology textbooks say– they just assume you can figure out what the fourth F is on your own, cause they’re not allowed to
♫I know how to loose holiday weight♫
Fighting, Fleeing, Feeding and FAIL
This was in a biological psychology textbook from a class I took in 1984, so it’s been around a while.
Your comment is awaiting moderation.
Gay.
Well, I suppose it could be… insofar as an automatic user-triggered action of a website can have a sexual orientation.
Is there something wrong with the automatic user-triggered action of a website’s sexual orientation? Demut, we are a tolerant group.
Isn’t anyone using that meaning of the word “gay” anymore?
only The Flintstones and small children trying to be clever…
ididnotmeantoimlpythatyouareasmallchild.
Oraflintstone.
I am both, actually. Do you remember Pebbles?
Hahaha! What a fail! “And” doesn’t begin with ‘f’!
This is totally lame. I can tell you right now that this was taken from a psychology text book and is an inside joke for psychologists. Ask even your Psych 101 prof. I like failblog but they totally missed the mark here. Way to butcher it guys.
Read the coments before posting you idiot.
Watch out it is the Nerd Police. You disrupted his life cuz this is all he has to be cool.
Nerds are cool. It’s not our fault you’re too stupid to see it.
Amen, brother!
Looks like you have an admirer!
fertilizing?
The eggs, yes!
Col. David Grossman talks about this in his “A Bulletproof Mind” lecture. Its about guns and society.
Ha, this is in my Psych. book. Still makes me laugh. I think the other “F” is really for flucking.
Frotting, if you were in my class.
If you ask me, this is a win. It’s a textbook that implies the F word!! What’s not to love?
This is not a fail. The meaning is implied, the sort of dry joke a professor would make in class. Who says that intellectuals don’t have a sense of humor?
Its F U C K I N G!
This was a post on MLIA :p ahaha
WIN!
omg, I have that text book. I laughed out loud at that obvious mistake thinking it was completely intentional… because I know an f word synonymous with mating ;P
This is a win, not a fail
its a win. ‘mating’ is really for fking
this is a very old psychology joke that every psychology professor always makes and thinks its totally hilarious
I’ve always learned that the role of the hypothalamus is to regulate hunger, thirst, and sex drive.
Why must this inferior textbook try to create a ridiculous mnemonic?! >:O
God forbid a textbook have some humor in it.
As it has been written: “Beware the One(s) who put jokes in the textbooks, for they are the sign of the (put favorite evil here)”
I think they meant the other word with that starts with F and means the same thing as mating!
C’mon, I wish my textbooks were like this. So go mate yourselves.
In their defense, the F for mating shouldn’t be used in a textbook.
I have this in my textbook this year. I loved it – it helped me remember the role of the hypothalamus. So I think it’s a win for helping students remember neuroscience.
The person who fails is actually the one who proclaimed this as a fail. The author of that essay is actually right.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Fs_%28evolution%29
yes I know wiki isnt the best source but what ever it still proves my point
It’s not a fail at all; i’ve seen that plenty of times in similar settings.
yeah you know this is what they teach…it’s supposed to be like that
It is four F’s the last one is fuxing
Proofreading replaces bad words.
not a fail. this was intentional and used quite often in evolutionary biology. students usually get a laugh out of this when it’s brought up in class.
I TOTALLY HAD THIS BOOK!!!
You have to wonder if the author originally wrote “fornication” and TPTB decided that even that was too risque.
The four F’s were mentioned in one of my lectures before. Nice memory cue.
Obviously it’s F***ing. Wouldn’t be so bad if it was in a community college textbook.
The last one is F-cking retards. If you took psychology, you would realize they aren’t going to publish that in a student textbook. If anything, this picture should get a fail for the kid who posted it not paying attention in class.
Fighting, fleeing, feeding and FAIL
Fighting, fleeing, feeding, and f***ing!
Should we be concerned? o:
I teach out of that text book. and yes it is really that bad. It is actually amazing sometimes how slow students are to get that.
Yeah, seriously, guys, the “four fs” is essentially a joke BECAUSE the last would be inappropriate to print. You will find that exact same sentence in tons of psych and neuroscience literature.
Labeling this as a “fail” just makes me think you are a n00b. Good job.
I don’t see any fail, it’s clearly a deliberate joke to keep students engaged.
The worst part is that “Fs” has no apostrophe in it… This is a piece of educational literature and there’s a spelling mistake in it.
Bukkit, educational literature?
Actually, this is the one case where it is acceptable to put an apostrophe in a plural, although putting quotation marks around the “F” would have avoided the need for a clarifying apostrophe.
It’s a joke, not a fail. mating = f*cking.
Understanding science humor fail.
why why why why why is failblog unable to understand the difference between fail and win
stop allowing 2 year olds as mods, guys
Ba-dum tish!
I liked the way my old textbook put it–”The four “f”s: Fighting, Fleeing, Feeding, and Fu . . . reproductive activities”
This is from a psychology textbook. When my prof was giving a lecture on this he said “fighting, fleeing, feeding, and… well you guys get the picture.” I think it stands for fornicating!
that’s not a typo, that’s actually what the bio teachers say in class since they’re not allowed to cuss
Is that’s from Blumenfeld’s neuroanatomy or high yield neuro? I feel like I’ve read it before.
total win! i still remember it from high school – therefore it is a good mnemonic
I’ll take ‘Fellatio’.
What a strange typo. It should have been “Facebooking”
Good luck returning that book
That’s not a fail. That’s a bad joke on the part of the writer.
Fail fail. This is an old joke. I heard it in high school, which was more than ten years go for me now. To spell it out, since somebody didn’t get it: the fourth f is f**king. Get it?
Seems like a Political Correctness WIN in this case :/
Actually, I think this is an Assumption-Win ^^
It would be ‘feasting’ or ‘flawing’.
they didn’t have the guts to write “f*cking” in a textbook is all.
You got it.
This is NOT A FAIL, dumb-butts. They have been teaching this in psychology forever…they are not going to print F***ing in a text book. This is entirely intentional.
The fact that a word beginning with the letter “M” is listed as a word beginning with the letter “F” is a fail.
Retards, if you knew a thing or two about biology you would know its not a typo but a joke, the fourth f ‘mating’ obviously means f—ing
LOL I remember this book! I used it in one of my classes in college! I saw that line and I found it to be a Humor Win. So whoever thought this was a fail clearly cannot take a joke
LOL! Carlson’s Physiology of Behavior FTW!!!
I have this book…it’s actually pretty good.
It’s called “Brain Rules” by John Medina
I knew my psyche teacher didn’t make that up
IT MUST BE CALLED 3 Fs and 1 M.
Because censorship is enforced. I couldn’t “f**k” myself unto that!
oh, mate me.
This is out of my psychology book! Also, they have a part about running over an overly happy jogger in a track suit that bounces when he waits for the crosswalk. It is by far one of my favorite text books
LOL… this was in my Neuro textbook too!
I think that’s a win .. cuz we all know what’s the fourth “F”.
“I will tear your endocrine system out”
-gary busey
How about “Failing?”
Fornicating seems to be the best substitute here, however…=)
I remember this from my psych classes. This is probably the nerdiest joke I’ve ever heard.
i learned “fighting, feeding, copulation and fleeing” i loved my osyche profs.
Actually, for all you people saying it should be Fu*****, they could have used fornicating.
…win.
…No fail, this is actually what is taught. Easy way to remember it.
hahaha failblog FAIL. As many have pointed out, this is a very well-known joke in academia… but you ignorant notgiveashitters wouldn’t know! lulz
This is what happens when Creationists get a hold of textbooks.
Yep, old joke. My textbook had it as “Reproductive Behavior.”
That’s from Pinel’s “Biopsychology”, if I’m not mistaken. Total win, in my opinion, just like Pinel’s whole existence.
Actually, its suppose to be a psychology joke, mating is obviously to replace the workd f***ing, so it’s a win for psychology textbooks. Fail for whoever thought it was a fail.
Actually we learned that same thing in my Physiology class…It’s a good way to remember the four f’s
It’s not a joke. I seriously had this textbook and our teacher even laughed.
This is a Failblog fail, because that’s an old and classic joke about the hypothalamus. Everybody knows what the fourth F is supposed to be.
How is this a fail? This is a win!
its an old psych joke, its not even a FAIL
I’d say ‘fornicating’. This tactic is used in The Illusionist in order not to say the F word and get the movie out of general viewers’
This isn’t a fail at all!
This is a really well thought out joke that Failblog did not get.
Failblog fail.
That is actually in my psychology textbook. It pretty much goes with the rest of the book.
This is more like a WIN, right??
failblogfail.
Swing and a rare miss Failblog.
My best friend has this book. >.> >.< *sighs* I remember her talking to me about it last semester.
Fisting!!!
farting?
I’d probably like this even if it was a WIN, but FAILs are always funnier.
naw ai dink il like dis way…
infuct, ai tink im goeng tu bi deh onli kitteh in failbug …..
