5. itwasadarkandstormynight says:

I think this is more of a win than a fail.

6. bo3rn says:

why is that a fail?

20. Mich Mash says:

No, that’s a coincidence win.

21. Doug says:

Should be labelled Win, not Fail…

22. Jerr from Montana says:

totally fake.

That sign is obviously back-lit. Meaning there’s a light box with long fluorescent tubes in it, covered by a piece of plexi with the non-letter parts masked out, letting the light shine through the letters.

So having those letters out is an impossibility.

• slupine says:

Reposting this from another comment:

It’s not impossible when each individual letter has its own set of tubes. I work in building maintenance, we get calls for thing like this all the time. SOME signs have it where the tubes go across the whole sign, sure, but most places we service actually have individual letters that are on separate transformers. If the whole sign goes out at once, it’s usually a breaker issue.

Besides, if it were 100% backlit, the box you speak of would also have some glow to it and you’d see a square there.

• Jerr from Montana says:

I set up trade show exhibits at Moscone Center in S.F. for 14 years. Car shows, auto shows, medical shows, food shows, computer shows, etc. You get the picture.

There’s no way that each of those signs has 8 different transformers for each sign.

That sign is a big box with long florescent tubes in it. Think “Light Brite.” Covering the front of the box is a piece of plexiglass with the whole piece of plexiglass covered in black plastic, with cut-outs in the black for the letters and translucent white plastic covering the lettered area. I guarantee you that each letter does not have it’s own light.

Funny picture? Yes.

Fake? Yes.

• Basara says:

Fake: No

Jerr: Liar

Permanent building-mounted signs are almost always separately-lit letters, anymore. The only time I ever see one-piece signs are older signs, or places that buy cheap signs.

One of the reasons, ironically, is the increased supply and variety of compact flourescent lights these days, allowing each letter to use several smaller bulbs more cheaply instead of the expensive, prone to breakage, long tubes. Plus, the individual lights “stand out” better unlit during the day.

Now, the “Emergency & Trauma Center” sign below the individual letters IS a long box light like you describe.

But, you can LOOK at the letters that are the lit parts of ” lmhur t” and tell that the frames of the individual letters are NOT perfectly lined up with each other, as they would be in a 1-part box. FURTHERMORE, you can tell that the individual “u” lightbox has had a leak at some point that has allowed the bottom interior of the letter to become discolored – a discoloration that would have extended to the letters beside it, had it been “one big light box.”

23. locuas says:

FAKE!!!!

24. tAYTIE nOMP says:

IMPHOTOSHOPPED

25. If you were to photoshop this, why would you leave the original outline of the letters and dim them??? You’d just paint black over them, there wouldn’t be any outlines left.

Think!

Fail on all the photoshop police.

• Jerr from Montana says:

I downloaded this pic and zoomed it in. There’s no dimmed out letters.

This is fake.

They don’t put LIGHT BULBS in signs like those. They use LONG florescent tubes. A LONG TUBE doesn’t burn out only in certain spots, like behind letters. the WHOLE TUBE burns out.

• No shit Sherlock. Doesn’t the fact that ALL the bulbs are out at the same time tell you that this was done on purpose?

• slupine says:

It does when each individual letter has its own set of tubes. I work in building maintenance, we get calls for thing like this all the time. SOME signs have it where the tubes go across the whole sign, sure, but most places we service actually have individual letters that are on separate transformers. If the whole sign goes out at once, it’s usually a breaker issue.

• ZaphodQB says:

I did too.
I blew out the exposure and the E and the S are indeed there.

I posted a link to the over exposed image, but someone removed my previous post showing that the letters are there.

26. Some Random Other says:

I hate people who yell PHOTOSHOPPED to photos which are not, but I’m going to have to do it for this one. You can see the black boxes around the letters…

• SmartiPantz says:

and if that’s the case (PhotoShop), it STILL is funny…so there! Personally, I’m with the WIN votes (not a FAIL) on this, but still, someone thought of it. Give lexi-credit where it’s due!

27. Siobhan Donohoe says:

I would say this is a most definately WIN!

28. jinxed_07 says:

More of a WIN to me.

29. Eric says:

That hospital is in Elmhurst Queens. This isn’t photoshopped. I loved that sign. That picture has been the background on my phone and computer for the past month after I saw it. When your not expecting it and you walk into a hospital and you see that. Seriously one of the funniest things I have ever seen

30. dsd says:

EPIC PHOTOSHOP FAIL!

31. bitter and untalented says:

this is more of a sign ‘win’ if you ask me

32. scot says:

One of the absolute WORST photoshop pictures I have seen. Should have just used crayons to block out the letters.

• Kimboslice says:

I live right next to Elmhurst Hospital, its not photoshop!

• scot says:

You’re right – even photoshop would have done a better job. This is a printed picture where someone took black construction paper and taped it over the letters – and then scanned it on a 1980’s scanner – then posted it.

The thing looks that bad.

Ditto Machine Fail

33. Gritean says:

that’s no fail
it’s a pure win in my opinion

and it has to a photoshop doesn’t it couldn’t be the lights failing or be someone messing around there could it

34. Eric says:

Seriously, to all that say this is photoshopped. I HAVE PERSONALLY BEEN THERE!!! Its not!!!!! The friggin sign SCREAMS Im hurt!

35. How many of the “PHOTOSHOP!!!” idjits have actually ever used Photoshop?

36. Kimboslice says:

I am so glad someone was able to get this!!! I saw this two weeks ago driving home from Elmhurst Mall and I died laughing! I couldn’t get a clear photo but someone with camera skills was able! This is perfect!!

37. Ragimuff says:

Thats bogus, I posted this picture up a while ago and someone did the same exact thing that I did and it got posted? How does this thing actually work out? It’s the exact same as mine, they just reposted, I don’t get it I guess…Well, I’m glad though that it made it up here

38. Connor says:

No. REALLY? I NEVER would have guessed a hurt person would go to the hospital!! 0____0

39. Hai. says:

this is a win.

40. stan says:

Another epic Failblog Fake.

41. blurr says:

surely this is a win??

42. Alex says:

IN my book too, it is a win :)

43. BIG MAC says:

ROTFL

44. stephanie says:

whoa i live near this hospital and i have never seen this

45. Pablo says:

“Hospital Sign FAIL”???
.
No way, it’s a WIN! 100%
.
How about ‘FAIL Blog Caption FAIL’!! :)

46. slupine says:

Considering it’s a trauma center, I call that a win. lol

47. Fez says:

More of a win if you ask me.

48. Ben L. says:

I’m pretty sure this is a WIN.

49. 7Rock7 says:

Welcome to Imhur t.

50. .-.Samantha_Darko.-. says:

actually in my book that qualifies as an unintentional win.

51. yfrog says:

lol this is my fav fail

52. Cam says:

1′d for being win

53. pk says:

that’s where I’d want to go if I had an accident

54. PseudoWrestler says:

Fake, Turn up exposure, saturation and sharpness you see ‘dem blocks, lame!

• PseudoWrestler says:

Photoshop phail!

• more like WIN! says:

Idiot; the letters are there, it’s just that they’re turned off.
Common sense FAIL

• PseudoWrestler says:

I feel like you may have missed what i said earlier. Letters are off on the entire picture (except for where they are on duh) but where the off letters should be, there are black rectangles instead, and they are parallel with the edges of the photo, not with what should be the edges of the sign
id•i•ot: a person of the lowest order in a former classification of mental retardation, having a mental age of less than three years old and an intelligence quotient under 25.

• überRegenbogen says:

Welcome to the world of JPEG. The image is made of square tiles; so of course they line up with the edges of the image. 100% digital quality, baby!

55. rachel. says:

I’m pretty sure this was photochopped…
Dissapointment written all over my face, not literally though.

56. rachel. says:

my bad, just read all the other comments, unless they are conspiring.

57. cowpie says:

I would complain about fotoshoping… but that’s been done and screwed like a rusty bolt.

so! i say shame on the hospital staff for alowing the sign to have dead bulbs! people might have died from not knowing that the building was the ‘elmhurst’ center!

GIGGITY

58. jma666 says:

this is a FAIL only because this pic is fake and photoshopped…. The guy just darkened the letters… lame.

59. Fakey McFakerton says:

Gosh, somebody has photoshop on their computer. That’s comedy gold. Next.

60. looks photoshopped, but otherwise cute.

61. Kellyhitchen says:

That’s a hospital sign win! Brillient!

62. THOMASNATOR says:

This is a win, not a fail!

63. Julie says:

Looks like someone beat me to it, but that’s Elmhurst, in Queens NY. I lived a few towns over, and too bad I never got to see that sign :-)

64. Walkleyblade says:

Jeez, are you lot about to get religion, or what? If you believe hard enough, it’ll be true, in spite of pesky things like FACTS. Even on my crappy monitor that’s covered in flecks of dried Pot Noodle gravy I can see the lines where the poster has pasted over the letters. Look at the straight lines on the light overspill from the lower letters.

Real Fail Rules; F**k All Fake Fails

• Caghs says:

So instead of just blacking over the letters, someone went to the effort of colouring them in in a way that resembles … oh, I don’t know … backlit letters with a blown globe/tube?

Logic fail.

If this were truly photoshopped, they’d have just blacked them out, resulting in a black square.

65. Jerr from Montana says:

Hm. I totally stand corrected.

Do a Google Image search for Elmhurst Medical. There’s a couple of different pictures there of the same sign. One of them totally shows the other letters not lit up.

66. Becky says:

I’d say this is a win!

67. Kaboom says:

This is not a fail, it’s a WIN!
It seems totally geniune from what I’ve gathered.
I hope it was deliberate!

68. Kitty says:

That is one of those fine-line-between-win-and-fail things.

69. quentin says:

Oh this is the one in Queens NYC.

70. fghf says:

huh!?!?!?!?

71. Firestar says:

How is this a fail? It’s an epic win.

72. Sotordamotor says:

!!! holy shit i live in elmhurst!!

73. Jerr from Montana says:

you can see things a lot better in this pic here:

http://www.chrisnull.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/elmhurst-trauma-584.jpg

although the way the unlit E doesn’t line up with the rest of the word is a little odd.

74. Sudman says:

That’s my hospital..

75. StefKruger says:

Epic photoshop WIN… :)

76. kait says:

This is a shining comedic win, not an epic fail.

77. jeffro says:

hilarious, but shopped?

78. hayley says:

Omg that’s one of my dads clients!!!!!!! XD

79. Andrew Ong says:

Missing letters win.

80. _mark says:

Shopped. Sign Wins.

81. Freeze says:

I actually noticed that joke long before it was up here because I lived in Elmhurst until about a month ago. Didn’t have a camera at the time though.

82. TheCritic says:

That’s a win, duh.

83. Joschi says:

omg… it is so obviously a fake guys….. maybe even done with paint O.o

84. Aaron says:

I’m gonna laugh my ass off if that’s the one in Queens, NY. I had to go there 3 years ago when i twisted my ankle in the subway. Took the ambulance 3 goddamn hours to arrive after I called for it.

85. Aaron says:

for the people who say this is a fake, i’ll have to disagree on this one:

86. Kara says:

obviously photoshopped. you can see the black rectangles that are blocking off the letters.

87. Elmhurst resident says:

It’s very real. I live in the area and I noticed it about two months ago (they still haven’t corrected it). I’m glad that someone thought about putting it on here! Seriously, this is VERY REAL. I’ve had a few funny conversations about it in the neighborhood.

88. macfan406 says:

definitely a WIN

89. jj says:

Photoshop ftw

90. *Bleh* says:

TRAUMA CENTER XD

91. Supuhstar says:

LOL “Imhurt” X3 *saved*

92. Fredy says:

this is an edit, if you have really sharp eyes, you can see it where the S use to be, theres a black box covering it

93. ohcean says:

I looked in photoshop and you can still see the outline of the original letters. Plus, with number of people claiming real, it probably is.

However, it could very well be a prank still. Though we like to blame photoshop, it could possibly be a light technician who deliberately blew out the bulb letters when no one was looking… and being that it’s funny and more expensive to fix, if I was a hospital, I’d leave it too.

• aimee says:

i live not too far from this hospital. it is true. he only photoshopped it so you can see “Im hurt” more clearly probably because the camera he took the picture with it was a bit slow and caused it to be less legible.

94. grundo says:

the hospital is for curing sicknesses only

95. freekeee says:

shame its clearly photoshopped…
