As a truck driver myself, I know that there is about a 20 foot blind spot in front of the truck.
He was in a fuel station, so was likely updating his logbook when the man in the wheelchair proceeded into this blind spot, and was unable to get out of the way fast enough as the driver pulled out.

I remember that too. Some of the 911 calls they played on the news were kind of funny.

1st caller: “Oh my God Oh my God Oh my God!!! I CAN’T CALM DOWN!! There is a man in a wheelchair on the front of a truck going down the freeway!! Oh my God! He’s going to die!!! I CAN’T F****** CALM DOWN!!!”

2nd caller: “Uh yeah. um so there’s this guy and hes, like, in a wheelchair. and um, i think he’s stuck on the front of a truck. Pardon me? Oh. no, ma’am, the truck is moving. No joke, ma’am. Pardon me? Oh. um, i’d say about 50 or so. yeah, they’re really booking. Yeah, my pleasure. Talk to you later, ma’am.”

Then they interviewed the guy in the wheelchair, and he was all chill, like – “oh yeah. i was a little bit scared. well, kind of. but not really. it was actually kind of fun”

I live in the same town that this happened in. It was surprising the kid/guy wasn’t killed. What actually happened, too, was that his “helper” wasn’t next to him, but actually inside the local convenient store, or so I’ve heard.

Seriously. Doesn’t strike me as too surprising; they get enough craziness in their daily lives that getting pushed in front of a semi is probably just a mildly exciting occurrence.

Not if the soda spilled, as it almost certainly did, at or before the instant of greatest acceleration–that is, when the initial impact occurred. At 50 mph, it would be very difficult to alert the truck driver by throwing an empty soda, especially since the thing would’ve been blown away by the wind and taken for random unimportant litter.
