I don’t get it.
is the fail that you have to touch what 100’s of blind men and women would have touched before and after going to the toilet?
Why would a blind person touch the sign after they went to the bathroom? And what’s the problem with touching it prior to entering? How else would a blind person know what the room is or for whom?

I would like to agreeably disagree with you on the point of it being flat.
The colored portions are obviously etched and thus the dots being divots instead of the braille bumps, therefore not being flat at all but inverse, I have joyously proven your fail.

quite the opposite. it is smooth. That is the point of the fail. the person indicates that there is no tactile difference between the colored portions.
But they are not smooth, they are etched! A blind person would be able to feel the difference between the smooth parts and the etched parts and thus be able to read the braille!

I had a customer who happened to be blind come and ask for a computer monitor. I then asked him how much he wanted to spend. “The cheapest one you have”, his reply. I sold him one.
The next day he comes in the shop complaining it did not work. I plugged it to a cpu and it worked fine.
I had to assume either he did not connect it right or his graphics card was not working.
I am blind and I use a monitor but I also dont know braille so yeah

I’m not even sure it says “MEN”. Look at the last character. That doesn’t belong there. In Braille 2, “WOMEN” spells out “,,wom5″. “MEN” looks like “,,m5″. This (what I can see) says “END”!

It seems to be a reoccurring theme that people are not well versed in the basics of braille.
I am but I fail to see the fail. The structure of the braille on this sign is commonplace. There is no requirement that braille be raised; only that it be readable by a blind person. As someone pointed out, above, it’s etched. And that complies with the suggested standards of the AIA.
70% contrast, no. 1/32″ raised characters, no. Fail, yes.

Dear, Braille isn’t dented. That would be extremely difficult to read. Braille is RAISED. “Dented” would be an indentation, or…lowered.

One of my teachers loves jelly babies, and he demonstrated recently a rather terrifying talent: He can guess the colour of the next jelly baby in his bag of jelly babyies by feeling the colour. Out of three jelly babies, he got two correct, which in itself is quite scary. If he had gotten three, I probably would have screamed.
Aren’t the different colours different shapes in the Trebor Bassett jelly baby packs?

I don’t know what the standards are where you are, k@, but on this side of the pond, there is no requirement that braille contain raised bumps. And, yes, I know how long it takes to learn. Part of my training is from the Perkins School (brewski can probably confirm what that is) and my opinion is that the person who posted this as a fail failed to understand to requirements.
Braille is not easy in the first place. Please, for the love of God, believe k@ the custard platypus and anyone else who tells you – etched against smooth granite is NOT enough.

There’s no way to tell from this photo what kind of raising, etching, embossing, etc, this sign might have. But Petrander is right. The sign doesn’t need to have huge bumps. It’s not a book. It’s one word.

If it was sufficient, Braille would not exist- blind people would just have everything embossed. The very definition of Braille is a series of raised dots used to represent the alphabet. I am not blind, but I have worked with sight-impaired children for four years. Etching is not sufficient.
We have signs similar to these at my workplace (minus the Braille) and they are not etched- this is plastic. Dark plastic and light plastic. No etching, carving, no difference at all. Just different colors of plastic. I suspect that this is the case here.

Wow you fail! The braillle is the writing for blind people… You read it by passing your fingers on the surface but in this situation, you can’t read it because they are printed on the door, not in relief.

Ummmm .. this isn’t a fail at all. Yes, the braille “dots” are smooth marble, but the square around them is rough. When you etch into marble there’s a heck of a contracts in texture. This is not unusual in the least. If you run your finger along it, you’ll feel the difference. It’s perfectly legible to someone that knows braille.
I think the fail is the person that’s running her finger along it while she’s taking the picture. She can feel the difference, but decided to submit it anyway. There’s your fail!
I’m sure they could figure it out but it would be akin to trying to read small white text on a black background for those of us who can see. It’s possible but much harder than reading black on white. Regular bumpy braille is easily readable by sweeping your fingers over the page but I don’t think anyone could sweep over this. They’d pretty much have to touch every letter individually.
Again, I’m fairly certain that this sign is not marble. First, marble is expensive. Second, one can purchase signs with this very patter, and they are indeed plastic. We have them on the restroom doors at my workplace. Believe me, they are smooth. And not marble.

I can’t read the braille because I’m not blind but even if I was I couldn’t read it because it’s on my laptop monitor and it doesn’t have etched and smooth instead its only smooth all over but if I could and I was blind then I’m sure I could also read it, and then it wouldn’t be fail ebcause its infact says “men” but its because she holds her fingers over “wo” because she was already reding it, how the FKKK wuld she know where to hold the finger if she couldnt Feel it HUH !?!?! I mean shes blind come on !!!

BTW, if you look closely at the image of the plaque, you can see that the finger has its reflection on the dots, and a more diffuse reflection through the colored area that defines the dot, indicating that it is NOT etched in any way, but a thin print film, that allow light to pass through it. It other words, it’s as smooth as a mirror,
The only people who could read that braille with their fingers would be Superman and Daredevil, both of which in their comics have the capability to read printed word through their heightened senses, even off normal newsprint!

I think the person taking the picture would be able to tell whether the dots are flat or etched etc much better than anyone looking at the picture. So the fault is not in the judgment of the fail, but in the picture’s ability to convey the fail.

I think it’s ridiculous that some of you think you can deduce the specs of this sign from a low-res photo that’s been re-sized to 500×400 for the interwebs. Because I don’t think anyone would make an unreadable braille sign, I think the white area is etched as others have said, with the dots remaining smooth. While this may not be standard or the most easily-read method, it should still be sufficient for one five-letter word.
I’ve personally encountered three flat braille signs in my lifetime, as well as one on the speaker of a drive-through window. Braille fails are few and far between, but they do indeed exist. And, to repeat myself (sorry), it’s nearly impossible to distinguish etchings and embossings with your fingers. I know Braille (I work with disabled children, several of whom are blind) and can tell you that if it was so easy to distinguish, Braille would never have been invented in the first place.

This is an obvious FAIL. I can’t believe so many people don’t get it.
Braille only works if the dots are raised or at least textured so that the blind person can feel it. This is clearly a flat placard.
IT”S NOT ETCHED! I work for a company that makes signs like this (fortunately no faux braille yet) but these signs have a matte cote of clear ink printed on the UNDERSIDE to achieve an etched look much more inexpensively. No texture. No braille. Utter FAIL! Case closed.
I don’t understand how a coat of clear ink can give that effect. The black surround is shiny and so too are the dots. You can the person’s fingers reflected through the dots of the first two letters as though the dots are holes in the white sign. Are you saying that the ink on the back of the sign causes the dots to become translucent? That’s quite an achievement because the reflection of the person’s fingers shows no sign of diffusion. Are you sure about that?
It’s not shiny clear it’s MATTE. Printed on clear glass or Lexan it looks milky or “ETCHED” it is then placed over the black to finish the effect. The matte coat isn’t reflective so you don’t see the fingers reflected in it. And yes I’m sure about that. We print hundreds of signs like this every day.

Not only would it be impossible to distinguish, it appears to be on the INSIDE of the bathroom; note the tiled wall and bright lighting. In addition, signs for the visually impaired are almost always in short coming. Have you ever seen the sign in the McDonalds drive-thru that states “We have braille and picture menus available,” ? Find the fail in that.

But whether or not the joke makes sense somehow, the fact that it is difficult for most of the viewers to understand makes it a failblog fail. If it’s not easily understood, then it defeats the purpose of a fail.

So, it’s etched marble. The braille may not be domed and the such, but this in no way implies that it is unreadable as the dots are clearly raised. It could breach certain rules like ADA or whatever, depending on the country, but again, it doesn’t imply this is unreadable. The word is partially covered by the fingers and it is clear that there is more than just the word ‘men’ written in braille. The conclusion, then, is that this cannot be considered a fail and isn’t even remotely funny. It’s just a waste of time. Sorry to whoever posted the picture. Nice try though.

That is laser-etched, by appearances, rendering it nearly indecipherable to fingertips. Plus, the Braille is spelled wrong, and it certainly doesn’t meet ADA requirements–which is the only reason there is Braille on restroom signs in the first place. It is absolutely a fail. The word “WOMEN” should also be raised. Trust me, as a sign maker, FAIL.
From what I looked up, the braille doesn’t seem to be spelled wrong, are there different writing systems? Also, doesn’t the laser etched portions have a rough feel? If so, are you absolutely sure it is unreadable?
The fail is that the braille is smooth, not raised. A blind person would not be able to feel it.

clearly the fail is in not specifying that it’s a sign for toilets; blind people could quite easily see it as an advertisement. . . . at least that’s what i got from it.

LOL I didn’t get the fail until I read the comments, it’s but I have to say I was a bit surprised by how so many other, didn’t get what the fail was either, yet it so obvious (thanx Capitan!). Appears that the Braille is just there for show:( Well, it goes to show how society tends to overlook people with special needs. That is my finger! I took the picture. No, you cannot get a “pedicure” on your fingers…it’s called a “manicure”.
As for the fail…THE BRAILLE WAS TOTALLY FLAT! For those who are not in the know, braille is for blind people. Blind people, as they CANNOT SEE, read a language of three dimensional bumps. The sign was A FLAT IMAGE OF THESE BUMPS.
I put my finger up against the sign in an attempt to show how flat the braille was against my finger…and, no, there was no discernible difference in the braille texture and sign texture. THIS SIGN WAS A COMPLETE FAIL in handicap accessibility.

The braille is etched so it can be read, but it reads “Do Blow Here.”
