    • kannadzuki says:

Right, who needs schools, police, firemen, roads, libraries, national defense and other useless stuff like that?

      • ronin410 says:

more like: cash for clunkers, endless bailouts, fannie mae & freddie mac, HHS budget of $700+ billion per year. And an average federal hiring salary of $70k per year. Oh yeah and Congressmen get FULL pensions after just 1 term.

        • Dina says:

Well, seeing as the screenshot is from an Australian tv network, I don’t think US-specific programs apply.

We could talk about intervention in indigenous communities, failures in public hospitals and Wayne Swan’s idiocy instead, if you’d like.

          • kannadzuki says:

I agree with everyone that there is tons to complain about– I just took issue with people implying it’s the very *existence* of government that causes problems we face in all our respective countries. Even full-out libertarians recognise the need for *some* services from government.

Beware- blog & news junkie mini-rant ahead:

IMO, we may complain all we want, but if we don’t* get together in big numbers to put real pressure (phone calls, open letters, protests, boycotting companies affiliated with corrupt lobbies, &c.) on politicians, they’ll keep getting away with the BS their friends ask and lobbyists pay them to pull on us.

*Of course, I think a large part of the blame for public sheep-dom lies with the media’s utter failure to give people reliable and RELEVANT information from multiple points of view. Thankfully, blogs are starting to fill that gap.

            Take care, all.

I googled it. The story may be about Hawaii. I came up with “Kauai Property Tax Revolt: Government Sues Itself and Wins”. It looks like somebody has been in the Maui Wowie.

  14. brazzy says:

Funny thing is that lots of people (especially the libertrarian-leaning kind) will see this as yet another example why “big government” is bad and wasteful – when it is in fact the kind of thing that a big, centralized government usually *prevents*.

In the Libertarian Utopia where all public services are provided by for-profit companies, things that are now intra-government disputes usually settled by a higher authority would have to be resolved in a court *all the time*.

If you hire a new lawyer, your new lawyer should take care of the process of getting your file from your former lawyer and getting any necessary substitution of counsel filed with the court.
You can hire any lawyer you want, as long as they’re licensed to practice in the court where your case is pending, but hiring one near the courthouse can save you from having to pay for your lawyer’s travel time.

    NSW Govt sues itself
Posted On: 2009-07-28 Posted by Des Dugan

THE first legal action aimed at curbing greenhouse gas pollution from a coal-fired power station was launched yesterday with a lawsuit in the NSW Land and Environment Court.
The NSW Environmental Defenders Office has begun a civil suit which alleges a major NSW power station is breaching pollution laws, ABC’s Lateline program reports.
Peat Grey, a member of a regional NSW environmental group called ‘Rising Tide’ has launched the action.
″Bayswater power station is the equal largest coal-fired power in Australia ″ the equal largest and one of the least efficient in the country,″ he said.
″It emits approximately 12 to 15m tonnes of CO2 every year and that currently is totally unlicensed, totally unregulated and they’ve been doing that for over a decade.″
″At the moment, under the licences that are issued by the EPA, there is no regulation of carbon dioxide and what we are trying to do is say that carbon dioxide is a waste or a pollutant and it should therefore be regulated, because otherwise they’re breaching the pollution laws by emitting it,″ Kirsty Ruddock, NSW Environmental Defenders Office said.
Bayswater is run by the NSW Government-owned corporation Macquarie Generation, which supplies 40% of NSW electricity through Bayswater and its nearby Liddell power stations, the presenter of the program reports.
Environmentalists claim Macquarie is Australia’s single biggest greenhouse gas polluter.
The NSW Environmental Defenders Office will call expert witnesses to argue that carbon emissions constitute waste and should be regulated under state environmental laws which require companies to have a licence to pollute.
    Macquarie Generation responded saying: ″…
the corporation will respond through the normal court processes …,″ and described Bayswater, a power station it wants to expand, as, ″…
one of the most efficient and cleanest coal-fired power stations in Australia,″ which, ″…
    operates within its …
    environmental …
    licence.″
The court case is likely to proceed later this year.

  40. UnhappyVegemite says:

This what you get when the state of New South Wales is run by a garbage collector (seriously, he used to be a garbo!!) and has had the same government in for 14 years, with shocking train and bus services, allegations of corruption left, right and centre, sex scandals, police ministers dancing naked in offices, a treasurer, who after resigning decided to tell how he fudged the books to hide a $1 billion black hole in the state budget and political infighting so bad that in the last 4 years we’ve had 3 premiers! And they’re still just slightly better than the opposition party!!!!!!!

Democracy sucks balls sometimes :( who do you vote for if one party sucks and the other is worse? (BTW it’s compulsory to vote in Australia from council elections to state and federal elections)

    • arimareiji says:

This is not a fail, there is no such thing as the “government” there are state agencies, federal agencies and bureaucracies. They all act independently of each other and are often involved in legal disputes.
