  1. MRN ♂ says:

It’s all fun and games until… well, I guess it’s all fun and games!

  2. Arthur Eld says:

To be fair, it was a boring speech.

  3. Wow, all workplaces are in fact equal!

  4. The Moomin says:

If they were true colleagues, they’d at least be playing the same game.

  5. Big Cat says:

    *facepalm*

  6. MRN ♂ says:

Just to make it worse, the budget they are supposed to be considering (on August 31) is for the fiscal year that began July 1. Ahhh, my fair state.

  7. Arthur Eld says:

I wonder where the member of Congress Dirty Old Man from yesterdays fail was?

  8. Jim Heckel says:

Notice how the one on the left is pretty far into the game? It must have been one boring speech indeed.

  9. Everyone else seems to be on different internet pages anyway!

  10. The Moomin says:

My comment is being moderated by the way. Just saying. It’ll appear later, and I’m not replying to it.

  11. Johnny Mattress says:

Looks like the computer on the far right has iTunes open.

    • Arthur Eld says:

And the one bottom right has baseball on.

    • Freya says:

And I’m also pretty sure that one in the row in front of the people playing solitaire (manned by a blond-ish guy) has Pandora radio playing.

Goodness, I’d get fired pretty quick if I goofed off this much at work or get bad grades if I played on my laptop in class instead of taking notes!

The only scenario in which I think this behaviour could be acceptable is in case of a filibuster, but that’s a whole different story.

  12. mark the shark says:

“House Minority Leader Lawrence F. Cafero Jr., R-Norwalk, far right, …”

Lawrence F. Cafero Jr., R-Norwalk is not “far right”. He’s a moderate republican.

  13. prupert says:

Isn’t this more like DEMOCRACY fail. The more I see of politicians, the more I freaking hate the con that is Western democracy (disclaimer, I am from the UK and all our Politicians think that earning 3 times the average FAMILY income is a hardship, f&ckers).

  14. Piggy says:

So you all notified that author of this is most probably congressman (or what) too? I think that man who reads failblog isn’t completely waste of citizens money. Even when he is taking pictures of his colleagues instead of working.

  15. Duble fail? says:

Do nobody see the double fail? The guy in the lower right corner that is watching a baseball-game?

  16. Lifeguard says:

Surely, this is, in fact, a Solitaire Win?

  17. Maybe it’s recess and the guy with the microphone is singing!

  18. machofantastic says:

I also like how the person on the bottom right is looking at ESPN.

  19. Minbad says:

This is what I wanna do when I grow up

  20. Cadet Officer Timothy says:

Life is all FUN and GAMES. Come on!

  21. insert_name_here says:

So what if the party lost a few propositions! She made a new personal record on solitaire, so at the end of the day – it was a GOOD DAY!

  22. Marilyn says:

Expect to see this photo at election time.

  23. gogo says:

    what’s a budget ?

  24. Name (required) says:

Doesn’t look like any of them is doing the right thing or is it just me?

  25. Tempest says:

I think if you’re forced to sit in a room all day listening to some small congressman from Minnesota wax philosophical on the evils of big Government, you have to learn to multi-task so you don’t feel too much like poking your own eyes out with a pencil. I don’t blame them in the least. Plus, I don’t know about you guys, but I am perfectly capable of paying attention to what’s being said and playing solitaire at the same time.

    • ClariPossum says:

This exactly. I commented below, but yeah I have trouble keeping focus if I don’t have something else to do, so I imagine they have a similar issue.

    • Captain Boo says:

It is their JOB to sit in the room and listen to the honorable senator from MN wax philosophical. These people spent hundreds of millions of dollars trying to get that seat. One would think that they would at least have the decency to do the job they worked so hard to get, but no! here they all sit playing games and surfing the net. And we all wonder why govt. is so messed up?

  26. Dan says:

    Working hard or hardly working?

  27. 5 eagles C.C.C. says:

Killing time on the job will kill the job in time.

  28. ogre says:

Oooh! Oooh! Red 7 on black 8!

    • Micah says:

nope, this photo ran on the Hartford Courant’s Website and was taken by a photo journalist.

    • ClariPossum says:

Yeah it was on the news yesterday, it’s a real picture. I just think they might have trouble concentrating. I can easily listen to someone speak while playing solitaire. :)

  29. Rob says:

What about the guy behind them on ESPN?

  30. Micah says:

It should be noted that the two people paying solitaire are democrats? No Wonder it took them 2 Months into the next fiscal year to (barely) pass a budget.

    • Tom says:

Specifically, Jack Hennessey (Assistant Majority Leader) and Barbara Lambert.

Oh, the guy on espn.com is probably either Henry Genga or Timothy Larson (based on where they are sitting). Both also Democrats.

    • jbugboco says:

Shhhhhh! You’re interrupting the narrative! The only party mentioned in that caption was Republican, so naturally people are going to associate that party with the goofing off that’s going on. Persuasive writing 101: Strategic Wording and Creative Omission. Better luck next time PK.

      • slan agat says:

Not so much actually. It’s more like: if you’re from Connecticut, which you’d have to be if you’re bothering to read the Hartford Courant, you already know that what the Republicans say in the General Assembly does not matter. What matters is whether the Dems can keep their caucus together solidly enough to override Gov. Rell’s veto. This far along in the process, Hennessey and Lambert know what Cafero’s going to say backward and forward and it’s not going to change their position in the slightest.

  31. kamikaze says:

at least they aren’t playing couter strike

    hahahhahahahhahhahh

  32. ClariPossum says:

I saw this yesterday on the news. It occurred to me it might actually be helping them concentrate. I have a hard time watching someone speak for too long before my mind starts to wander. It helps me keep listening to have something to do like doodle or pick at my fingernails or something.

    • jbugboco says:

Try again. Doodling is different. It’s mindless and can be done as an outlet while your brain is otherwise engaged. Card games – and watching sports – require a diversion of thought. It’s fine to play a game while you’re taking a break from work, but even at my lowly job (i.e. not making decisions that affect the fiscal health of an entire state) it’s inexcusable to be doing ANYTHING during a meeting but paying attention and participating, even if that means just writing follow up questions or ideas about the subject being discussed. Fire them all.

      • ClariPossum says:

Well, it is Solitaire, and that is a pretty mindless game. I play it all the time at work (when it’s slow, anyway, which is most of the time) while listening to the news. I can do both just fine. If they’re listening to someone talk for a long time, it can be hard to keep your eyes focused on the person without needed to give your brain something to do. It’s easy for a lot of people to play Solitaire while listening to someone talk.

  33. galad says:

What’s the big deal? It’s not hard to listen to a speech and play at the same time. Besides look how many people have laptops in that pic. Obviously every one of them is doing something else while that guy talks.

  34. d says:

you sure this was taken this year?

  35. Someone Nicer than Jenny... says:

He is not really speaking – this is break time and he is singing Frank Sinatra Karaoke.

  36. specialted says:

the guy on the right has ESPN.com open too. wow.

  37. Răzvan says:

Oh gee, i wonder why the world is crashing down… cuz everybody is on youtube or playing solitare

  38. MistyEyes says:

  39. !!! says:

haha, guy on the right is on ESPN.com

I’m not going to read the comments to see if this has been said yet.

  40. YES says:

and you all think solitaire it’s not boring ? :(

  41. Erin McGehee says:

Yeah, no one noticed the closest computer screen on the right is looking at baseball too!!!!!!!!!!

  42. notanengineer says:

oh yes… politics today… what wold have George Washington done??? :-D

  43. X says:

I wondered why the health care bill had provisions for “red on black” and “aces are ones”.

  44. LoL… I always tough they do that when no one is looking xD… real life proof xD

  45. idunno says:

    ESPN on far right computer

  46. meerkat says:

Methinks these people need to find new jobs!

  47. Maren says:

Haha, that looks like every class I had in law school, seen from the back. Your future leaders, ladies and gentlemen.

  48. Albert says:

Now we know why congress is the opposite of progress.

  49. Zachariah says:

Does anyone not notice the espn on the computer behind it.

  50. At least the lady on the left has the good sense to play spider solitaire

  51. SouthwesternEagle says:

Ahh!! I live in CT! No wonder this place is so f***ed up.

  52. rejuiceroO0 says:

Those slackers should be punished! 2 weeks Solitairey confinement should do it.
    *coughs*

  53. ASUChick617 says:

Do You Have ANY Idea How Boring It Is In the Senate… Someone Go Sit As Long As They Do About the House Majority Leader’s Dribble and You Tell Me They Wouldn’t Want to Screw Around… I’m Surprised XBoxes Haven’t Been Smuggled In…

  54. Theomeny says:

http://blog.ctnews.com/connecticutpostings/2009/09/01/whos-playing-solitaire/ The people playing solitare have been identified. The woman is Barbara Lambert, D-Milford, and Jack Hennessy, D-Bridgeport.

  55. CS says:

That guy on the bottom right is looking at baseball clips! That’s what I’d be doing. :)

  56. Becks says:

they’re playing freecell i think. its def. not solitare… way too many cardds.

  57. blackrosemoth says:

Hey now… only one is playing Solitaire. The other one is playing Freecell. Big difference.

  58. rejuiceroO0 says:

This is Baseball/ESPN statement number 11. As you were people.

  59. frado2jr says:

My tax paying dollars are paying for this……. they must be democrats

  60. Justin says:

Good thing there’s no money involved… wait a sec.

  61. Justin says:

    It’s a house of cards… ok, i’ll stop.

  62. Gamayun says:

    Your tax dollars at FAIL.

  63. eatwesty says:

eh! at least none of them were playing world of warcraft!!! then i think we would all be screwed, them being republican or democratic!

  64. J says:

Can I get paid those big bucks to do that?

  65. Elaine says:

I work for an Illinois legislative agency. When I first saw this picture I thought for sure it was “our” legislators ;-) But even though it’s not, I’m sure this scene has been repeated in our capitol many times…

  66. Andrew says:

Ever seen a legislature in action? Floor debate is pretty much a sham – everyone’s mind is made up already, and the only reason anyone makes speeches at all is so they can go on record as having spoken for or against something. The people playing solitaire are the only honest ones in the room.

  67. andrew says:

And another guy is on espn.

  68. PencilSharpener says:

They’re STILL playing MS Solitaire these days?

  69. LuLuLuLu says:

    this looks suspisiously photoshopped

  70. martin says:

    hahaha espn and solitare ftw

  71. KILL OBAMA says:

This is fake because everyone know anyone in governement is way to stupid to play solotare.

  72. Lydia says:

haha the person on the far right’s on iTunes… needed some music evidently?

  73. itman says:

    epic fail for me.
the lady on the right is my friends grandma

  74. BG says:

and I bet that the guy with the mic is singing karaokesongs, common sing along, one more time!

  75. Dave says:

I think i saw someone in the right of the picture listening to XM Radio XD

  76. stephen says:

  77. s.liz says:
