iv done that before.. except it was with a nice pair of binoculars and a half decent camera, and i was taking a picture of a mountain.. it works, really well actually
No, not seriously. In fact, she’s probably smarter than most people with a P&S camera. Optical zoom > Digital zoom. Sure it’s utilitarian, but I like utilitarian.
you are so incredibly sexist. did you know a woman invented the car heater? women have also invented saws, ovens, dishwashers, submarine lamps and telescopes, windsheild wipers and a lot more. you don’t realize how moronic you sound.
I believe they call it “digi-scoping.” Works amazingly well. The real pros get one of those rifle scopes and actually mount it to the camera. I’ve seen some incredible pictures with the technique.
Depends. 200-400mm F4 VR will set you back 4779.99 GBP, but getting a 200, 300 and 400 prime set will set you back far more (the only prime in that list that exists at F4 in the Nikon range is the 988.99 GBP 300mm F4, which has no VR).
Zooms can often outclass primes, take the 14-24, which sells for 1283.99 GBP. It outclasses the 14mm, 20mm, and 24mm prime lenses, which together would set you back 1937.97 GBP, and the former gives you the convenience of not requiring lens changes.
Digiscoping uses a spotting scope. What the lady is doing is called “digibining” or “digibinning”, where the spurious “bin-, binn-” combinatorial form refers to binoculars. Personally, i feel that “digibinning” in either spelling is a neologism fail, but for the time being that is what it is and that is what she does.
Agreed as well. I did this once from the top of the Space Needle in Seattle, with those huge telescopes. I saw a great building and wanted a closeup. It took two or three tries, but it came out really well.
Indeed, I often use this when I want a closeup and only have my compact camera with me. And a binocular of course, or even better the monocular I bought for this. I even tested the monocular on my camera in the shop, so I was sure it worked both for normal use and for photos
No, telescopes are telescopic (i.e. they extend) a monocular is a fixed length.
I’ve also done with with a monocular & a digital camera (the rubber eye pad on the monocular tucked neatly around the lense of the camera too) and it worked moderately well.
A telescope is simply a scope designed for looking at things far away. The root “tele” is the same as “telephone”, “telegraph”, “telephoto”, “telepathy”, et cetera. The opposite of this is a microscope, a scope designed for viewing things close up. Telescope typically refers to larger scopes such as those for viewing celestial objects, but some very large stand mounted binoculars are sometimes referred to as “binocular telescopes”.
Monocular just means one eye. The opposite is binocular, or two eyes. So you can have a binocular telescope or a binocular microscope or a monocular telescope or monocular microscope.
Your side by side comparison of telescope and microscope would indicate that a telescope makes things further away, alas it is not. A microscope is for viewing ‘microscopic’ material; they both perform the function of making things appear closer/larger.
Perhaps that’s where the name originally came from, but telescopes do NOT need to extend (i.e. telescope) to be a telescope. Check out a schmidt-cassegrain or schmidt-muskatov telescope. (although since you can move the eyepiece in and out, that’s “technically” extending the scope, I don’t consider that “telescoping” as in collapsing down most of the way)
The verb telescope is based on the fact that some telescopes telescope for easier storage, but the original term telescope, as stated previously means basically to see far
That is called ‘digi-scoping’. My friend is an ornithologist and uses this technique preety often… He uses real rifle-scope however… Maybe a moderate fail in this particular case… but not in general…
Actually, many point and shoot cameras only have digital zoom, not optical zoom, so you lose resolution when you use the camera’s zoom. Her solution is an optical zoom. I say ingenuity win.

It stands to reason that Hammond needs a box, 2 feet 4 inches in height to stand on.
I’ll stick my vote in for “actually, WIN” as well. Looks like she’s at an air show. Optical zoom (if you have it – digital is no subsititute) on compact cameras is nice and all, but usually not enough to get the level of magnification you want for such things. So what can you do… blow hundreds of dollars on an SLR and super-telephoto lens that are real heavy and you’ll never use again, or dual-purpose the binocs you brought along?
Though if you want it to work well, it’s better to have them held more vertically, easier to keep them on the front of the camera that way. It’s extra win if she’s actually managing to focus on and track anything with them held horizontally like that.
Polarised or special deep-tint sunglasses also make for good cheap glare-blocking filters without having to stump up for said SLR and compatible add-ons, and reading glasses can improve your macro closeness. All of these I have regularly done (in fact, kept the lenses out of an old pair of sunglasses that got mangled because of how useful they were)… give it a go and be surprised at the results
I’ve used the binoculars and polarized sunglasses techniques with my camera too. Results vary, but they’re usually pretty good. And why not at least try it? Being able to experiment like this and see right away whether it worked is one of the greatest benefits of a digital camera. FAIL to the original poster who didn’t stop to think about any of this.
I wouldn’t even send this to ThereIFixedIt – proper respect to the photographer for using her elbows on the bench to steady the camera and using the fence to steady the binoculars.
actually I put abba into my pandora station and it played bee gee’s. mamma mia was on tv. but right this very second it’s “Don’t go breakin’ my heart” from Elton John
I took a birdwatching trip once when we were on vacation. A brit was in the group who went birdwatching since childhood.
He had a relatively cheap compact digital and a bigass telescope. Apparently, it’s called “scoping” and works quite well.
I have actually done the same thing with a cheap compact camera and a pair of binoculars to take pictures of an owl that landed on my roof. Worked quite well.
It’s not actual a fail..
That really works!
Give it a try…!
So you get closer to objects than your zoom…
Also putting the photo in front of a microscope lens is working!
Totally NOT a fail. I do this all the time, not only do you get good pictures, but at concerts and such you can get really cool photos as the light is deflected differently
yet another dumbass trying to insult cubs fans. and for you to tell this is actually wrigley field not being a cubs fan you must be from either st louis or milwaukee i’d guess. and btw dumbass, this actually works. gtfo
This situation really seems to be true.
Most of the cameras had a clear capture photos only for a near sites.
But,when capturing someone who is far,it is very blurred when using zoom. How could this be answered by manufacturers?
There is actually another term for this: digibinning, referring to the use of binoculars, whereas in digiscoping you use a telescope. Providing you master the technique and use quality optics, it is definitely possible to capture superb images this way.
poeple are just throwing up anything on failblog and calling it a fail when its not. and not even trying to be crative with the titles let alone the submissions. BTW thats not a fail. ive done that before with an inexspensive meade telescope and an old VHS camcorder way back in the day to get unbeliveable shots of the moon. it not only worked i could play it back and show it off on the tape. i had to keep moving the telescope and lining up the camera with the eye peice. it was a juggling act but i could actually get all kinds of insane texture detail and shadows cast from the craters and rocks.
This actually works quite well. The girl obviously knew what she was doing.
Some companies made attachments to hold the binoculars to the lens, if you do it right it can zoom in quite far.
Definitely not a fail. I myself have done this. I could see the double knots in Bill Belichicks shoes from a hundred yards away. Big time WIN right there.
Actually, I think she’s just trying to see through the binoculars… It makes sense: If she were to just put them up against her eyes, it would be hard because they’d jostle around, so she’s bracing it on the chain link. But if she were to try to put her eyes against it with it like that, she’d look silly, have to lean way forward, and could possibly get bumped and get a black eye. So she found a solution. I applaud her. I doubt she think it’ll make the picture more zoomed in if she takes one.
I did this at a concert once. I had nosebleed seats, but (except for the angle at which they were taken) the pictures looked like I was sitting really close.
Actually, this is a zoom win, lol! What better way is there to take a long distance shot on a budget? Would you rather purchase a $1k lens attachment for what would have to be a $2k camera, or would you rather use $20 binoculars and a $60 camera?
I do this all the time when I don’t have my SLR with me. Point-and-shoot digitals have terrible lenses on them, and if you zoom even a little bit you’ll lose quality. Binoculars solve the problem.
i did this at a football game and got a real nice pic of the quarterback
this is a win and a genius one thanks anonymous lady for the awesome idea and picture

I’ve done this too, it works and is win.
Amazing isn’t it … put a zoom lens in front of a camera and it works well -.- Why on earth wouldn’t it!?
I think this is an ingenuity win personally!

what do you expect from a girl? Its not like they are pros in electronics.
Ugh. Seriously?
No, not seriously. In fact, she’s probably smarter than most people with a P&S camera. Optical zoom > Digital zoom. Sure it’s utilitarian, but I like utilitarian.
It’s not electronics, it’s optics. I tried it once and the picture was out of focus. Then I tried it again and it worked well.
you are so incredibly sexist. did you know a woman invented the car heater? women have also invented saws, ovens, dishwashers, submarine lamps and telescopes, windsheild wipers and a lot more. you don’t realize how moronic you sound.
It’s not electronics, its optics….some of us ARE professionals in optics.
yeah, most of those discoveries goes great with man’s discoveries, like the: car, submarine, houses, and the science of astronomy.
No offense, but lalalalala, but you fail. You fail. Thats just it. The whole truth.
I agree! I do that all the time, it works wonders!
ZOOM WIN!
Yep, it works. And it also works to do this on a microscope. Both the work additionally with the camera zoom.
Absolutely a win, done this myself while hunting to get a shot before taking a shot.
I agree. That’s no fail. It’s a moderate win.
^^ indeed.
It may look silly but it’s a great method for people without an optical zoom feature on their camera. WIN.
Agreed as well.

Wow bar, great picture!

its great even when you have optical zoom!
its a great way to get really close close-ups, even optical zoom has limits
I believe they call it “digi-scoping.” Works amazingly well. The real pros get one of those rifle scopes and actually mount it to the camera. I’ve seen some incredible pictures with the technique.
the real pros use zoom lenses, not rifle scopes :/
The real pros most likely use prime telephoto lenses. Zoom lenses are usually either lower-quality or more expensive.
Depends. 200-400mm F4 VR will set you back 4779.99 GBP, but getting a 200, 300 and 400 prime set will set you back far more (the only prime in that list that exists at F4 in the Nikon range is the 988.99 GBP 300mm F4, which has no VR).

Does it occur to you she didn’t have those things available?
Rifle scope? Nah….. hasabrain said: “Real pros use zoom lenses”. Pros use zoom lenses. REAL pros use telescopes! HA!
I’ve taken many moon shots, and even some of the rings on Saturn with my digital camera thru the eyepiece of my telescope. NICE!
Telescopes nah, real pros use zoom lens coupled to rifle scopes to telescopes, that’s how the real pros do it.
LOL

That was my thoughts. Then you don’t lose resolution with “digital zoom”.
Digital zoom is for luzers that don’t know better or folks with a cheap-azz camera, so cheap it doesn’t zoom.
What is a “luzer”?
Yes, I’ve done it too with an old 3MP P&S and 16X binoculares. It worked very well!
Agreed as well. I did this once from the top of the Space Needle in Seattle, with those huge telescopes. I saw a great building and wanted a closeup. It took two or three tries, but it came out really well.
Me too.
i agree, I’d imagine the photos would look pretty cool too

yet another dumbass trying to insult cubs fans. and for you to tell this is actually wrigley field not being a cubs fan you must be from either st louis or milwaukee i’d guess. and btw dumbass, this actually works. gtfo
It’s called digiscoping
Yea, I have to agree with the others. This isn’t that ridiculous of a situation. It works really well actually. WIN.
If it works, it’s really a ‘win’
Wait I’ve done that…XDDD IT WORKS I TELL YA. At a Paramore concert =P Well it was No Doubt…but I only went to see Paramore. ^-^
Ingenuity WIN!
I know it has been posted numerous times but as a photographer myself I do have to say that this isn’t a FAIL because it can work!!
When done with a spotting scope it’s called “digiscoping.”
FAIL FAIL
I made some pictures like this at the monsterjam in Arnhem in Holland. It worked really well
ingenuity win.
Failblog Fails again.
Looks like another Failblog Fail.
poeple are just throwing up anything on failblog and calling it a fail when its not. and not even trying to be crative with the titles let alone the submissions. BTW thats not a fail. ive done that before with an inexspensive meade telescope and an old VHS camcorder way back in the day to get unbeliveable shots of the moon. it not only worked i could play it back and show it off on the tape. i had to keep moving the telescope and lining up the camera with the eye peice. it was a juggling act but i could actually get all kinds of insane texture detail and shadows cast from the craters and rocks.
innovation win
Actually, I consider this a creativity win. I might try it sometime.
Moar like zoom win, this works.
This is a zoom win. It’s a known technique. Unfortunately it doesn’t work very well. I may have tried it with that exact brand of binoculars, too.
hey, that works you know. I’ve done it myself
This isn’t a ‘fail’ at all. This actually works really well.
yeah, i tried this before too and it works very well. I had a black rim around my pictures though, but it’s sorta cool =)
retard.
this fail is a fail
this is a WIN!
it works! ive tried it!
-insert blonde joke here-
This actually works quite well. The girl obviously knew what she was doing.
Some companies made attachments to hold the binoculars to the lens, if you do it right it can zoom in quite far.
Definitely not a fail. I myself have done this. I could see the double knots in Bill Belichicks shoes from a hundred yards away. Big time WIN right there.
actually, epic win – I do this with pretty awesome results (birds, bugs, you name it)
Total WIN. I have done that. It really works!!!
Camera + binoculars actually works pretty well.
I did it…
IMO, that’s a win…
Digital zoom is a fantastic fail.
actually, if it works, it would be a zoom win…
providing she has it pointing the right way…
I’ve done that before. It was with a spotting scope though. All bird photographers try it at some point before they get a decent zoom lens.
The picture quality is poor, but it works somewhat.
That actually works really well for a little extra zoom if you do it right.
i hope its been pointed out that this is at wrigley field, stupid cubs fans
Actually Bill, while that is at Wrigley, most people call it a win. You fail, maybe a reading comprehension fail.
I did this at a Mariners baseball game to get a shot and it looked better than any ESPN picture!!
that does work.
I’ve done that a lot of times in zoos and in concerts.
I agree with some people who commented “failblog fail” lol
hahaha
ive done this with a rifle scope and it worked really well
Fail my ass! That technique works really well. It is much better than a “digital zoom” on point’n'click digital cameras. I call this a WIN!
I bet the person who take this picture uses the same method.
Actually, this is a zoom win, lol! What better way is there to take a long distance shot on a budget? Would you rather purchase a $1k lens attachment for what would have to be a $2k camera, or would you rather use $20 binoculars and a $60 camera?
It’s a win xD
That works. I’ve tried it.
…somewhat.
lol.lll
yeah .. uhm. fail fail.
I’d say this is more of a win
Yeah I think your mom said the same thing.
Is it just me or is she actually onto something?
This is either a double fail– she’s looking through a fence and binoculars–
or a double win.
Actually that’s not a fail – it actually works!
Oh, thats sooo ghetto.
What’s wrong with this? It’s how I zoom my camera.
this is a stupid picture, i do that all the time… works fine!
Not at all a fail, this works amazingly if your camera has a shitty lens.
Agree with most people here, can create a cool effect.
ryneb, the submitter, has failed.
FAIL?
I Say: INGENUITY WIN!!
I totally agree.
Do this all the time. Call digiscoping. Usually use a real spotting scope, but binocular work well.. The looser that put this up is just jealous!
All the loosers knocking digi-scoping, figure this. I spent $5000 on my camera & lens. This method gets me closer and cost under $1000. Go figure.
i dont think you guys get the fail……she’s using binoculars with a digital camera…….digital cameras ALREADY HAVE ZOOM!!!!!
And when you use two zoom lenses you get???
More zoom, fail.
I do this all the time when I don’t have my SLR with me. Point-and-shoot digitals have terrible lenses on them, and if you zoom even a little bit you’ll lose quality. Binoculars solve the problem.
I always wanted to try something like that… hmmm maybe I’ll go try it right now
This isn’t a fail, it actually works, and you can take pictures through microscopes too, it’s really cool
Uh, that’s actually a win. I do it all the time.
Actually this works pretty well in a pinch.
Mislabled should be win.
I don’t see a fail here. If it works then it’s not a fail.
Hey, don’t knock it. I’ve gotten some good shots by doing this…
Dude, more like camera zoom win. It’s like adding another 10x to your camera’s zoom rating.
That’s a complete zoom win, doesn’t really work with telescopes tho, only simple lenses like nocs i think, but saweeeet anyway.
Your web site is beautiful. I wish you continued success.
Lol this image is a WIN not a FAIL
Done that with a rifle scope and it works. That is not a fail!
that’s absolutely not a fail – it really works!
You can see it working on the screen of the camera.
IVE DONE THIS BEFORE! … and it actually works. it should be a win not a fail!
This isn’t a fail…
i did this at a football game and got a real nice pic of the quarterback
this is a win and a genius one thanks anonymous lady for the awesome idea and picture
I’ve done this before. It works relatively well.
Actually, that works really well. Your picture is just a little… round.
good
!
I’ve done this before-it creates a cool effect.
i think that’s a win!
Seriously…. Theres no reason why that wouldn’t work!
This works. I have tried it. This is not a fail, more like a win.
i do this though!!!!
