So over the course of the last two school years I have been trying to teach myself braille. (It's a course requirement.) Anyway, today I was perusing older posts on failblog and found this picture. It is saying that the billboard failed to spell "Stevie Wonder" correctly. Actually they did. You see, the first dot is a capital, then the next two are short form for "ST" It's called a one cell contraction and is designed to save space. (Even with contractions, brailled books take up shelves of space.) If you look at the end you'll see another contraction for "ER" So in the end, yay, failblog failed.

This just isn't a fail at all!

I can also confirm this is grade-2 Braille! I work at a specialist college for the visually impaired called Henshaws. I can read grade-1 and am working on grade-2.. I work with this day in day out during term times. People should learn about things before they take this piss out of it!

Was about to say that this is not a fail braille - but was correctly using contractions.... and luckily a few others already commented.
Shame on those who judged this a fail because the braille was 'wrong' - you just showed yourselves up for being ignorant.

Braille at its simplest level has one set of dots per character, but in grade II braille, a combination of dots will indicate punctuation and sets of letters commonly seen together.
Remember that a sighted reader skims over the typed word, and with proficient braille readers they have to read every character of every word, and using contractions speeds up the reading process.

The point of the billboard was to draw attention to braille - in the anniversary year of Louise Braille, thus it is a win. Many organisations and blind people use braille in their logos and adverts, even though only the sighted braille reader can see it, the reason it is done is to emphasise that this is a legitimate form of communication.

Whomever wrote that the braille on the billboard is wrong, is wrong themselves.

The braille added to the billboard is written using "grade 2" braille (with a capital S and W) and the braille put below it is written in "grade 1" braille without capital S/W.

Confirmed. I learned Brl to become a transcriber when my wife lost her eyesight. The grade 1 Brl at the bottom spells out each letter for "stevie wonder", but the Brl on the billboard uses grade 2 Brl, which has a lot of contractions for common letter combinations, and uses a leading dot to signal capitalization, so it does indeed read "^[st]evie ^wond[er]"
