Technically Alabama and every other US state is a country. The way the system is set up makes it so. Texas was a full fledged country before it joined the US. Every state in order to be a member state of the US, must have a working state wide government already in place, aka able to be their own country.

@mandy: Actually Texas can become its own country again if it wants. It is in our constitution and the agreement that was made when the Republic of Texas was annexed as a state. We can also split up into 5 separate states that would each be better than every other state in the nation.

This is probably really nerdy, but you’re is wrong. On his first and second voyages he only went to the islands near Central America. On his third voyages he went to South America. Then, on his FOURTH, he went to Central America. and they really just called most of it the New World, as far as I know.

@Hebime: You are right about North America and South America, being 2 separate continents, which is why a lot of people when referring to the entire area call it the Americas, but I will have to stop you at USA, because logically speaking that comment makes no sense. How can a single entity be described as united? Isn’t it already united, unless they are separate states that aren’t?
I would think that the states are indeed countries, but since USA (the central government) has a lot of power , the lines are a bit a blurred, which gives them the regional power, rather then the power of country. You could be right, after all I am not American, but then its name wouldn’t make sense. You cannot call a country united, but you can call a collection of countries united, that is why nobody calls Italy, the United Kingdoms/States of Italy (Italy was a lot of countries before) and if you look at the UK, they are not talking about the Regions, but about Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England and its Islands. You simply cannot refer to Scotland as a region (apart from that, its also very insulting to the Scots) and I think you cannot refer to the States as regions. Again I could be wrong, but I was pointing out the flaws in your argument for the “united state” bit, because isn’t it obvious when describing external entities that a single entity is united to begin with?

Before when it was West Germany and East Germany, they were 2 different entities belonging to 2 different super powers following different ideologies and having different forms of government. This is somewhat off-topic, but is the best practical joke to-date that I have heard of…
I worked as a dispatcher for both the city police department and the county sheriff’s office here, and they were constantly trying to one-up each other. So one day we had a call from a man who claimed to have found a box of dynamite that was leaking, so naturally everyone freaked out. Everyone in the entire county and some surrounding counties was babysitting this box of leaky dynamite while the bomb squad was called in. It took the bomb squad 4 hours to arrive at the scene, and when they walked in they all started cracking up laughing.

What had initially been identified as a box of leaky dynamite was in fact a bunch of railroad flares.

So, a couple of weeks later, the county deputies took some play-doh and stuck some wires and a clock in it and left it on the doorstep of the city police’s squadroom.

I think this is something endemic to Latin American news. after the Challenger blew up, the Costa Rican news reported all sorts of crazy things about the accident. My family was host to a Costa Rican exchange student not long afterwards and he told us all the stuff they apparently either just made up or misunderstood when they got it from the US news services.
People should remember this kind of thing when the listen to the news. You get fed crap a lot more often than you’d like to believe.

Same thing happened here in Romania. We have a show called “Direct Access” and they even had some guests invited to comment on the state of mind of who took the pictures. All of those invited (commercial pilots, doctors, psychiatrist) started in making various suppositions on what was in the head of the photographer in the last moments of his life and praised the courage he had. And they continued to comment for about one hour. The moderator invented 2 airline companies, a crash somewhere in the jungle and presented everything as real facts. Idiots…Next day he tried to excuse himself…

Sorry guys, but accident described by reported is not Air France accident. It is about an accident which happened in Amazon jungle, 2 years ago. A Brazilian aircraft shocked itself against a North American airplane. Obviously everybody died instantly, but American crew in second airplane.

Though in other languages, it sounds fine and works. The biggest problem the word ‘American’ encounters, is in the Latin world and languages. It is seen far differently than than United States citizens.

Sorry to break it to you…but North America and South America are indeed two separate continents. That’s recognized not only in the U.S., but around the world. There is no “American” continent. America is generally used to either refer to the United States of America, or to North and South America as a whole. They are two separate continents, as is recognized around the world. Not trying to defend them but I speak Spanish myself and according to what the newscaster is reading, they are actually showing the scene as archive footage and not implying that those are the actual images from the crash. The lady first shows the pictures alledgelly taken at the moment, and then talks about the camera that took those pictures (during the lost scene), and how it was found on a place near the crash.
I just saw the vid in the comment section. Well, that makes more sense.. I thought it was weird for a news broadcast to use that kind of scenes for their reports.

About countries/continents- try look on books and not on the first site what you got on google. “Americas” to the three continents – North, Central, South America. English is a barbarian language, so country mean more than 1 thing. In latin languages, like portuguese or spanish the word “Pais” mean country as a nation only. So the name of U.S. is not “America”, is United States of America. Just a name. Canada and Mexico is on north america too, but not part of U.S.A. (well… Canada is not… about Mexico… not yet).
Brazil is called Brazil – not Federative Republic of Brazil. This name was used many years ago. Bolivia is a beautiful country with really nice ppl (I had been there when goes to Machu Pichu – in Peru – another beautiful country). All in south america.
In central america we have well knowed countries like Cuba and Panama.

About the video – only photos was used. Probably someone sent that pics to them or some stupid producer got that pics and use it as real photos of the accident. They said on video about places pretty far from accident (serra do cachimbo is inside Brazil, close to Amazon forest and accident was on atlantic ocean at north-east of Brazil).
And U.S.A. is not an A contry. Time will show this.
