  1. The Moomin says:

Fail! They’ll be poisoned by rainbows.

    • Oh Naaah says:

      Moorning.

    • POB 2.0 says:

      And the metallic oxide salts.

      • The Moomin says:

Aren’t metallic deposits a symptom of rainbows? As is leprechaun infestations.
        (Howdy. You’ve been rebuilt?)

        • POB 2.0 says:

Not sure. All I know is that this wasn’t happening twenty years ago, but now it’s happening now.
(Howdy! *squeeze* Old laptop died in early April, so I wasn’t online for a few weeks.)

          • Sidhe Cat says:

I don’t think I want to taste the rainbow, after all.
(Good to have you back, POB! We missed you.) *squeeze*

    • Mathew says:

I’ll help you with the math: the sign reads 167 bottles (per person)!!! 300 million americans in 2006.. is a total of 50 billion bottles. 32% of 50 billion is 16 billion .. leaving you with 34 billion that is wasted… No fail at all just strangely worded, other than that makes perfect sence.

      • StarTaco says:

I still say it’s a fail, on the grounds that I’m american, and I don’t drink bottled water at all, so thats a count of 0 for me. Therefore their facts are still wrong. ;)

(plus they didn’t say each, at all)

        • Scott says:

yes, but on average it is probably true. IF you take the total bottled water consumption for the US for that given year and divide it by the population, you probably get around the 167 figure as noted on the sign. Still no fail.

I drink maybe 2 bottles of water a month at most, but I have friends that drink cases of them (not sure why) so in the end it averages out.

      • Scott says:

I agree completely. I did the math, then went to leave this exact comment – you beat me to it though, but are correct. the sign is very poorly worded, but makes sense, and is factually correct.

        • SeveredHead says:

But it never says “on average”. That is the whole point. It doesn’t make any claims that it is each american drinking that. It is poor wording, but if you take it literally, it says that only 167 were consumed. CLEARLY, this is not the case, which is why this is a fail. A poor wording fail, but a fail nonetheless!

        • other says:

It could also be read as Americans drank 167 billion bottles of water in that year as a whole. Which would make it a total math fail.

  2. Oh Naaah says:

Good thing I only drink beer, not really.

  3. Hitlet says:

    inb3first

  4. Hitlet says:

    inb4first

  5. POB 2.0 says:

I guess that’s why they’re factoids and not full-fledged facts.

  6. Czuhc says:

It’s reassuring that still 34 billion went to landfills. It could have been worse.

  7. Gleb says:

    Eh…
    I don’t get it.

    • Hi says:

      /facepalm

      • Gleb says:

I wish there was a decent fail pic, like “Error: Succes”.
        I don’t get this one.
This comment will become a fail pic won’t it?

        • Hasabrain says:

Well famously 34 billion is a bigger number than 167 (of which the 34 billion is suppodly a percentage of). But I think we can all assume the creator of the sign intended ‘167′ to read ‘167 billion’.

And no, 34 billion isn’t 68% of 167 billion, but then there are other things that can happen to a plastic bottle other than be piled into a landfil or recycled. I imagine many are re-used for example.

          • Scythelord says:

That’s where you’re wrong. The factoid is only slightly misworded. it’s 167 per US citizen. A conservative estimate of US population is 300,000,000. 167 x 300,000,000 = 50,100,000,000 x .68 = 34,068,000,000 which fits the figure in the factoid.

        • black hole says:

How can you not get it?

Then tell me, how can you sell 167 bottles, and end up with 34 billion bottles on a land fill?

where did the remaining 33,999,999,833 bottles come from?

    • Cyrus says:

the fail is about americans going to landfills. that’s ecologically wrong!

  8. Sayuri says:

So many fails right there. SO. MANY.

  9. Kavatah says:

The only fail I can see in this one is that they just forgot to mention that it was 167 plastic bottles of water for each americans …
    That makes :
    305 683 227 Americans
    167 bottles
    51 049 098 909 bottles in 2006
    32% recycled = 68% in Landfills
    51 049 098 909*68/100=34 713 387 258 bottles in Landfills …

Oh yeah !! you’re right … they failed in the 34 billions … It’s more like 35 :) or anyone could point out the fail you’re all laughing about ?

    • Cyrus says:

can i use the ET finger for that? :D

    • Hasabrain says:

Nope. There are other things that can happen to a plastic bottle other than it be recycled or end up in a land fill.

it could be incinerated, or re-used; for example. The fail here is a typo, not a maths issue. I assume its supposed to read either ‘167 billion’, or yes ‘167 bottles per american’.

    • Phlip says:

It comes to 34M if you just use a round 300M for the population. Most likely they used the round figures of 300M population and 50G bottles… which comes to 166 2/3 bottles each (rounds to 167) and 34M bottles exactly (if the 68% is exact).

But still, it’s still a fail that they didn’t include the word “each”. And the grammar is still shaky in general (I don’t think they drank that many plastic bottles… the contents of those bottles, maybe).

  10. Captain Atom says:

How do you recycle an American?

  11. ugyoigyfugy says:

    First

  12. InfiniteMonkey says:

    Triple fail:
    - Factoid fail
    - Holding camera straight fail
    - Focussing fail

  13. Aja says:

    It’s a miracle!

  14. Fernando1128 says:

Wow you guys are retarded. If it were “America drank” or “all Americans combined drank” then yes, this would be incorrect. “Americans” is inherently equivalent to “each American” or “every American.” It should be obvious to anyone who isn’t a moron that this is an average. The FAIL goes to the person that submitted this and every one of you idiots that thinks this is a fail.

  15. capt. awesome says:

Anpu mourns the state of America’s education system and its apparent inability to proofread.

  16. Denny Crane says:

This is why I’m proud to be an Australian.

  17. VishBoy says:

Now I know why they say American education is good!! :P

I’m proud to be an Indian!!!

  18. Rachel says:

    Dayam!
That means 53 bottles were recycled, and 339,99,999,886 bottles were thrown away without being drank.
I think this board’s message is loud and clear: Tap water in a bottle is just as nasty as tap water from the tap.

No wonder people drink so much soda these days….

  19. Fabmeister says:

I don’t get it. Isn’t it correct. The Americans (app. 300 Million) drank each 167 bottles of water = 50 Bill. bottles of Water. 32% were recycelt so 34 Bill. went to landfills. Where is the fail?

  20. Ravenite says:

I do believe the major fail is in that picture. Jesus. What crap focus.

  21. The Moomin says:

If you look in the bottom right, the true fail becomes revealed.
A midget with white paint on his feet tried to walk up the sign but failed and fell down.

  22. šWε└∟ ƒ∞þ says:

Drinking bottled water may cause your vision to blur.

    • evan...if he only had a brain ♫ says:

      *squeeze!* Brilliant!
Like so many darn posts I don’t want to bend,
By placing my stoopid two cents at the end.
So many of yours are precious and bold,
They shouldn’t be left alone to grow old.

  23. Alexander says:

Okay… So, let me work the problem.

We of course assume that they meant 167 Billion bottles. That is roughly 18 bottles per person, on the entire planet. Reasonable figure, considering that places like NY, USA is going to have more plastic bottles used than Africa. So it works so far…

Of those 167 Billion, 32% got recycled (which I think is a lie–I think it is more likely 10%) which according to math which I learned in 2nd grade, would be just over 50 Billion bottles that were recycled. Leaving a whopping 100 Billion that did go into the landfill.

There is nothing mathmatically or grammitically correct about this sign. It is indeed 100% fail. That is the only thing about it that is correct.

    • Plus, you don’t drink a plastic bottle of water, because that would mean that you are actually drinking the bottle, not the water inside.
It should read “drank 167 bottles of water, which are made of plastic”

    • Mathew says:

No it would be correct.. 34 billion.. (16 billion are recycled).. The Sign isn’t a fail!! This is a failblog FAIL!!! just worded a little strang but makes sence 100%..

I’ll help you with the math: the sign reads 167 bottles (per person)!!! 300 million americans in 2006.. is a total of 50 billion bottles. 32% of 50 billion is approx 16 billion that are recycled leaving you with… Thats right! 34 billion that are wasted.. no fail at all.

  24. Matthew says:

Love that the people who vote on this site voted it “thumbs down” because they didn’t understand the math themselves. Morons…

  25. whatnao says:

Mathematically speaking, this is NOT FAIL at all. But I didn’t do any research as to how many bottles of water Americans drink or how much of the bottles being recycled.

  26. IdoMath says:

    167 * 300.000.000 /3 *2 = 33.4 billion. It’s not a FAIL at all. Just 167 bottles p.p.

  27. Predictable says:

photographer FAIL! How on earth can you fail to take a sharp picture of a damn SIGN?

  28. JohnW says:

That looks like a Whole Foods sign… http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/

  29. mike says:

sorry, this is a fail fail

  30. Seriouslyguys? says:

This is not a fail…They obviously meant each American, or individual Americans each used 167 bottles of water. Estimating 300 million Americans, multiplied by 167 bottles each, equals 50,100,000,000, 32% of which is 16,032,000,000, leaving a remainder of about 34 billion. Whoever thought this was a fail is a moron

  31. kaFiend says:

I pity the future of America when you idiots can’t understand a basic word problem. I agree that there is something odd about this note…Perhaps it’d be better served on engrish but it is still true as pointed out by quite a few folks.

The population of America in 2006 of 289,44,215 people used on average 167 plastic water bottles. Of the totaling 49,840,183,905 water bottles used only 32% or 15,948,858,850 bottles were recycled. This means 33,891,325,055, or roughly 34 Billion, were tossed into land fills.

Fail blog this is your fail. I win.

    • Ms B says:

It’s still a fail. If they meant 167 bottles per person, that is what they should have said. Instead it says that 167 bottles were used, period. The fail is that the communicator failed to properly convey their meaning, it is not the reader’s responsibility to pick it out.

  32. Doh says:

The fail is in the grammar not the maths. For a start there aren’t 34 billion Americans available to go visiting landfills. Recycling Americans might sound like a good idea, but I doubt if it is legal. (Well it may be in the South ? )

  33. THAT’S OVER 9000!!!

  34. Puddi says:

No, the fail is that the picture is very poorly photoshopped. It was supposed to be a picture of a squirrel in a suit drier.

  35. MUFFINZ!!!:D says:

Wow, this fact has really opened my eyes to the importance of Recycling… and Choosing words carefully XD

  36. Ryan says:

This is still a fail, because the sign implies that 167 water bottles are consumed total, not per person.

  37. Emperor_Z says:

This isn’t a math fail, its a grammar and wording fail.

    1. The first part says that only 167 bottles of water were drunk by the entire country
    2. It then states that 32% of AMERICANS were recycled (SOYLENT GREEN IS PEOPLE!), and 34 billion went to landfills

If I wanted to be really picky, I could point out that the sign also uses percentages for one part of the statistic, and a normal number for the second, which is confusing and possibly incomplete, but that’s not as funny.

  38. Dolt says:

clearly at least 339999852.1616766467065 went to the landfill undrunk

  39. cjv mueller says:

in liberal land, this makes sense……..

  40. Michael says:

    The real problem is:
Americans drank 167 plastic bottles of water. The sign is talking about drinking plastic bottles, they just happen to be be water bottles.

  41. gfhjkgfhjkljgfdsghjkljhugtfhjkljhgfdghjkljgmfhghfjgfjhgtfjgjhgigjfgjndgjdjfdggjdfjsfguitysbgusipbj;jjqjnjnhghghj;tjkk;[;[['kpl'sjkfdgtghjbfcgtyhujbvcxdftghbvcxdfgthvbcfghjbvcfgtyhujbvcfghjbvfghbnvghjbvujhb says:

they make it sound like you drink the bottles……….

  42. Borste says:

The first fail that came to my mind is the word ‘americans’ meaning ‘citizens of USA’. There is actually about 900 million americans, counting the whole american continent.

  43. SeismicMike says:

HAHAHA…… This is like a double fail.

First, how do you drink a plastic bottle?

Second, since when is 68% of 167 = 34 billion?… For that matter, since when is 68% of 167 billion = 34 billion?

    LOL

  44. Mwahohoho says:

Hahahah, I’m pretty sure they meant 167 billion…But, man that’s hilarious.

  45. Hanii Puppy says:

Ignoring the first figure (not sure if they meant 167 billion or 167 bottles for every person), that works out at having every single american drinking at least 446 bottles of water every day

  46. Zhatt says:

You’ve got it all wrong. In 2006, 167 Americans drank plastic bottles. 32% of those Americans were recycled as well as 34 billion Americans ended up in the landfill.

  47. rebecca says:

    i dont get it..

  48. nacho 205 says:

    68% of 167 is 34 billion :/
