Actually, the Romans referred to Ireland as Hibernia. The Scoti was the Gælic tribe that went over to Scotland from Northern Ireland, giving their name to the country…but the sign is still not a FAIL.

The early medieval term for the inhabitants of modern-day Ireland was Scotti, hence people like John Scottus, “John the Irishman”. The reason for the confusion is when the Irish (more specifically the Ulster Irish) moved into what is now Scotland en masse, people called it “the land of the Irish” – Scotland.
And for an extra-nerdy cherry on top – the language spoken until around 900 in Scotland, Ireland, and Isle of Man was Early/Old Irish/Gaelic. Nowadays it has split into Irish, Scotch-Gaelic, Manx, and a bunch of regional dialects, but all those modern languages can be termed “Gaelic” in character.
