I don’t think this is that true. (Yes, it is true for some people.) However, USA-ers abbreviate their country as America. Would you have us say “I’m a United Stateser” or “I’m United States of American”? Saying “North American” doesn’t eliminate Canadians or Mexicans. We just use the term as our national adjective. Give us a break occasionally, please.
