they actually based this picture on that one episode of spongebob when they were on a treasure hunt. mr. crabs and spongebob made patrick in charge of holding the compas. they were supposed to go east. after walking for a long time, patrick said, “OHHHH, I THOUGHT WE WERE SUPPOSED TO GO WEEEST” so, thats prolly why they did that.

This isn’t a fail, its the way a compass is set up. A compass has east and west opposite how they are oriented in the real world because the needle only points north, thus, rotation 90 degrees counterclockwise in the real world you would face west, but the compass (if it matched the actual orientation) would have the needle point at east. Think about it

Or go buy a compass and check it out.

This was probably made in China, where Mah Jongg is extremely popular. This is how the “winds” (and seats) are arranged in Mah Jongg (I don’t know why). The graphic artist probably thought this was correct, being more familiar with Mah Jongg than with geography or a compass.

This is a compass. Look at a real compass sometime. Think about this for a moment. The needle always points North. If you are heading (or pointed) West, North is to the right of you. Hence West it is on the right on the compass.
