In an episode, Patric says “East, ohh, I thought you said ‘Weast’.” So, he thought there was an East to the Western direction, and a “Weast” to the Eastern direction.

Actually, that coordinate system is not entirely wrong. It just means that you’re looking at the surface of the Earth from beneath the surface of the Earth.
It works if you’re underwater, looking up at the underside of the map.

Actually the E and W are flipped on actual compasses. Compasses always point North, and if you turn to the right you are facing East so the E on the compass needs to be on the left side for that to work.
I don’t know how you use a compass, but I let the needle point to the “N” and have all the letters pointing in the right directions at once…
The lunchbox isn’t a compass. On any compass I’ve seen, E can be found clockwise from N, but here is little sense in Gaussing about it.

Actually, there is probably a compass with actual directions the front.
This is the back.
So if you were facing the front of it, and it was facing the right direction, it would be correct… and then if you walked around to the back, west and east would still be pointing in the right directions.
If West was on the left, then it would be on the right on the other side, giving us two different Wests… which wouldn’t be right.
So this is no fail. If anyone can understand what I’m saying.

Well…for those of us who HAVE used a map, we know that the symbol on that lunchbox is called a “compass rose”, which indicates the cardinal directions in relation to each other.
I’m pretty sure that when facing north, east is never going to be to my left.

This is a compass. Look at a real compass sometime. Think about this for a moment. The needle always points North. If you are heading (or pointed) West, North is to the right of you. Hence West it is on the right on the compass.

This was probably made in China, where Mah Jongg is extremely popular. This is how the “winds” (and seats) are arranged in Mah Jongg (I don’t know why). The graphic artist probably thought this was correct, being more familiar with Mah Jongg than with geography or a compass.

This isn’t a fail, its the way a compass is set up. A compass has east and west opposite how they are oriented in the real world because the needle only points north, thus, rotation 90 degrees counterclockwise in the real world you would face west, but the compass (if it matched the actual orientation) would have the needle point at east. Think about it
Or go buy a compass and check it out.
