Quite frankly, the billboard had it coming. It should have said “Please be polite.”
I felt the same about that sign. Be Polite is more of a harsh command than a polite request, but it could be more does as I say and not as I do.
The billboard had it coming for so many reasons… I totally would have written that “go #$%^ yourself” myself, although I might have added “please”.

Last time I looked billboards and the words upon them are FLAT! The visual angle the photo was taken is not sufficiently far enough off of perpendicular to allow you to perceive the perspective without careful measurement, but I assure you that the words do follow the “angle” of the the physical billboard. Thus, not a fake.

Not only do they have the “Be Polite” signs, but there are several other ones, including “Have a Nice Day”, all in the same ugly bulky font. I think Newman signs are to blame (http://www.newmansigns.com/index.html).

I have also seen the billboards. They are all over North Dakota. Some say Smile, Be Polite, and I believe Have a Nice Day. I’ve seen them in Fargo, Bismarck, Williston, Grand Forks. I am surprised its taken so long for this to happen to them.
This is NOT a fail, due to the words being spray painted on the board. The only way it would be a fail is if the board had been printed like that!
