I remember a sign somewhere pertaining to this issue that said “Don’t pick a fight with a heavyweight.”

That guy clearly should have tried to back up somehow. Going forward was stupid. That train went through the truck like it wasn’t even there!

What he should’ve done: Backed up through the guard rail (and report it to his trucking company or a cop).

What he did: made a judgment call…which turned out badly…for obvious reasons.

He could’ve also just stayed put. Was there a train on the other track? Well according to most state laws, it was his responsibility to know before going over them.

Not good. The driver could be seriously hurt, with a broken back or a hangman’s fracture (invariably fatal, but not likely.) If he wasn’t wearing a seat belt, he’d get to test the padding inside his cab up close.

take a look at the traffic out on the road before the train goes past.. that train is doing a good 50 or even 60mph… and yeah.. it aint stopping for a little orange truck..
anyone seen the movie ‘hancock’? he stops a freight train.. with predictable results..
way too much inertia, way too little time..
truck driver did the only thing available to him (once he put himself in that shitty situation), so credit there.. pity he’s probably still ‘out’ there.. somewhere… breading more just like himself probably.. *sigh*

That train would probably have taken a mile or two to stop at that speed.
Also a penny or tin foil CANNOT derail a train.

this seems more like a fail for the barrier timing… the truck was past the fisrt barrier when it came down, the driver saw the barrier for the other direction and tried to back up only to hit the barrier that dropped behind him… so he tried to get out of the way, but according to the timestamp there was only 15sec between the barrier drop and the train passing at about 20mph (guestimate math without being able to look at it frame by frame) the train couldn’t have been more than 400ft from the crossing.

Trucks aren’t easy to drive, though, either. You can see, after the back gate trapped him in, he tried to power across the tracks to get out of the way, but a semi just doesn’t have that much “get up ‘n go.”

All the crossings I’ve ever seen the lights and bells go off at the same time the gates begin to drop.
And there’s two tracks there. The gate on his side came down behind his cab. He made the right choice in trying to clear the tracks at that point. It’s hard to tell which track a train is on with two parallel tracks. Unfortunately, those gates did drop quite late.
