I apologize for sounding egg-headed and maybe waffling on the issue a little bit, but your point does really ring more truly than any other in this entire chain of comments. The main thing that people seem to miss in this chain is that the US government is actually pretty sound. Does it make every good choice it could possibly make? No, of course not. But for all of the people who have commented on the various wastes of money that politicians have made, lets stop and think momentarily about self-interest and government. The politicians that we as Americans elect every 2-4 years are human beings, and as such, will act as human beings do. In order to earn reelection, they pander to their constituents, which is where the "money wasting" comes in. Does it make our government irresponsible? No, it merely reaffirms that the people we elect to Congress are rationally self-interested human beings, just like every other person who has commented here. The biggest difference is that they are subject to constant public scrutiny. If every big decision we ever made was televised and talked about and scrutinized by every member of the American public, then most, if not all of us would probably have to be deemed irresponsible. The point here that I am trying to make is that lets take a moment to review all aspects of the situation before passing judgements and making blanket generalizations.
