  4. bDb says:

This is the least funny failpic I’ve ever seen.
    Failblog fail :(

    • Iridium says:

I agree, Whats funny about it?.

    • ronber says:

Help! I don’t see the joke.

      • xenu says:

        neither do i….understand fail

may because some of the sea food is on both sides of the point of expire

      • WC says:

The fail is supposed to be that grocery stores can’t sell products beyond their expiration date.

But this is obviously a thrift store, and not a grocery store and will sell out of date and/or damaged goods cheap. Since most items ‘out of date’ are actually still quite safe and tasty, and now cheap as well, this is another win and not a fail at all.

        • Adoni says:

I totally agree, the words Seafood+ Past expiration date sounds tasty as hell. A definite Gastrointestinal Fail

        • kris says:

I agree with that, it’s a win actually, since the store made a confession ’bout the expiration date. And for these instant noodles (seafood flavor) which I can see here, and some chips, nothing to be worried ’bout. Expired or not, the taste will be almost the same.

        • J says:

People who shop at thrift stores don’t win, that’s why they shop at thrift stores.

          • Glory says:

not true in all cases. sometimes you can find some very awesome stuff at a thrift store. its amazing what some people get rid of. if you can get a silk blouse with a designer label that looks new for $2 why would you be retarded and pay $75 for the same thing? Also shopping at a thrift store helps the environment. Even with getting it cleaned it will still be cheaper than buying it at the store.

            • kelti says:

i so totally agree! And shopping at thrifts often benefits charities. I regularly shop the local Goodwills and other thrift stores because you just never know what you might find. i get a lot of my ren faire feast ware from there as well. Once i found a set of 4 period pewter plates, the good ones, not the knockoffs, for like 50 cents a plate. If i had bought them new i would have had to pay about $15-20 a plate.

            • J says:

why would you buy a new one? BECAUSE OTHERWISE YOU ARE WEARING SECONDHAND CLOTHES!

              • Relly says:

Maybe because some people value savings more than their ego?
Maybe because they know it’s secondhand, but nobody else does?
If it’s not stained or totally worn out, it’s no different than if you had owned it the whole time… you must throw your clothes out after you wear them 2 or 3 times, right?

                • Glory says:

eh, J’s loss is the gain of every person with a brain in their head who shops thrift stores first before they look for something new. As long as all the people who get rid of their things after its been used once donate it to a thrift store/sale we don’t have a problem. let the idiots pay premium prices for designer labels, wear them once and then throw it in the donation box. Ill buy it for $1. AND NOONE BUT ME WILL EVER KNOW. New to me is just as good as new, only cheaper.

              • Glory says:

so ? you think the thing you pay extra to get new has never been worn? Let me ask you…did you try it on before you bought it? Do you think stores dryclean everything that has been tried on in the store? Unless you make it yourself, its been worn by someone else. thats why you CLEAN it.

    • WhatsFunny? says:

      Agree, Failblog FAIL
When you have to explain a FAIL, you FAIL to show the FAIL

      • Dragonwriter says:

You do realize, right, that the Fail Folks don’t just pic random pics to post on the main page? They pick the ones that the people voted for the most. So any time you say, “This isn’t funny”, there are a whole buncha people out there who disagree.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that. But the fail goes well beyond just the mods.

  5. kicker says:

  8. Mamaa Miaa says:

  9. Joel says:

Yum! expired seafood noodle soup. my favorite!

  10. Bo says:

I’m sorry to spoil the fun, but this really isn’t a fail. Stores do that you know: selling stuff that have passed the expiration date for less money. Well, here it’s illegal, but appearently not in every country.

    • izzyboy says:

Exactly what country is it NOT illegal to sell expired food in? Any store that does that in the US would get in serious trouble if caught. Generally to push items to sale before expiration they discount them right before they become expired.

      • ronber says:

It’s legal in Germany, if you mark the stuff as expired.

      • Tango says:

The UK. They have to be clearly marked (often as “out of code” rather than “out of date”, I wish I knew why), but selling them is legal.

      • TSR says:

While I didn’t submit this picture, I’ve been in that store. It’s in a mall like shopping center in the “Japan Town” section of San Francisco. I was there in late July of this year.

It’s a very small portion of the aisle. My wife and I both thought it was odd, but it is clearly marked that you would be buying expired food.

Basically everything for sale in there are items brought over from Japan; I’m sure geared towards Japanese living in the US who miss some of the items from home. Also, everything was priced pretty low, imo. Had the largest selection of Pocky I’ve ever seen in the US.

    • JP says:

Bo, which country or (if US) state do you live in? In the US, in most states, it is not illegal to sell expired food…specifically because it isn’t expired. Most stores interpret the “sell by” date as being the expiry date, which it is not. In fact, many foods are good for YEARS after the “expiry”, especially dried goods.

    Sounds like food poisoning

  12. frank says:

20th!!!!! Yea 20th! I am the coolest person in the world because I can… type and stuff.

  13. Jill says:

Well, you could also say it’s a fail because it says “point” and actually displays a pair of rays (with different end-points). Math fail!

  14. z0cker03 says:

    uhm.. good to know

  15. Etni says:

Yeah, when the expiration dates expire, some stores sell them cheaper instead of throwing them away. Usually there’s nothing wrong with the stuff if the expiration date is only a few days past, so nothing wrong and nothing fail about this pic, unless it happens to be illegal in the country where this is taken. Failblog trying too hard to be funny again.

  16. kekesvar says:

    i fail in seeing fail… everything´s alright i guess… pretty normal

  17. aNdreW says:

    tight ass WIN !

  18. Donnie Mac says:

Wait a minute. I thought noodles in a bowl never expired? Or at least that’s their excuse for giving you 12,000,000,000,000,000,000 grams of sodium in every bite.

  19. Aaron says:

I returned a bag of groceries accidentally taken off the shelf before the expiration date.

mmmm unrefrigerated seafood, and it’s only 50 cents. What a bargain.

  22. Edge says:

Me thinks someone hasn’t been in an asian food store before. This is quite common, though I don’t think I have ever seen a section for out-of-date.

  25. Buzz says:

I took this picture (or a very similar one). It is in japantown in SF.

    Buzz

  26. Anya says:

I don’t see how this is a fail at all.

A lot of stores in various countries will sell food past it’s expiration date at a huge discount. Considering most of the items for sale in this photo are noodles and chips, it’s incredibly unlikely that food poisoning would occur, rather they’re just going to be stale and a little less “fresh” tasting.

In the UK Tesco’s sells a lot of stuff that’s expired that is far more sketchy to eat. Like pizzas and meat products.

    NO FAIL! This sucks!

  27. Buttnuggets Galore says:

Why would anyone pay for expired food when they can get stuff hot out of the dumpster out back for free? Look, I found a pancake!!

  28. Boobner says:

Another reason this is not a fail is that the picture is from Ichiban Kan in Japantown, San Francisco, which is the best store evar.

  29. Ulti says:

Abandon hope, all ye who pass this pink sign.

  30. ghouck says:

  31. someone says:

    College student win!!!

  32. trollike says:

In Estonia (European Union), we have a difference between “best before” and “use by”. If a food item is labelled “best before”, then it is still edible, even though perhaps not the best any more, and it can be sold in the store if it is marked properly – for example, cereals, pasta, candies etc. If it, on the other hand, bears marking “use by” (e.g. dairy and meat products), then it is not allowed to be sold after the date on the package.

I’m quite sure it is an EU regulation or something.

  33. FoodBanker says:

Just like “Trollike” said above, it’s not *illegal* to sell past-date food in the US except for dairy and meat, and even that’s not illegal, it just tends to be really gross. Food Banks (like where I work) get dates from most food manufacturers near or past which their food products can still be safely consumed. For example, most cereals are edible up to a year after their “best by” date – maybe a little stale at 3 or 6 months, but still nutritious as long as it’s been stored properly. Things that are packed with salt and preservatives – dry or canned – can be stored almost indefinitely. The things to watch for in canned foods are more acidic things – tomato products especially – they tend to spoil more quickly.

“When in doubt, throw it out,” but if you use your nose and common sense, and there’d be a hell of a lot less waste of food and money in the US.

  34. Health Inspector Extraordinaire says:

Well I’m a Health Inspector in California. I can’t speak for the other states, as some laws differ from state to state, however it is absolutely NOT illegal to sell expired food products in California. We could discuss the finer points of ‘use by’ and ‘best before’ but it wouldn’t change anything in regards to the law. In fact there are facilities called food salvagers that specialize in such foods and sell them at a steep discount. Even dairy products are sold there, although I probably wouldn’t buy expired dairy foods. (Of course the dairy industry cares more about spoilage bacteria than anything that would actually make you sick, but that’s another story.) Many regular grocery stores removed expired products just because they know their customers will complain. Regardless, there is nothing that even says you cannot sell expired baby food, although where I work, it is common practice amongst the health inspectors to require vendors to discard expired baby products. As long as the labels are intact, there are no signs of bugs inside, and the package appears unadulterated and undamaged, just use common sense as to whether something seems safe to eat or not. Of course never use canned products if they seem swollen or the seams are rusty, and never use a jarred product if the vacuum seal isn’t intact. The food industry went for decades before dates were required on packages and I don’t think too many people ended up suffering over it. I agree with the person up above, I hate seeing the food wasted when people are going hungry. I have often driven through the countryside in Ag areas and seen whole fields covered with produce that the automatic harvesting machines left behind. You could live very well on such ‘leftovers’ if you knew where to go. I wonder if anyone is still bothering to read this thread? lol!
