  1. Disturbance says:

    weeeee, bump cars :D

    • duende says:

hahahaha cars and snow = good times!

      • asd says:

How do you like it when someone rams against your (perhaps parking) car? Rule of thumb is don’t drive when road are iced. Especially that first f!cking idiot who even tries to accelerate. That’s not funny as a fail anymore.

        • stingray02 says:

That’s what insurance is for. And if you don’t have insurance or don’t have enough, then it’s your own damn fault.
As for the moron who accelerated and went even more out of control? That was the best part of the damn video!

          Idiots + Driver’s Licenses = Pure Entertainment

          • Dan says:

how bout the moron holding the camera instead of holding a sign saying “slow down ice ahead?????? maybe those kids wouldnt have been in danger then?

          • Chewybunny says:

one can say: His lack of insurance is his own fail.

          • Desimo says:

It’s all because Seattle’s douche bag mayor won’t put de-icer on the roads because it is “bad for the environment.” Well I guess this is supposed to stimulate the economy because now body shops will get business, insurance agents will get business, it helps all around right? Freaking incompetent mayor. But they did get in front of his house.

            • Arthowse says:

What good would de-icer in Seattle do in this situation considering this video was filmed from the roof of an apartment building in SouthEast Portland, Oregon? Just wondering….get your facts straight before you post or risk looking like an ignorant fool

        • thepittfan says:

ok really? must you guys over-analyze this?? will u stop thinking ur soooooo clever and just enjoy the FAIL?

        • Eman says:

          Buzzkill fail.

        • binques says:

          Agreed – not funny.

        • NorwegianRallyDriver says:

I agree with asd. The first daft dud that tries to drive, already failed when he woke up that morning. the 2nd guy who tries to drive, make’s a bigger fail, since he saw what happend with the first car, and so on.
If they drove on summer-tires, the hole city failed. Damn city slickers.
If they drove on winter-tires, the people at city hall failed. Damn capitalist’s.

Total disregard for they’re own and other cars, but still it’s funny.

          NRD
          FTW

        • SickFak says:

maybe u were one of them???

      • Xtibet says:

        HEADLINE FAIL:

        it’s ice, not snow

    • Brandon_ha says:

Ah man this would never happen in Canada.

      • Vancouverite says:

Ever been to Vancouver? It’s worse! lol

        • The President says:

I think this was in Vancouver (standing in the YouTube comments).
People should know that they shouldn’t take the car for an adventure like this…

          • m says:

actually, I think it’s Portland (OR) from last winter.

            • boolean says:

Actually, it’s from Portland AND from last winter.

            • Lethal Larry says:

Yeah, I think K5′s an american station.

              • Adam says:

King 5 Is a Seattle WA station. But they are part of the Northwest Cable News Network. So they got this clip from Portland. I remember watching it and footage from Seattle . It was priceless.

Few in the NW can drive in the snow. And we who fear them stay home and watch the news.

                • TabascosGirl says:

King5 is Seattle, for sure! And NW drivers cannot, repeat, cannot drive inthe snow

                  • Reupbert says:

LOL this was definitely on K5 news in Seattle about Portland. Awesome.

                  • MachineShedFred says:

This was in Northwest Portland, on Salmon St., west of Downtown. And yes, the snow melted a bit and then we had a hard freeze. No one with any brains was driving anywhere – the entire metro area was shut down for about three days.

I was lucky enough to have a roommate from Montana, with a rock crawler rig for a vehicle. He just turned on both transfer cases and crawled wherever we needed to go.

                    Torque FTW.

                    • Andrew says:

Both transfer cases? Don’t you mean both drive axles? I’ve never seen anthing that had two transfer cases, the transfer case is what allows the transmission to transfer power to the rear axle as well as the front axle…

But I agree, most people here don’t know how to drive in the snow, I was out in that storm in my SVX yankin cars out of the ditches until it got too deep, then I went home and got my full size diesel Dodge. The problem here is the people that think that having 4WD means you can drive in any condition as if you were driving on dry pavement, which is most certainly not the case….

                  • t_dot says:

We drive on ice a hundred times a winter, I do it for 100km per day.
We are just used to it… and used to summer driving….and spring, and fall… .

So don’t assume you can’t drive on ice just because YOU can’t.

                • Jake says:

Oh, dear Lord. And I moved from the Southeast to the Northwest.
Even people down South have more sense than to drive in weather like this.
(Comes from having nothing BUT icy snow, I guess.)

Any idea what part of Portland this is in? (Downtown, I’m guessing?) I’d like to avoid living there.

                  • Ane Krel says:

I believe this was taken in downtown Portland near Portland State. It’s on the South Park Blocks near SW Jackson and Park.

If I recall, none of the area forecasters had predicted this to happen. It started during the morning when this video was shot, and it didn’t take long for the layer of ice that’s on the road to build up.

            • Nichole says:

King 5 news is Seattle. I live just south of Seattle and trust me, Seattle drivers can barely drive in great conditions, are confused when it rains and are S.O.L when it snows.

              • coyote says:

It seems your car has an extra dipstick. You. We are great at driving in the rain. Oodles of practice. The useless ones are those from a certain state to the south that shall remain nameless here. The snow side is somewhat true for a few reasons. One: we don’t get snow often. Two: since we get so little snow there is a small budget for snow removal. Three: since the moisture is fresh off of the ocean it produces a snow with a high moisture content. Meaning it is not fluffy. It is grease. As a guess I would say that you are not a native. Ever think emigrating again?

                • Seattle-ite says:

Also, there’s our lovely selection of hills to consider. It’s funny watching people who come from flat areas who say they’re snow driving “experts” flounder when they try to drive up or down one of our snow-covered hills…

                • Ralf says:

Sounds like someone’s making excuses for the entire Northwest being one big driving fail.

                  • Alex says:

The NW is one big driving fail when it comes to snow. It’s hilarious.
Every winter we get to see a video of a car spiraling down a big hill
because someone failed too much to stay home.

                • this guy over here says:

Um, Seattle drivers are NOT great in driving in the rain. Everyone drives at least 5-10 mph under the speed limit in zero traffic to begin with, and when it rains everyone slows down more. Combine that with this amazing phenomenon of an entire region of a country NOT knowing how to merge onto a freeway, and nearly every drizzle that occurs around 5 p.m. on a weekday turns my 30 minute commute into a 70+ minute road trip.

So the logic says you SHOULD be good at driving in the rain, but the evidence shows otherwise. And it’s not even that much rain; try driving in a storm that the rain comes down so hard your wipers can’t keep up, and you wouldn’t even be able to see 15 feet in front of you if they could.

                • xrae says:

Grease? There’s something in your atmosphere, or maybe the salty water doing this. I’ve lived in Iowa most of my life and we get plenty of snow every year, some super dry, some wet as hell. And I’ve never seen any snow that was the least bit greasy. Unless you pour oil on it or something.

            • Alright sea-town says:

No, this was in Seattle. King 5 news is from there. This is also what happens to Seattlites when there’s a half-inch of snow on the ground. You’d think with all the rain we get we wouldn’t suck so much at snow driving.

            • Yes Portland says:

This was in Portland but the best part of the video is missing when the fire truck gets nailed by another car.

            • The Home Team says:

Definitely Portland, Seattle, or Vancouver. King 5 is one of Seattle’s local tv stations.

            • kajer-a-der says:

              its was in Seattle washington

            • klik says:

this is actually seattle. King 5 is one of their news stations. and i actually remember seeing this a couple of years ago when I lived there. I think it was Federal Way

            • Nerissarain says:

This is from Portland Oregon, winter 2007. I was there, it was all over the news at that point — the road is a pretty steep slant, and there isn’t often snow in that area (to help justify a little bit!) and no one got hurt — pretty amazing.

              • Danni says:

                Oregon drivers = fail.

Why would you attempt to drive in the snow when you (quite blatantly) don’t know how? I have lived in New England my whole life, know how to drive in a foot of snow (non-plowed) and even I don’t go out in the snow unless I have to go to work.

Maybe some of these people had to go to work… but that still doesn’t excuse that idiotic woman for taking her kids out in that weather.

            • m2 says:

The news station is from Seattle, Washington. Those drivers are really bad, I am glad I live somewhere where people can kinda drive in the snow.

            • Colin says:

WTF?!? Why can’t people drive in snow; that was nothing I live in Northern Michigan

          • JJ says:

It’s Seattle bud. It’s right by my house, and it’s a pretty large hill. Anyhow, Seattle
and Vancouver don’t get a lot of snow so when it does snow, this is what happens.

            • PDX-dude says:

Sorry bub, this was in portland at SW Salmon and SW 20th Ave. My GF’s apartment is very close to there. Look at the google maps street view: http://preview.tinyurl.com/6d9omx

I was up the hill while this was happening. The roads had a 1/2″ of ice on them under the snow. It wasn’t walkable much less drive-able. I grew up in Colorado and I know how to drive on snow. I also know when to stay home, and this was one of those days…

      • Mephiles says:

Or Britain! :p Since when do we British get snow, especially in the North West of England.

        • Apache says:

Chester has it’s own microclimate, even if it’s snowing all over the UK, it won’t be in Chester.

          • Sponge says:

or Swindon, the whole town’s surrounded by high hills that save us from the worst of the weather (or best if it’s snow)

          • Liz says:

I was in Chester, England for Easter in March …lots of snow…wet, rainy snow…and people driving on the wrong side of the road. England for Spring break was to avoid snow…I was hoping for the global warming I keep hearing about…

          • :D says:

hey, same as memphis – something to do with being on the bluff and by a river, i dunno, but we never seem to get hit as badly by major storm systems and we get about one snow per year (deepest in the past decade was four inches) even if the rest of Tennessee is covered in it.

        • Schneewitchen says:

Depends where you live. In the higher parts of Northumberland, we used to get this kind of stuff every midwinter. Occasionally, the forded river at the bottom of our *very* steep road used to freeze over. Every so often I used to have to tow our milkman’s truck up the road with our shitty old V8 Range Rover, on a glassy, iced, surface just like this. Every so often, we were snowed in, 4-wheel drive or not. We also had a Volvo, which although rear-wheel-drive, coped well with these kinds of conditions. It was equipped with and electronically-controlled limited slip diff, and ABS.

We saw regular minus 10s and 12s (Celsius), and we had to carry our dog sometimes because his paws would hurt too much when it got *really* cold.

We lived in Sinderhope, 1100ft above sea level, 30 miles south of Scotland.

      • jordanwb says:

Never happen in Canada? You’re an idiot. Here in Ottawa our buses don’t have snow tires, and the extended buses turn into bumper buses on some hills because the tires on the trailer are powered by the engine.

        • durr says:

i think he might have been sarcastic–at least i hope he was sarcastic.
aaah oc transpo, nothing more fun than doing 50 into Hurdman.

        • Rina says:

I think he was talking aboot how Canadian’s know how to drive in snow. Here in the North East of the US we don’t have any problems like this. We just know how to drive on the snow. And enough sense to know that sometimes it’s better to just stay home

        • Emma says:

I’m calling a fail on Ottawa for that one. Southwestern Ontario knows that snow tires are where it’s at.

      • Molly says:

This happened in Portland, they have no idea how to drive in snow here.

        • bob51 says:

lulz Would never happen in quebec is more like it , no snow tires = fine here

        • Paula B says:

Ah ha! That makes sense. We got that same snow storm down here in Eugene. I knew better than tto brave the streets with people who don’t know how to drive in the snow!

          • Malfeasant says:

There comes a point when it’s not so much about knowing how to drive in the snow, but knowing when not to drive in the snow. This was more than just snow, I think freezing rain and therefore ice were the bigger problem. Snow by itself just isn’t that slick.

            • Shadow says:

Agreed, my first thought was “why are they even trying” then I realized it wasnt Midwesterners that KNOW how to drive in ice and snow.

The fail is in the street department not doing something sooner.

Bigger fail is not watching a fire truck slide bumper car style down the hill too.

              • Buggs says:

I’m from the MW and if I owned a car on that street I’d be out there driving/pushing it off the road at the very least. Splash damage from other idiot drivers . . . nothxkbai

        • Eric says:

My question is: why the hell did I hear that first guy gunning it? If you’re sliding like that, you stay on the brakes. There is really never a situation where you should accelerate while sliding on ice. Maybe on gravel or a dry surface, but acceleration on ice makes for a damage score of OVER 9000!

        • seatown rep says:

NOPE. KING 5 IS SEATTLE. THIS IS PROBABLY ON 1ST HILL, DOWNTOWN,
BUT I’M NOT ENTIRELY SURE. AWESOME TO WATCH THIS RIGHT AFTER DRIVING AROUND ALL DAY IN A FEW INCHES OF SNOW.. DIDN’T SEE ANYTHING QUITE THIS COOL THO.

      • Reik says:

are all canadians this high and mighty about their precious canada? most i’ve met are?

      • appye says:

Perhaps if they chained up their tires? I dunno. I live in Los Angeles, and we never have this problem!

      • binques says:

Nor in Wisconsin, unless the drivers were out-of-towners.

      • qballvet says:

It would never happen in Los Angeles, either.

No, I’m lying. We don’t even need snow for it to get like this in LA.

      • Triky says:

man… I live near aspen… we get some idiot tourists who basically drive like that… I hope that i am not on the same insurance program paying for stupid stupid mistakes like those, (the people)… I was going down this hill once in a blizzard and there was a truck in front of me, ended up going through the corner at the bottom of the hill backwards, was on the side of a cliff up in the mountains, never broke a sweat ;-)

      • darkf0x says:

        It would in Tennessee.

      • radraderson says:

I live in Alaska. We get snow and ice every year. People get studded tires and drive slower. Not really that complicated right?
I really love the car sliding sideways down the street. “shitshitshitshit!”

    • Chris says:

Wasn’t this in Portland a year or so ago? I remember it flash snowed the roads cleared out. No one had chains on and everyone started flying around the road…

      • Bananaphone says:

Nope, King 5 is in King County, WA. But Portland probably had the same problem.

        • jakmcbane says:

King 5 is indeed in king county washington, but I believe the footage was indeed shot in portland. The video was merely aired in seattle.

        • Chrome_CW says:

While you are correct that King 5 is in Seattle(where I live now), this video was actually from Portland(where I grew up) as Chris indicated – from what I remember about the story this was filmed form the top of one of the buildings near Civic Stadium – what is NOT clear from the angle of the video is the slope these cars are on – for those of you not familiar with this area, these cars are sliding down a very steep grade, and what you can’t see is that there is a pretty good layer of ICE underneath the snow.

          • SUOMYNONA says:

I was wondering why they were just sliding around. Makes sense now.

          • BrightEyes says:

Do they have salt trucks in Portland, or do they not get enough snow/ice to justify it? I know in Dallas they just have sand trucks, which don’t do much of anything when you get the ice layers down and then a dusting of snow over it.

            Hopefully no one was hurt.

            • Paula B says:

I don’t think they do. Western Oregon doesn’t get much snow. I’ve lived here since 1990 and this was the first snowstorm I’ve seen that had snow on the ground for more than a day. (I’m in Eugene, about 2 hours south of Portland)

              • Bud says:

Thats a storm….theres like 2 inches of snow. One Saturday last winter we got 3,8 feet THATS a snow storm. This is just a snow-ing =).
                Vive le Québec eneigé.

                • Paula B says:

LOL – yep, 2 inches is a snow storm for us, (though on my mountain we had 2 ft drifts, and were stuck for a few days.

Oregonians: we’ll still drive competently when the road is under a foot and a half of water, but put a few inches of snow down and everyone loses their marbles.

            • Wheeee says:

I dunno about salt trucks but they did get crews out there salting the road soon after this, they just didn’t have time to get out there before the roads turned into ping pong tables.

        • Divamatrix says:

Actually that’s not Seattle. That is Portland.. I remember when it happened and it was all over the news. It was just rebroadcast in Seattle.

          There’s all the details. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMzeiMJQrvk

        • SomeGuy says:

King 5′s broadcast is seen well into Oregon. It is one of the 2 NBC stations I get in the Portland area. I got the broadcast of King 5 via Charter when I lived on the Oregon coast…

      • Dan says:

Dunno if this was actually filmed in Portland or not, but I got it via email from a friend who lives in Portland, over a year ago. It’s good film, but sad that they couldn’t come up with anything more recent to post.

      • Another Chris says:

Indeed it was. I actually know the driver of the second car in the clip. The car belonged to his mom.

    • ntac says:

Cars can drive sideways now!? WIN!

      • Katz says:

Yeah I noticed that one accelerating sideways. must be some slope. on this kind of ice (underneath the wet snow) it doesn’t really matter if it’s steep. only a tank wouldn’t lose control.

    • Chintapop says:

This happened in seattle, thats where K5 (King 5) news is.

    • Welson Oells says:

Snow driving skills have nothing to do with it…
It was a classic Portland Oregon Ice Storm. There was solid glare ice on the streets under the snow… made for disaster when coupled with a significant hill.

Once drivers started down the grade… it was all over.

    • jake says:

Why aren’t the roads closed lol!! Thats crazy!!

    • Sanjuro the BAMF says:

The Slow and The Furious: Anchorage Drift.

    • nincanta says:

lol then the fiure truck comes and dies omg

    • Choybo1 says:

ahahahhahaha the only car that was able to navigate was the expensive car (BMW at the end) I guess more money really does get you a better item xD

    • bill says:

Where was this? Atlanta? obviously a hill.. but wow.. that many insane inexperienced drivers all in one place… had to be somewhere that snow/ice is a rarity.
That first guy just had to be trying to total the car for the insurance.

  2. Mr. Man says:

Wow, is that guy seriously retarded? When did mentally handicapped people start getting licenses?

    • Sara J says:

You’re right, only retarded people are capable of sliding on ice and snow.

      • Name name says:

No, only retarded people actually think they can safely drive in weather like this.

        • Fan says:

Eh-heh. If you’re stuck at work and need to get home for whatever reason, it’s amazing what kind of weather you’ll drive through. I live in Ohio, and a couple of winters ago, it dropped two feet of snow on us while we were working. It took about five hours just to get up the hill and onto the highway with all of the people, cars, and accidents.

          • munchkickin says:

Oh yea i remember that. It was either freeze in my store (everything was shut off) or drive home and have heat. It was scarier going up the ramps than down them lol

          • DaftPyramid says:

Yeah, Michigan usually sees at least one horrific snow storm like that per winter. This last winter, I happened to be driving 30 miles in it. Things like that make me glad I own a Jeep, even if it does get bad mileage.

    • Jack says:

Notice what’s actually happening in the video. This is just extremely bad weather (the car never achieves a high speed but still loses control…on a hill).

      • Bud says:

This is not extremely bad weather, this is extremely bad driving. =)

        • Delphi says:

Why can’t it be a combo of both? I’ve driven in worse ice/snow conditions than this, and yes: when there’s ice, you slide. You just have to compensate by driving more slowly, not locking your brakes, and refraining from wildly spinning your steering wheel. I understand there’s a hill complicating things, but this just looks like panic and inexperience put together.

          • Bud says:

It can’t be both because it’s just a little snow and ice. This is really driver FAIL not weather FAIL.

            • hvm says:

I dunno, considering all of them have problems it might be too hard to drive in that weather whatever your experience. Of course, a sane person would have those chains that you put on wheels to increase your adherence to the ground. Especially if they live in a city with winters like that.

sadly, the insurance companies always win. If it’s your fault, they raise your premium. If it’s someone else’s fault, the other guy’s insurer pays yours, and then raises his premium. If the other guy doesn’t have insurance, they sue him personally, if he’s got anything they take it, if he doesn’t, his wages will be garnished until they’re happy… If they get nothing, they raise everybody’s premiums. Insurance companies don’t like to lose.

  10. Bobby says:

lol I lived outside of Seattle at the time this video was taken. It was all over the local news. It had poured ass rain the day/evening before, and then stopped, and the temperature dropped and it froze into glare ice, then started to snow.

Sadly, Seattle natives can’t even drive in the rain…and don’t have the common sense to stay the hell home, much less to put studded snow tires or chains on their cars before leaving in that kind of weather.

    • Bananaphone says:

Hey! I live near Seattle too you know, and………no, wait…..never mind, Bobby”s right. We can’t drive in the rain. :)

      • Dragonwriter says:

But…but doesn’t it rain ALL THE TIME up there??

*note to self…cancel plans to move to Seattle*

        • drb says:

Heh. People in Los Angeles who were originally from Seattle or Portland are always bragging that THEY know how to drive in the rain, and it’s just those stupid Southern California natives who don’t know how to drive in even a light sprinkle who cause all the crashes. Mind you, one of the ones I knew from the Pacific Northwest who was talking trash managed to skid into a tree in a light sprinkle the next November. I guess it was a stupid Southern California tree that didn’t know how to avoid Portlanders in the rain.

    • Kimberly says:

Chains are illegal in Michigan. I suppose with the amount of lake effect snow we get they figure we should know how to drive in it without them. They don’t exactly help our epic pothole problem either.

      • BrightEyes says:

Agree on the “standing in the middle of the road” comment. DUH!

The other big fail is the first driver – it sounds like he guns the engine after he hits the telephone pole in order to make the turn, instead of having the brains to go “Yay! I’m stopped!” and calling it a day.

      • DaftPyramid says:

Where in MI are you, if you don’t mind me asking?

Judging by the fact it got there undented (as far as I can tell), it would probably resist sliding. On the other hand, the law of inertia means that once it gets sliding, it’d be harder to stop.

If that happens, I hope there’s a sequel showing its trip down the hill.

    • gus_webb says:

    • sandy says:

it’s called the pacific northwest. it snows here maybe twice a year and it just isn’t worthwhile to put on studded tires (which ruin the roads on the days which aren’t snowy–all 99.999% of them). i just don’t understand why we don’t just take it in stride and take the day off since it only happens two days a year.

    • scharvey says:

Studded tires? I live in Iowa where is snows a whole hell of a lot and nobody has “studded tires” or chains.

      • gumby says:

Iowa with all the steep hills and twisty roads, right?

        • BrightEyes says:

Ever been in eastern Iowa near the Mississippi River? Yes, Iowa with all the steep hills and twisty roads – it’s not all cornfield.

          • jason says:

I used to live in Burlington, Iowa. What part are you from?

          • Malfeasant says:

I bought a car in Colorado that had studded tires, they’re great. You may be able to do w/o them in eastern Iowa, but they (or chains) are actually required on many roads in the Rockies. I drove that car back to Boston, and I intended to take the studded tires off, but it slipped my mind. When I arrived in Boston, it was cold and icy. It was early morning, and I was rather groggy, so I didn’t notice how icy it was, when a cop pulled me over for “speeding”, I was only going 25 or so, and it was probably a 30 zone, but he cited road conditions as the reason why it was speeding. I gave him a blank look, like “what road conditions?”. He said, “Do you have any idea how slick this road is?” I opened my door and put my foot out, sure enough it was a sheet of ice. So I told him I hadn’t noticed, my studded tires hold the road quite well. “Well, those are illegal here.” In the end he left the tires off the ticket, but he got me for speeding, the cracked windshield, loud muffler… and a suspended license :D

          • mariposita says:

They also plow, sand and salt in Iowa, something they don’t do in Portland.

      • cara says:

I live in alaska, and everyone uses studded tires (“studs”) in the winter.

  23. Evil Psychiatrist says:

I remember this. There are still tire tracks in the ditch at the intersection of I-405/WA-167 where people tried to drive around the massive pileup caused by sliding cars…and then got stuck in the ditch.

I was raised in Alaska, so watching people failing to drive in the snow fills me with a very special kind of glee. Mmm…schadenfreude.

  24. Nils owner says:

Snowplow fail? ice on the road couse the plower failed att his job.

Not so much. This is in Portland OR. They don’t believe in snowplows there.

    • Devin says:

It’s Seattle, there’s probably only like 2 snow plows.

On another note, anyone else find the Tag cloud at right kind of a fail of it’s own?

    • DaftPyramid says:

Even if there were plows in the area, they couldn’t have helped much with such a thick layer of ice.

  27. david says:

everyone knows when you start sliding, just slam down on the breaks and don’t let go at all costs. especially effective while sideways.

    • malcolm says:

Advice and spelling: fail. Slamming the brakes while sliding will remove any chance of recovering from the slide, and instead almost assure you of having an accident. Instead, you should look and steer where you want to go, and lightly apply the gas/throttle (not floor it). This will stabilize the car and usually correct the slide.

Ice like this is nearly impossible to drive on. Snow tires make it slightly better, but still not great. Studs would make it much better, but they are illegal in most parts of North America.

The first driver was clearly trying to destroy everything in his or her path. No idea why though…

    • malcolm says:

Advice and spelling: FAIL. Slamming the BRAKES will only ever erase almost all chances of recovering from the slide.

Good advice: when sliding, look and steer where you want to go, and lightly apply the throttle. This will stabilize the car and will usually steer it out of the slide.

    • rob says:

youve never had a car without abs have you?

  28. corey says:

This always happens in seattle when it snows. Keep in mind that it only snows one or two days a year, so when it does people don’t understand how to deal with it and slide their cars down hills. The news keeps cameras pointed around any hilly streets anticipating this kind of thing.

    • Elvira says:

That’s so thoughtful of them! LOL

    • Sammie says:

At least you have a good excuse for it in Seattle. This happens just about ANYWHERE it snows (I live in PA), and it doesn’t matter how much or how often, people still think that the snow is only slippery for everyone else. Idiots.

  29. dude says:

    • Ama says:

Lol, I was humming that same tune through it. I normally hate the Nutcracker, but it just felt too fitting.

Being from Colorado, I know how to drive hills in snow. I remember when I was a teenager, my mom took me out on a snowy night to the high school parking lot to teach me how to “snow drive” or rather how to drift and do doughnuts on snow. Theory being if I could do such tricks on snow, I could logicly avoid doing them on accident in the street.

But yeah, never drive in Downtown Denver in the snow…it sucks. Traversing the incline of capitol hill from a red light at the bottom is as hair-raising as anything.

Why is nobody using chains on their tires! These are the reasons why they make those chains!

    • ozymandias says:

Why would you use chains on you tires? If you lived in a part of the country that would make chains or studs reasonable, then you know how to drive, and thus would not need studs or chains.

    • gasman's sidekick says:

To drive them in deep snow. Barely covered streets are not made for chains. You use tires with a softer rubber mix. They will not keep you from sliding but give you more grip.

    • Aleese says:

They were all on their way to the chain and studded tire store.

    • Paula B says:

Because they wanted to return them at the end of the season for a full refund.

No shit. I live in Eugene, OR and most people get chains for going skiing. The local tire centers have this deal where you can buy chains, but if you don’t use them you can return them for a full refund in the spring.

This compounds the hilarity, because when people finally break down and get the chains out, they can’t figure out how to put them on. Or they put them on the wrong wheels.

Oh, Oregon. You so crazy. Don’t ever change.

    • hello says:

  66. choobeegoo says:

It wouldn’t be a bad idea to just keep these cars in the condition they’re in for the next time some idiots need to go for a slide. Keep your “good” car in the garage or find a nice gated parking lot for the winter….

You gotta admit that if it weren’t for the bumper car factor, it’d be a hell of a lot of fun.

  68. wheelman says:

After laughing out loud at the first one, it soon became sad as people just kept trying… Really, what makes a person think that their minivan or suv is so much better at handling to attempt driving in conditions like that.
But that first one was hilarious. I thought the vehicle was stolen at first.

  70. Angie T says:

With that having been said, trying to drive in those conditions = huge fail.

  73. crunch says:

  74. ghhg says:

Haha, fools! Its like the dumb people we have in the northeast. you’ve lived here all your life, it snows like crazy every year, but yet every storm YOU DRIVE LIKE YOU’VE NEVER SEEN THIS WHITE SHIT FALLING FROM THE SKY!

  75. Shadow Link says:

I can’t help but think I could pull off the sweetest moonwalk ever on those streets…

  76. MirrorCat21 says:

LOL…Everybody should be required to pass their drivers test in MI/WI/MN SOMEWHERE…during winter conditions. Then they would #1. Know how to drive in the snow and ice. #2. Know when to stay the h3ll home!!! Nothing teaches winter driving like doughnuts in a parking lot! (I love the sideways slide!)

  77. lineuptoeatme says:

Whether or not this particular video was filmed in Portland, this also happened in Seattle. I watched it happen from my office building (73rd floor of the Columbia Tower, between 4th and 5th Avenues and Columbia and Cherry. Cars were sliding down Madison and James from the top of Capital Hill (from Boren or 9th) all the way down to 1st Avenue, which is close to the waterfront.

I had driven to work the night before (I was working overnights), and ended up stranded in the office building for 3 days. It was either stay at the office or slide down the hill like the rest of the fools.

I believe it was in 2002.

What they fail to mention in the video is, Seattle drivers are like this even when it isn’t snowing.

  78. Djinnyeh says:

This is why I have snow tires. Mind you, when I drove to work during the worst blizzard in 5 yrs, I didn’t have them…

Ya know, I understand losing control on ice, but what’s with that first driver that could not lay off the gas? Yes, making your tires go faster while skidding will help… yeah.. and I got a bridge to sell ya, too.

    • waffle says:

My dad didn’t get that concept either when I was 9 and our up-hill-going-out driveway was iced over. “No dad, don’t use first and mash the pedal! You lose all grip! Put it in second and ease on the gas. Sudden movements make you slip!” He didn’t listen. He just put the Volvo back in the garage and we took our Suburban in 4Lo. Which reminds me: One summer in Maine, while at a town dock at the end of a winding dirt road, a woman was stuck from parking on the side of the road in her Suburban. Her tires kept sliding and digging themselves deeper. Assuming that she had already put it in 4lo, I told her to try using the brakes to balance power and try using a floor mat for extra traction. Someone else came up and pressed the 4lo button and drove it right out of the ditch like it was nothing. The woman had no idea that her Suburban had 4 wheel drive despite the large, clearly marked buttons on the dash board by the steering wheel. FAIL to know your own car.

thats what it’d be like if it ever snowed heavily in east texas

  101. Kat says:

This one needs to be titled (for the first car, anyway):
“Gunning your engine when your car is already out of control FAIL”

  102. keiko says:

I hate to laugh at this since I know it’s totally scary and some serious damage was done, but man… I’ve never seen cars slide around like that before… it never snows where I live.

  103. Chilled out maniac says:

I want to kick every person whos driving a car in that video in the face!

  104. Jorma Teräs says:

There is snow in the ground half of the year where i live and i havent ever seen driving like that… But maybe something like that will happen if you are not used to it… (snow i mean…) Hillarious anyway :D

  105. jfarmy says:

Wow, I guess living in canada, you stop on a dime with zero friction!

  106. bugwitch says:

I’m suprised this took so long to be posted. This is from a Seattle storm two or three years ago. Yes, quite funny, and I really hope that person had insurance.

Either way it is a Fail that is quite fun.

  111. Billy says:

These guys are idiots! Why didn’t they learn from the first guy who just span around like a twat? Once the guy stopped I would grab him out of the car.

  112. Lucas says:

This would never happen in Vancouver, it only rains here, everyday, forever.

  113. Nijjuy says:

If you thought people who are regularly exposed to these driving conditions are better at this, you are wrong. Similar stuff going on in Russia:

  114. Green Is Good says:

Holy Crap, is that person drunk??

  115. gem says:

oh come on.. we call those road conditions Tuesday where I’m from.

  116. Jackorb says:

How is that possible? Are those people using studded snowtires? Don’t think so.. Here in Finland we have to drive in those kind of conditions (and even worse) about 5 months during winter and I’ve never seen any one speeding after hitting something. Why they speed up? Shouldn’t they be braking? Looks pretty stupid.. After getting our driverlicenses we have to pass a driving test which is done on a slippery track (polished stone and water or some other lubricating method). We drive with different speeds up to 50mph to a turn and then try to control the car. One must pass this test to get a permanent driving license.

    • david says:

it’s already been pointed out several times, but in this region of the US, it might snow once or twice in a year.

  117. Jules says:

Why don’t they have chains on their tires??? Your not in the far est of Russia anymore… Won’t happen in France ^^

I hope it was bad drivers… If no one tells you to drive really slow and with chains, then the driving licence is “learn how to read signs”… Bad point.

  118. Madd says:

The woman with three kids in the car driving down an icy road is an idiot.

    Parenting fail.

  119. joederbes says:

This is precisely why we shut down the city and stay inside whenever there is even the chance of show here in Atlanta.

  124. RYAN says:

HAHAHA i never thought this would get here. I live in portland and this is right next to the Multnomah athletic club. AND THAT’S MY NEIGHBOR

  125. Samantha says:

It appears in the first 7 seconds of this video that there is gunfire traded between the two cars … Does no one else see this?

    • James says:

no there isn’t any gunfire, people would be running more. It is just the car hitting the first cars.

      • Samantha says:

That’s what I thought initially (someone else pointed it out to me). If you watch, the first car hits the second and spins off and there’s a bunch of sparks. But then, there’s some sort of flash of light in the passenger-side windshield and out the passenger-side window, and a sound when the light goes off. It happens right before the car disappears for a split second underneath the railing.

I’ve been watching it again and again and I still see it.

I mean, that would make more sense as to why that guy is driving like a freaking maniac down an icy road.

  126. artstsym says:

The hilarious part of all this is that a literal hit and run would be much more effective.

  127. Jess & Vaughan says:

All you need now is someone to sweep all the crap out of the way in front of the cars and it’d be curling.

    Only cooler.

  128. Stefan says:

    i couldn’t stop laughing! :D

  136. Shana says:

Oh man, I really hope that no one was hurt! They shouldn’t have been driving to begin with!

  137. buckwheat31189 says:

This is most likely in Seattle (KING 5 is one of their news stations)…nobody knows how to drive in the snow over here. Even if we just get an inch of snow, everyone panics and the city pretty much just shuts down. Talk about failure =P

  138. Ryo says:

    Hahaaaaa….retards.

  139. CanDriveInSnowCorrectly says:

I’ve never had this issue before, and I live in New England where we get f*cking 30 feet of snow a year. All these people should just stay the hell of the roads. DON’T BREAK IN THE SNOW. DON’T BREAK ON A FU*KING HILL IN THE SNOW. GET THE HELL OF THE GODDAMN ROADS IF YOU DON’T KNOW HOW TO GODDAMN DRIVE.

People like that deserve to be in accidents. At least there will be less drivers with shitty driving ability out there.

  140. MentalFloss says:

This must have taken place somewhere where snow rarely happens….otherwise there’s just no excuse.

    …..Except “Fun”.

  141. zoe says:

    CAR CURLING!!!

  142. TrueGryphon says:

For anyone wondering, King 5 is a Seattle news station (just Google it!). I remember watching this live a few years ago. I think it was on Queen Ann Hill, but Seattle has MANY hills down by the water. Trust me, the snow turns to ice here after one car has driven on the roads.. We generally shut everything down just because of 1 inch, lol.

    • Funkybman says:

Actually, this happened in Portland (it was rebroadcast in Seattle), but you are correct, it was a couple years ago. January 16th, 2007, to be exact. And it was at the corner of SW Salmon and 20th. Check the google map at street view and compare to the video if you don’t believe me.

  151. pixie says:

  152. Julz says:

  153. Queen of Sleaze says:

You gotta love snow driving in Seattle… That shit happens every damn time the ground is white. You’d think people would know better than to be tryin to drinve when it’s like that by now!

  154. Jocke says:

Stupid Americans, do never lock the brakes whem it’s slippery. And if you tell me that it would not make any differens. You are an idiot and should never drive a car again!

  155. JonnoJ says:

Woo… bumper cars… this happens every time it snows here. people are stupid drivers… you just have to drive slower and brake earlier.

  156. asdfg says:

I lol’d at the women… EEH HAEV FREE KIDS and at the end eehehehehe
