If you’re in a country for an extended period, I agree–learn the basics. But to say that English was the most-spoken language and should stay that way is naive. The language of a culture always changes, it is constantly morphing. The English language especially! Latin, anyone?

Ya in Mexico almost everybody knows at least more than 1 language, but the ones that goes illegally to united states are the ignorant that think they can have a life without studying.
For example I´m in Mexico and I´m Mexican and I know,read and speak 4 languages; I´m still in school and I also learned the basics for mandarin but I forgot them xD

Well that was funny.

I just wanted to add something. When people (tourists) coming from the USA (I would never call them ‘Americans’, that would include Canadians or Argentinians, eugh) go to… say… France, they always expect the locals to speak English. Do they know France is NOT in the UK? Sometimes I think they don’t.

So please, Étasuniens (US nationals in French), don’t give Mexicans lessons about respecting your country if most of you can’t do the same when you visit a non-English speaking country, that’d be FAILbulous.

All i have to say is not everyone that looks mexican is mexican. I am colombian and trinidadian, and i have to hear this shit all day; moreover, i only speak english lol. Also i have known a dutch person, a german/japanese person, a white/japanese, a filipino/white person, and filipinos themselves to get confused with mexicans. Furthermore to the mexicans, stop assuming every mexican looking person speaks spanish, and do not get mad when they can not understand you. Its really annoying shit

You are totally right. Everyone should learn the primary language of that country. This country is too soft on that issue. I am Russian born…but have lived here long enough to learn the language….and so did my family. Its one thing to have tv channels you pay extra that are in your language but its another when yuo go to public places and you see billboards in another language or people working in public places who dont speak the country’s language
